14 C2601M-C (3/07) Overview of the Sy stem The DX4000 serves as the c enter of a video surveillance system to whi ch many computers can be connected. Figure 4 ill ustrates t hat computers can be connected e ither directly to the DX4000 or remotely ove r a network.
C2601M-C (3/07) 15 Operation Refer to the DX4000 Operat ion manual for details on how to access the syst em features and navi gate the menus. The operation man ual is located on the reso urce CD that came with your unit. STARTING AND STOPPING THE DX4000 Press the p ower button o n the front panel of the D X4000 to s tart it.
16 C2601M-C (3/07) Configuring the Sy stem Before you use the DX4 000 to record and monitor vide o, you should conf igure the system settings dis cussed below . DATE AND T IME The Date/Time menu contains th e following o ptions for controlling date and time on the DX400 0: • Date: Choose this option to set th e date on the DX4000.

C2601M-C (3/07) 19 ENTERING AN IP ADDRESS If you use DH CP to derive IP addresses , you do not need to set up an IP addr ess for th e DX4000. Follo w these step s to set up th e IP address for the DX4000 if DHCP has bee n turned off : 1. Select the Syst em menu from the main menu of the DX4000 , and then select Network.
20 C2601M-C (3/07) Upgrading or Changing Firmware on the DX4000 Firmware resides in the flas h memory of the main board o f the DX4000. T o upgrade t he firmware you must run an upgrade prog ram f rom a computer that is conne cted to the unit through a netw ork.
C2601M-C (3/07) 21 4. From a remote compu ter that is conne cted to the D X4000 throug h a network conn ection, locat e the upgrade f iles. These fil es ca n be loca ted on the resour ce CD or on a network dri ve. The names of these fi les might be d ifferent for each up grade.

C2601M-C (3/07) 23 UPGRADING THROUGH A DIRECT CONNECTION Follow these i nstructions if you are con nected to th e DX4000 fro m a remote comp uter with a cr ossover cable . This comput er also must have access to up grade fil es either on a network dri ve or a CD.

C2601M-C (3/07) 25 V ERIFYING NETWORK CONNECTIONS Since upgradin g the firmware on th e DX4000 from a compute r connected by a crossover cable does not rely on DHCP to assign the I P addres s on the DX4000, make sure that your comp uter is in the same subnet range as the DX40 00.

28 C2601M-C (3/07) Installing and Updating the Remote Agent Application The DX4000 remote ag ent application is designed to run on a comp uter that uses a Microsoft ® Windows ® op erating system. Refer to Specifications on page 36 for a list of su pported versions of the Windows operating systems.

Double-click the file to start it. For ex ample, in t he examples abov e, you would d ouble-click t he file called DX4000RemoteAge nt.
