2 Key Combinations NOTE z Do not repeatedly press the keys in quick succession. z Do not use the key combinations togethe r with touch pad (exter nal mouse) or other key oper ations. z Do not use the key com binations be fore you log on to Wind ows. Wait until the hard disk drive indicator turns off.
3 Key Combinations Fn + F5 Fn + F6 Vo l u m e ( Fn + F5 = down / Fn + F6 = up) NOTE z When fine-tuning the sound volume , press and hold Fn , and pres s F5 or F6 intermittently .
4 Key Combinations Y ou can make two settings: • Fn key lock Fn is locked (pressed-down) until you press another key . Use this when pressing difficult key combinations. • Popup menu icon on/off 1 St art up the Hotkey Settings. Click [start] - [All Programs] - [Panasonic] - [Hotkey Settings].
5 Standby or Hibernation Functions The st andby/hibernation functions allow you to shut of f th e computer without closing programs and d ocuments. Y ou can quickly return to th e programs and do cuments that you were working on before st andby or hibernati on.
6 Standby or Hibernation Functions z Do not enter st andby or hibernation in the fo llowing conditions, otherwise the dat a or file may be corrupted, st andby/hi ber- nation may not work, or malfunction may occur in the computer or the periph eral devices.
7 Standby or Hibernation Functions z At the beep *1 , immediately releas e the po wer switch. If you press and hold the power switch for lon ger than four sec- onds, the computer will forcibly shut do.

9 Security Measures Y ou can set a start-up passwo rd to protect your computer from unauthori zed use. 1 Set the p assword ( Î pa g e 8 ), and select [Enable] in [Pass word on boot] in the [Security] menu of the Se tup Utility ( Î pa g e 6 7 ).
10 Security Measures Disable CD/DVD drive operatio n to prevent the drive(s) from being read/written and from being used to st art the computer . Y ou can protect your data from unauthorized access or accidental overwr iting. 1 Select [Disable] in [D VD Operation] in the [Security] menu of the Setup Utility ( Î pa g e 6 7 ).
11 Battery Power *1 In high temperature mode, the 100% battery level is eq uivalent to 80% level of the normal temp erature mode. NOTE z Once the battery is fully charged, the computer performs recharging only when the battery leve l becomes less than approximately 95%, so over charging is avoided.
12 Battery Power Y ou can check the remaining battery charge on th e screen. (Af ter logging on to Windows) 1 Press Fn + F9 . z When the battery pack is in serted (example) : Normal temperatu re mode .
13 Battery Power High temperature mode The high temperatu re mode can prevent the batter y from deterior ating when the comput er is used in high-temp erature envi- ronment or used for a long time with its b attery fully charged. Select [Auto] (default) or [High T emperature] in [Environment] of the [Mai n] menu of the Setup Utility ( Î page 65 ).
14 Battery Power Computer behavior with low battery The default s ettings are as follows. When the battery level becomes 10 % [Low batter y alarm] When the battery level becomes 5 % [Critica l battery a larm] z Displays a message that the battery level is low .
15 Battery Power The “Battery Reca libration” function me asures and memorizes th e battery capacity . T o correct th e battery display , use this function to fill the battery and then disc harge it completely . Perform the procedure at least once immediately after purchasing the comput er .
16 Battery Power The battery pack (CF-VZSU29AU) is a consumable item so the replacement will be necessary . If the ba ttery operation time becomes noticeably short and no t recovered even after recalibra ting the battery , replace with a new ba ttery .
17 Battery Power z To i n s e r t Insert the battery pack until it securely fit s the connector . 4 Slide the cover back. CAUTION z Make sure the latch is se curely locked , otherwise the batter y pack may fall when you carry th e compute r . z Do not remove the battery p ack forcibly when the latch is locked.
18 Multimedia Pocket Y ou can attach the f ollowing device. (refer to r ecent catalogs and other sources for information about the product s available) z DVD MUL TI drive CAUTION z Do not insert/remove the multimedia pocket device in st andby or hibernation, or when the multimedia pocket device indicator or the hard disk drive indicator is on.
19 Multimedia Pocket 3 Carefully insert the device into the multimedia pocket by push- ing both corners until it su rely fit s in the slot. z The computer must be on when inser ting the device. z Insert the device with the label side up. CAUTION z Hold the device on its bo th sides.
20 CD/DVD Drive CD/DVD drive handling care z Do not expose the CD/DVD drive to excessive smoke that may leave a resid ue, e.g., oil smoke, or tobacco smoke. Doing so can shorten the lif e of the drive lens. z We reco mmend cleaning the drive lens with an air puf fer used for camera len ses.
21 CD/DVD Drive Disc handling care z Do not use deformed, warped , or irregularly shaped discs. Reading of disc may not be possible depending on the disc cond itions (cracks, d irt, modifica tion, data re cording quality , copy protection, recording equipment/softwar e that was used to create the disc, etc.

