7 1.3 Y our wireless rout er 1 LAN LED Off : No power or no physical connection. On : Has physical connection to a local area network (LAN). 2 W AN (Internet) LED Off : No power or no physical connection. On : Has physical connection to a wide area network ( W AN).

9 1.4 P ositioning your router F or the best wireless signal tr ansmission between the wireless router and the network devices c onnected to it, ensure that you: • Place the wireless r outer in a centraliz ed area for a maximum wireless co verage for the netw ork devices.
10 1.5 Setup Requirements T o set up your wireless network, you need a comput er that meets the following sy stem requir ements: • Ethernet RJ-45 (LAN) port (10Base - T/100Base - T X) • IEEE 802.
11 1.6 Router Setup IMPORT ANT! • Use a wired connection when setting up your wir eless router to avoid possible setup pr oblems. • Before setting up y our ASUS wireless router , do the following: • If you are replacing an e xisting router , disconnect it from your network.
12 2. Using the bundled network cable, c onnec t your comput er to your wireless r outer ’ s LAN por t. IMPORT ANT! Ensure that the LAN LED is blinking. 3 Using another network cable, c onnec t your modem to y our wireless rout er ’ s W AN por t. 4.
13 3. Inser t your modem ’ s AC adapter t o the DC-IN por t and plug it to a pow er outlet. 4. Install an IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n/ac WLAN adapter on your computer . NO TES: • F or details on connecting to a wireless network, refer to the WLAN adapter ’ s user manual.
14 2 Getting star t ed 2.1 Logging int o the W eb GUI Y our ASUS Wireless Router comes with an in tuitive web gr aphical user interface (GUI) that allows y ou to easily congure its various featur es through a web br owser such as Internet Explorer , Fir efo x, Safari, or Google Chrome.
15 2.2 Quick Internet Setup ( QIS) with Aut o - detection The Quick Internet Setup (QIS) function guides you in quickly setting up your Internet connection. NO TE: When setting the Internet connection for the rst time, pr ess the Reset button on your wireless r outer to reset it t o its factor y default settings.
16 2. The wireless r outer automatically detects if your ISP c onnec tion type is Dynamic IP , PPPoE , PPTP , L2TP , and Static IP . Key in the necessary information for your ISP c onnection t ype. IMPORT ANT ! Obtain the necessary information from your ISP about the Internet connection type.
17 for Static IP NO TES : • The auto-detec tion of your ISP connection type takes place when you congur e the wireless router f or the rst time or when your wireless rout er is reset to its default settings.

19 2.3 C onnec ting to y our wireless networ k After setting up your wir eless router via QIS, you can c onnect your computer or other smart devices to your wireless netw ork . T o connect to y our network: 1. On your comput er , click the network icon in the notication area to displa y the available wireless networks .
20 3 C onguring the General settings 3.1 Using the N etwork Map Network Map allows you to c ongure your network’ s securit y settings, manage y our network clients, and monitor your USB device.
21 3.1.1 S etting up the wireless security settings T o protect your wireless network from unauthorized access , you need to configure its security settings. T o set up the wireless security settings: 1. F rom the navigation panel , go to General > Netw ork Map .
22 4. F rom the Security Lev el dropdown list, select the encr yption method for y our wireless network. IMPORT ANT! The IEEE 802.11n/ac standard pr ohibits using High Throughput with WEP or WP A- TKIP as the unicast cipher . If you use these encr yption methods, your da ta rate will drop t o IEEE 802.
23 3.1.3 Monitoring your USB device The ASUS Wireless Router provides a USB port for connecting USB devices or USB printer to allo w you to share files and print er with clients in your network.
24 IMPORT ANT! Y ou rst need to create a shar e account and its permission /access rights to allow other network clients t o access the USB device via an FTP site/third-party FTP client utility , Ser vers Center , Samba, or AiCloud. F or more details, ref er to the section 3.
25 Safely removing the USB disk IMPORT ANT : Incorrect removal of the USB disk may cause data corruption. T o safely r emove the USB disk: 1. F rom the navigation panel , go to General > Netw ork Map . 2. In the upper right corner , click > Eject USB disk .
26 3.2 Crea ting a Guest Network The Guest Network pro vides temporar y visitors with Internet connectivity via access to separate SSIDs or networks without providing ac cess to your privat e network . NO TE: R T -AC51U supports up to six SSIDs (three 2.
27 4. T o congure additional options , click Modify . 5. Click Y es on the Enable Guest Network scr een. 6. Assign a wir eless name for your tempor ar y network on the Network Name (SSID ) eld. 7. Selec t an Authen tication Method . 8. Select an Encr yption method.
