These units can automatically f orward LAN broadcasts , multicasts, and frames across a 2-wire v oice-grade twisted-pair link. The data is passed transparently (unmodified) through the 2172Rs or 2172s.
Figure 2. Model 2172R standalone rear panel 3.1 CONNECTING THE TWISTED-PAIR LINE INTERFACE The Model 2172R suppor ts communication between two peer Ethernet LAN sites ov er a distance of up to 6,000 ft (1.8 km) over 24 A WG (0.5 mm) twisted-pair wire.
1. T o function properly , the two Model 2172Rs m ust be connected together using twisted-pair , unconditioned, dr y , metal wire, between 19 (0.9mm) and 26 A WG (0.4mm). Leased circuits that run through signal equalization equipment are not acceptable .
3.2 CONNECTING THE 10/100BASE-T ETHERNET INTERFACE The shielded RJ-45 por t labeled Ethernet is the A uto-MDIX10/100Base- T interf ace. This por t is designed to connect directly to a 10/100Base-T network. Figure 5 shows the signal/pin relationships on this interf ace.
4.0 CONFIGURATION The Model 2172R has eight DIP s witches f or configuring the unit for a wide variety of applications. This section descr ibes switch locations and e xplains the diff erent configurations.
Figure 7. DIP switch orientation 4.2 CONFIGURING DIP SWITCH S2 DIP s witch S2 is where you configure the CopperLINK line r ate, symmet- ric or asymmetr ic, Ethernet, and Ether net Shutdown. T able 1 summa- rizes def ault positions of DIP s witches S2-1 through S2-8.
Switch S2-1: Symmetric/Asymmetric Operation Use s witch S2-1 to configure the unit f or symmetric or asymmetric opera- tion.. Switches S2-2 and S2-3: Data Rate Use s witches S2-1, S2-2 and S2-3 to configure the CopperLINK line rates.
Switch S2-7: Ethernet Shutdown Use s witch S2-7 to enable or disab le Ether net Shutdown. When Ether net Shutdown is enab led, the 2172R will disable the Ether net interf ace when there is no CopperLINK link detected. When Ether net Shutdown is dis- abled, the Ethernet interface will alw ays be enab led.
5.2 FRONT PANEL LED STATUS MONITORS The Model 2172R f eatures three front panel LEDs that monitor power , the Ethernet signals, and the CopperLINK connection. Figure 8 shows the front panel location of each LED . T able 8 on page 16 describes the LED functions.
