English 5 2 P osition the Scanner Place the scanner on a flat, st able surface, f ree of vibration. Lea ve at least 2 inches (50 mm) of space aroun d all sides and the top of the scanner for adequate ventilation, and leav e room at the back to reach the po wer switch on the rear panel.
English 6 4 Connect the Sc anner to the Computer The SprintS can 45i r equires a SCSI host adap ter in your com- puter . If your computer do es not ha ve an adapter , you must install one (see page 1 7).
English 7 Note: The address is preset to 4. Do not ch ange it unless another de vice is using 4. Other ad dresses typi cally available are 2, 5, and 6 . Connect the SCSI cab les Place the scanner at the end of the SCSI chain or between the computer and other SCSI de vices as sho wn in the follo wing diagrams.
English 8 Y ou may need additional cables or adapter s to connect the scan- ner . Y our cable must ha ve a 50-pin C entroni cs M or DB -25 M connector at o ne end for attachment to the s canner , and the cable should be as short as possible.
English 9 5 Connect the Sc anner to A C P o wer and T urn On 1 Connect the p ower co rd as sho wn. 2 T urn on the scanner b y pressing the po wer switch. 3 Check the lights. Th e green light indicates po wer on. The yellow light blinks while the scanner initiali zes, remaining steady when the scanner is ready .
English 10 6 Loading the Film Carri ers The Four -Slide Film Carrier 1 W ith the text facing up and the hinge at the top, open the carrier flat as sho wn. 2 Place up to four mounted 35mm slides in th e spaces pro- vided. Be sure the slide mounts f i t properly in the r ecessed areas.
English 11 2 Open the carrier flat. Insert a 4x5 chrom e or ne gativ e so that the left edge is against the positioning pins . Position the film so the image is right-readi ng and right-side up (emulsion- side down). Note: The emulsion side is the du ll side.
English 12 4 Secure the film with the two magnets pro vided, on the top and bottom edges. Be sure the magne ts are also within the raised ridges . 5 Place the adapter in the 4x5 car rier , sliding the notches into the pins on the left edge. The f ilm and magnets should be face up, as sho wn.
English 13 4 If the film is unmounted or the mount is thin, use the slide spacer pro vided. Position the slide space r underneath the slide. The f ilm should fit snugly into the adapter . (The spacer also ensures that the image will be at the co rrect distance from the sc anning mechanism.
English 14 7 Inserti ng the Carrier into the Scanner 1 Open the carrier acces s door . 2 Insert the carr ier gently and f irmly into the carrier slot as shown, until you feel it stop. 3 Close the carrier access d oor . The scann er will not scan if the door is open.
English 15 8 Previe w -Scan an Image 1 Load the f ilm or slide in to the film car rier (as described previously). 2 Insert the carrier into the scanner (as described pre viously). 3 Start the PolaCo lor Insight program: 4 Select the type of slide or ne gati ve yo u are scanning from the Input lis t on the P rev ie w panel.

English 17 Installing a SCSI Hos t Adapter The SprintScan 45i co nnects to a SCSI ho st adapter in you r com- puter . Most Macintosh computers have a SCSI adapter b uilt in, bu t most IBM PC com patible computers d o not. If you mu st install a SCSI adapter , turn the computer of f and fol- lo w instructions pr ovided b y the adapter manufacturer .