28 3.3 Using the T rac Manager 3.3.1 Managing QoS (Q uality of Ser vice) Bandwidth Quality of Ser vice (QoS) allows you t o set the bandwidth priorit y and manage network trac. T o set up bandwidth priority: 1. F rom the navigation panel , go to General > T rac Manager > QoS tab .
29 4. On the user-dened QoS rules page, there are f our default online ser vice types – web sur f , HT TPS and le transfers. Select your preferred service, ll in the Sourc e IP or MA C , Destination P or t , Protocol , T ransferred and P riority , then click Apply .
30 5. On the User-dened Priority page, y ou can prioritize the network applications or devices into v e levels from the user- dened QoS rules ’ dropdown list. Based on priority level, you can use the following methods t o send data packets: • Change the order of upstr eam network packets that are sent to the Internet.
31 3.3.2 Monitoring T rac The trac monitor function allows y ou to access the bandwidth usage and speed of your Internet, wired , and wireless networks. It allows y ou to monitor network trac even on a daily basis . Note: P ackets from the Internet are ev enly transmitted to the wired and wireless devices .
32 3.4 Setting up Par ental C ontrol P arental Con trol allows y ou to contr ol the Internet access time. Users can set the time limit for a clien t ’ s network usage. T o use the parental c ontrol function: 1. F rom the navigation panel , go to General > P arental c ontrol .
33 3.5 Using the USB A pplication The USB Applications function provides A iDisk , Ser vers Cent er , Network Printer Server and Download Master submenus. IMPORT ANT! T o use the ser ver functions, you need to insert a USB storage device , such as a USB hard disk or USB ash drive , in the USB 2.
34 4. Creat e your domain name via the ASUS DDNS ser vices, r ead the T erms of S er vice and then select I will use the ser vice and acc ept the T erms of service and key in your domain name . When done, click Ne x t . Y ou can also select Skip ASUS DDNS settings then click Next to skip the DDNS setting.
35 3.5.2 Using Ser vers C enter Ser vers Cent er allows you t o share the media les from the USB disk via a Media Ser ver director y , Samba share ser vice, or FTP share service. Y ou can also congure other settings f or the USB disk in the Ser vers Cent er .
36 T o launch the Media Ser ver setting page, go to General > USB application > Ser vers C enter > Media Ser vers tab . Refer to the following f or the descr iptions of the elds: • Enable DLNA Media Ser ver : Select ON/OFF to enable/ disable the DLNA Media Ser ver .
37 T o delete an existing ac count: a) Select the account that y ou want to delete . b) Click . c) When prompt ed, click Delete to c onrm the account deletion. T o add a folder: a) Click . b) Enter the folder name , and click Add . The folder that y ou created will be added t o the folder list.

F rom the list of folders , select the t ype of access permission that you wan t to assign for specic f olders: • R/W : Selec t this option to assign r ead/write access. • R: Select this option to assign read-only access. • No : Select this option if you do not want to shar e a specic le folder .
39 T o use FTP Share service: NO TES: Ensure that you ha ve set up your FTP server through AiDisk. For mor e details, ref er to the section 3.5.1 Using AiDisk . 1. F rom the navigation panel , click General > USB application > Ser vers C enter > FTP Share tab .
40 2. Congur e the following settings: • Maximum Login User Set the maximum number of concurrent connections of the Network Neighborhood or FTP Ser ver . NO TE: Some FTP clients may establish more than one connection. Setting this number too low will lead to login failur es.
41 • W ork Group Assigns the name of the local RT -AC51U netw ork as seen in Network Neighborhood. NO TE: F or Device Name and W ork Group , the standard input characters include letters (a-z, A-Z), digits (0-9), space , underscores(_), and hyphens(-).
42 T o set up 3G/4G internet ac cess: 1. F rom the navigation panel , click General > USB application > 3G/4G . 2. In the Enable USB Modem eld, select Y es . 3. Set up the following: • Location: Select your 3G/4G service provider ’ s location from the dropdown list.
43 3.6 Using A iCloud AiCloud is a cloud ser vice application that allo ws you to sa ve, sync , share , and access your les . T o use AiCloud: 1. F rom Google Play St ore or Apple Stor e, download and install the ASUS AiCloud app to your smart device.
