1-8 Chapter 1: Pr oduct introduction 1.5.1 Installling the CPU T o install a CPU: 1. Locate the CPU socket on the motherboar d. 1.5 Central Processing Unit (CPU) The motherboard comes with a surface mount L GA775 socket designed for the Intel ® Pen tium ® 4 processor in the 775-land package.

Lift the load plate with your thumb and forenger t o a 100º angle (A), then push the P nP cap from the load plate window t o remove (B). T o prevent damage to the socket pins, do not r emove the PnP cap unless you are installing a CPU .
1-10 Chapter 1: Pr oduct introduction The CPU ts in only one correct orientation. DO NO T force the CPU into the socket to prev ent bending the connectors on the socket and damaging the CPU! 6. Close the load plate (A ), then push the load lever (B) until it snaps into the reten tion tab.
ASUS P5LD2-FM/DH/VP 1-11 1.5.2 Installling the CPU heatsink and fan The Intel ® P entium ® 4 L GA775 processor r equires a specially designed heatsink and fan assembly to ensure optimum thermal condition and per formance.
1-12 Chapter 1: Pr oduct introduction Do not forget to connect the CPU fan connector! Hardwar e monitoring errors can occur if you fail to plug this c onnector . 3. When the fan and heatsink assembly is in place, c onnect the CPU fan cable to the connector on the motherboard labeled CPU_F AN.
ASUS P5LD2-FM/DH/VP 1-13 1.5.3 Uninstalling the CPU heatsink and fan T o uninstall the CPU heatsink and fan: 1. Disconnect the CPU fan cable from the connector on the motherboard. 2. Rotate each fastener counterclockwise. 3. Pull up two fasteners at a time in a diagonal sequence to disengage the heatsink and fan assembly from the motherboard.
1-14 Chapter 1: Pr oduct introduction 4. Remove the heatsink and fan assembly from the motherboard. 5. Rotate each fastener clockwise to reset the orientation. The narrow end of the gr oove should point outward after resetting. (The photo shows the groov e shaded for emphasis.
ASUS P5LD2-FM/DH/VP 1-15 1.6 System memory 1.6.1 Over view The motherboard comes with f our Double Data Rate 2 (DDR2) Dual Inline Memor y Modules (DIMM) sockets. A DDR2 module has the same physical dimensions as a DDR DIMM but has a 240-pin footprint compar ed to the 184-pin DDR DIMM.