44 3.6.1 Cloud Disk T o crea te a cloud disk: 1. Inser t a USB storage device into the wir eless router . 2. T urn on Cloud Disk . 3. Go to https://r outer .asus.com and ent er the router login account and passw ord. F or better user experience, w e recommend that y ou use Google Chrome or Fir efo x .
45 4. Y ou can now start accessing Cloud Disk les on devices connected to the network. NO TE: When accessing the devices tha t are connected to the network, you need to ent er the device ’ s user name and password manually , which will not be saved b y AiCloud for security reason.
46 3.6.2 Smar t Acc ess The Smart Access function allows you t o easily access your home network via your rout er ’ s domain name. NO TES: • Y ou can create a domain name f or your router with ASUS DDNS. F or more details, r efer to section 4.3.5 DDNS .
47 3.6.3 Smar t Sync T o use Smart Sync: 1. Launch AiCloud, click Smart Sync > Go . 2. Select ON to enable Smar t Sync. 3. Click Add new ac count . 4. Enter your ASUS WebSt orage account passw ord and select the director y that you wan t to sync with WebSt orage.
48 4 C onguring the A dvanc ed Settings 4.1 W ireless 4.1.1 G eneral The General tab allows y ou to congur e the basic wireless settings. T o configur e the basic wireless settings: 1. F rom the navigation panel , go to Adv anced Settings > W ireless > General tab .
49 4. In the Hide SSID eld, select Y es to prevent wir eless devices from detecting your SSID . When this function is enabled, you would need to ent er the SSID manually on the wireless device to access the wir eless network.
50 • WP A/WP A2 P ersonal/WP A Auto-P ersonal : This option provides str ong security . Y ou can use either WP A (with TKIP) or WP A2 (with AES). If you select this option, you must use TKIP + AES encr yption and enter the WP A passphrase (network key).
51 4.1.2 WPS WPS ( W i-Fi P rotected Setup) is a wireless security standard that allows y ou to easily connect devices to a wireless network. Y ou can congure the WPS function via the PIN code or WPS button. NO TE : Ensure that the devices support WPS.
52 NO TE: WPS suppor ts authentication using Open Syst em, WP A-P ersonal, and WP A2-Personal. WPS does not suppor t a wireless network that uses a Shared Key , WP A-Enterprise, WP A2-Enterprise, and RADIUS encryption method. 3. In the WPS Method eld, select Push Button or Client PIN code.
53 4.1.3 Bridge Bridge or WDS ( Wireless Distribution Sy stem) allows y our ASUS wireless rout er to connect to another wireless acc ess point exclusiv ely , preventing other wireless devic es or stations to access your ASUS wireless r outer .
54 • HY BRID : Enables the W ireless Bridge feature and allo ws other wireless devices/stations t o connect to the router . NO TE: In H ybrid mode, wireless devic es connected to the ASUS wireless router will only r eceive half the connection speed of the Acc ess Point .
55 4.1.4 Wir eless MA C Filter Wir eless MAC lt er provides con trol over packets tr ansmitted to a specied MA C (Media Access C ontrol) address on y our wireless network. T o set up the Wir eless MA C lter: 1. F rom the navigation panel , go to Adv anced Settings > W ireless > W ireless MA C Filter tab .
56 4.1.5 R ADIUS Setting RADIUS (Remote Authentication Dial In User Service) Setting provides an extra lay er of security when you choose WP A- Enterprise, WP A2-Enterprise, or Radius with 802.1x as your Authentication Mode . T o set up wireless RADIUS settings: 1.
57 In the Professional Settings screen, y ou can congure the following: • F requency : Selec t the frequency band that the professional settings will be applied to . • Enable Radio : Selec t Y es to enable wireless networking. Select No to disable wireless networking.
58 • Date t o Enable Radio (weekend) : Y ou can specify which days of the w eekend wireless networking is enabled. • T ime of Day to Enable Radio : Y ou can specify a time range when wireless networking is enabled during the weekend.
59 • W ireless multicast for warding : Select Enable to allow the wireless rout er to forward multicast trac to other wir eless devices that support multicast.
60 T o modify the LAN IP settings: 1. F rom the navigation panel , go to Adv anced Settings > LAN > LAN IP tab. 2. Modify the IP address and Subnet Mask . 3. When done, click A pply . 4.2.2 DHCP S erver Y our wireless r outer uses DHCP to assign IP addresses automatically on your netw ork .
61 3. In the Domain Name text box, enter a domain name f or the wireless rout er . 4. In the IP Pool Starting Address eld , key in the star ting IP address . 5. In the IP Pool Ending A ddress eld, key in the ending IP address . 6. In the Lease Time eld, specify in sec onds when an assigned IP address will expir e.
62 4.2.3 Route If your network makes use of more than one wireless r outer , you can congure a r outing table to share the same Internet service. NO TE : W e recommend that y ou do not change the default route settings unless you hav e advanced knowledge of routing tables.
63 4.2.4 IPT V The wireless r outer suppor ts connection to IPT V ser vices through an ISP or a LAN. The IPT V tab pr ovides the conguration settings needed to set up IPT V , V oIP , multicasting, and UDP for y our ser vice. C ontact your ISP for specic inf ormation regarding y our ser vice.
64 4.3 W AN 4.3.1 Internet Connection The Internet Connection screen allow s you to congur e the settings of various W AN connection t ypes. T o congur e the W AN connec tion settings: 1. F rom the navigation panel , go to Adv anced Settings > W AN > Internet C onnection tab.
65 Enable NA T : NA T (Network Addr ess T ranslation) is a system where one public IP ( W AN IP) is used to provide Internet access to network clients with a priva te IP address in a LAN. The private IP addr ess of each network client is saved in a NA T table and is used to rout e incoming data packets.
66 MA C Address : M AC (Media Ac cess Contr ol) address is a unique identier for y our network ing device. Some ISP s monitor the MA C address of networking devices that connect to their service and reject any unrecogniz ed device that attempt to c onnec t.
67 4.3.2 Port T rigger P or t range triggering opens a predetermined incoming port for a limited period of time whenever a client on the local ar ea network makes an outgoing connection to a specied port.
68 T rigger P or t : Specify a trigger por t to open the incoming port. Prot ocol : Select the protocol, T CP , or UDP . Incoming P or t : Specify an incoming por t to receive inbound data from the Internet. Prot ocol : Select the protocol, T CP , or UDP .
69 4.3.3 Virtual Ser ver/P or t F or warding P or t forwarding is a method to direct network trac from the Internet to a specic por t or a specic range of ports to a device or number of devices on your local network.
70 2. Congur e the following settings below . W hen done, click Apply . Enable P or t F or warding : Choose Y es to enable P or t F or warding . F amous Ser ver List : Determine which type of ser vice you want to acc ess. F amous G ame List : This item lists por ts requir ed for popular online games to work corr ectly.
71 Local IP : Key in the client’ s LAN IP address. NO TE : Use a static IP address f or the local client to make port for warding work properly . Refer to section 4.2 LAN for information. Local P or t : Enter a specic port to receive f or warded packets .
72 4.3.4 DMZ Virtual DMZ exposes one client to the Internet, allowing this client to rec eive all inbound packets directed to y our Local Ar ea Network. Inbound trac from the Internet is usually discarded and r outed to a specic client only if port for warding or a port trigger has been congured on the network.
73 4.3.5 DDNS Setting up DDNS (Dynamic DNS) allows you to acc ess the router from outside your netw ork through the provided ASUS DDNS Ser vice or another DDNS ser vice. T o set up DDNS: 1. F rom the navigation panel , go to Adv anced Settings > W AN > DDNS tab .
74 Enable wildcard : Enable wildcard if y our DDNS ser vice requires one . NO TES : DDNS ser vice will not work under these conditions: • When the wireless r outer is using a private W AN IP address (192.168. x.x, 10.x.x.x, or 172.16.x.x), as indicated by a y ellow text.
75 4.4 IPv6 This wireless r outer suppor ts IPv6 addressing , a system that suppor ts more IP addresses . This standard is not yet widely available . Contact your ISP if your Internet service suppor ts IPv6. T o set up IPv6: 1. F rom the navigation panel , go to Adv anced Settings > IPv6 .
76 4.5 VPN Ser ver VPN ( V ir tual Private Network) pr ovides a secure communica tion to a remot e computer or remote network using a public network such as the Internet. NO TE : Before setting up a VPN connection, you would need the IP address or domain name of the VPN ser ver you are trying to access .
77 4.6 F irew all The wireless r outer can ser ve as a har dware rewall f or your network. NO TE : The Firew all feature is enabled b y default. 4.6.1 G eneral T o set up basic F irewall settings: 1. F rom the navigation panel , go to Adv anced Settings > Fir ewall > General tab .
78 T o set up a URL lter: 1. F rom the navigation panel , go to Adv anced Settings > Fir ewall > URL F ilter tab . 2. On the Enable URL F ilter eld, select Enabled . 3. Enter a URL and click the button. 4. Click Apply . 4.6.3 Keyword lter Keyword lter blocks acc ess to webpages con taining specied keywords.
79 3. Enter a wor d or phrase and click the Add butt on. 4. Click Apply . NO TES: • The Keyword F ilter is based on a DNS quer y . If a net work client has already accessed a w ebsite such as http://www .abcxxx.com, then the website will not be blocked (a DNS cache in the syst em stores previously vi sited websit es).
80 T o set up a Networ k Ser vice lter: 1. F rom the navigation panel , go to Adv anced Settings > Fir ewall > Netw ork Ser vice F ilter tab . 2. On the Enable Network Ser vices F ilter eld, select Y es . 3. Select the Filter table type. Black List blocks the specied network ser vices.
81 4.7 Administr ation 4.7.1 Op eration Mode The Operation Mode page allow s you to select the appropriate mode for y our network . T o set up the opera ting mode: 1. F rom the navigation panel , go to Adv anced Settings > Administr ation > Operation Mode tab .
82 4.7.2 Syst em The S ystem page allow s you to congur e your wireless r outer settings. T o set up the S ystem settings: 1. F rom the navigation panel , go to Adv anced Settings > Administr ation > Sy stem tab.
83 4.7.3 Firm ware Upgrade NO TE : Download the latest rmwar e from the ASUS websit e at http://ww w .asus.com T o upgrade the rm ware: 1. F rom the navigation panel , go to Adv anced Settings > Administr ation > F irmwar e Upgrade tab . 2.
84 4.8 Sy stem Log System L og contains your recor ded network activities. NO TE: System log r esets when the router is reboot ed or powered o . T o view y our system log: 1. F rom the navigation panel , go to Adv anced Settings > Sy stem Log . 2.
85 5 Utilities NO TES: • Install the wireless router's utilities fr om the bundled suppor t CD . • If Autorun is disabled, run setup .ex e from the root dir ector y of the suppor t CD .
86 5.2 F irm ware Restor ation F irmware Restor ation is used on an ASUS Wireless Router that failed during its rmware upg rading process . It uploads the rmwar e that you specify . The process takes about three to f our minutes. IMPORT ANT : Launch the rescue mode on the router bef ore using the F irmware Restor ation utility .
87 3. Set a static IP on your computer and use the f ollowing to set up your T CP/IP settings: IP address : 192.168.1.x Subnet mask : 255.255.255.0 4. F rom your c omputer ’ s desktop, click Start > All Programs > ASUS Utility RT -A C51U W ireless Router > F irmwar e Restora tion .
88 NO TE: The print ser ver function is suppor ted on Windows® XP , Windo ws® Vista, and Windows® 7. T o set up the EZ Prin ter sharing mode: 1. F rom the navigation panel , go to General > USB Application > Network P rinter Server . 2. Click Download No w! to download the network printer utility .
89 4. F ollow the onscreen instructions to set up your har dware , then click Next . 5. W ait a few minutes for the initial setup to nish. Click N ext .
90 8. After the printer ’ s driver installation is complete , net work clients can now use the printer . 7. F ollow the Window s ® OS instructions to install the printer driver .
91 5.3.2 Using LPR to Share P rinter Y ou can share y our printer with computers running on Window s® and MA C operating system using LPR/LPD (Line P rinter Remote/ Line Print er Daemon).

100 Restar t your netw ork in the following sequenc e: 1. T urn o the modem. 2. Unplug the modem. 3. T urn o the router and computers . 4. Plug in the modem. 5. T urn on the modem and then wait for 2 minutes . 6. T urn on the router and then wait f or 2 minutes.
101 • Some cable modem ser vice providers r equire you t o use the MA C address of the computer initially r egistered on the account. Y ou can view the MAC addr ess in the web GUI, Network Map > Clien ts page, and hover the mouse poin ter over y our device in Client Sta tus .
102 6.2 F requently Ask ed Q uestions (F AQs) I cannot access the r outer GUI using a web br ow ser • If your computer is wir ed, check the Ethernet cable connection and LED status as described in the previous section. • Ensure that y ou are using the correct login inf ormation.
103 The client cannot establish a wireless connection with the router . NO TE: I f you are ha ving issues connecting to 5Ghz network , make sure that y our wireless device supports 5Ghz or features dual band capabilities. • Out of Range: • Move the rout er closer to the wireless client.
104 • SSID has been hidden. If your device can nd SSIDs from other routers but cannot nd y our router’ s SSID , go to Advanced Settings > Wir eless > General , select No on Hide SSID , and select Auto on C ontrol Channel .