24 CD/DVD Drive Using DVD Media T o play DVD-Vide o or MPEG2 files, you need to use DVD playback software such as WinDVD ( Î page 27 ). Region code setting DVD-Vide o are allocated to region codes according to where they are sold. T o play a DVD-Video, the player ’s sof tware and the drive must have the corr esponding region code.
25 CD/DVD Drive 1 T urn on the computer . 2 Press the eject button (A) and slowly pull out the tray . 3 Insert/Remove the disc. z To i n s e r t Set the disc with the label side up and pr ess the cen ter of the disc until it clicks in place. z To r e m o v e Press on the center spindle (B) and carefully lift up the edg e of the disc.
26 CD/DVD Drive z If a DVD MUL TI drive has alrea dy been set at the time of initial st artup of th e computer , you do not need to inst all the DVD- RAM Driver .
27 WinDVD WinDVD is a software application for DVD playback. For further inform ation, refer to the sof tware’ s online manual. z DVD-Audio cannot be playe d back using WinDVD. 1 Double-click on the desktop. z Alternatively click [start] - [All Programs] - [InterVideo WinDVD] - [InterV ideo WinDVD].
28 WinDVD z Playback may not be possible depe nding on the DVD recorder or th e discs. z Y ou must finalize *1 DV D-R, DVD-R DL, DVD-RW , +R, +R DL, and +RW bef ore playback. Fo r further information, re fer to the instruct ion manual of the DVD re corder .
29 B’s Recorder/B’s CLiP “B’s Recorder” and “B’s CLiP” are CD/DVD recording software applicatio ns developed by B.H.A Corporation. z B’s Recorder: Enables you to create data /music/video CDs and to copy CDs. z B’s CLiP: Enables you to copy or erase files and folders.
30 B’s Recorder/B’s CLiP B’ s Recorder 1 Double-click (B’ s Record er main window) / (lau ncher window) on the desktop. z Alternatively you can click [start] - [All Programs] - [B.H.A] - [B’s Reco rder GOLD8 BASIC] - [B’s Recorder GOLD8] (B ’s Recorder main windo w) / [T askGa te] (launc her window).
31 B’s Recorder/B’s CLiP • If the disc is removed before completely formatted, the ba ckground formatting will restart wh en the disc is returned to the drive. Background formatt ing will continue until the formatting is complete. • T o carry the computer , right-click on the notificat ion area and click [Eject] to remove the disc.

33 PC Card / ExpressCard 2 Open the cover and remove the card. A Press the eje ct button ( F). The eject button po ps out. B Press the eject button (F) again so the card comes out of the slot. C Draw the card stra ight out. NOTE z Check the card’ s specification to prevent the tot al operat ing curr ent from exceeding the allowable limit.
34 SD Memory Card The SD Memory Card slot on this computer on ly accepts SD Memory Ca rds. z This computer does not suppor t SDHC Memory Card (S D Memory Ca rd with the capacity of 4 G B or more).
35 SD Memory Card CAUTION z Do not remove or insert th e SD Memory Card until Windows ha s completed loading. z Do not remove the card or turn off the computer in the following cases, othe rwise the dat a may be corrupted. • While the computer is in stand by or hibernation.

37 SD Security Inserting a specific SD Memory Card can work as an alte rnativ e to entering password in the cases below . Format the card and make the necessar y settings.
38 SD Security 5 Select the trigge r operation (A). [Leave set] Insert and leave the card in the slot. (Y ou can remove the card afterward.) [Set and eject] Insert the card an d eject it. When logging on to Windows or re suming from stand by , hibernation or scr een- saver , eject t he card after the beep sound s to indicate card recognition.
39 SD Security z After making this setting, the following functions will be disabled. • Displaying the Welcome screen • The Fast User Switching fu nction • Remote desktop connection z When you add the check mark for [Do not check the user name], you can register a user name that is different from the Windows user name.
40 SD Security T o disable the setup card If you have lost the setup card, disable the card to avoid unauthorized star tup or logon. When using the card to st art up the computer A S tart the SD Card Setup program. ( Î p age 37 St e p 1 - 3 ) The current settings will be displayed.
41 Smart Card <Only for model with Smart Card slot> Y ou need softwa re to use a Smart Card. CAUTION z Do not: • Hit, bend, or drop the card. • T ouch the contact part with fingers or metal object. • Place the card in very hot location for a long time.
42 RAM Module Use RAM modules that comply with the spec ifications below . Using any other module may cause malfunction or result in computer failure. RAM module specifications: 200 pins, SO-DIMM, 1.8 V , DDR2 SDRAM, PC2-5300 (For information of RAM module comp atibility , contact Panaso nic T echnical Support.
43 RAM Module 4 Insert/Remove the RAM module. z To i n s e r t A T ilt the module slightly a nd insert it in the slot. B Press down the module so that the right and left hooks (B) are lo cked. z To r e m o v e A Carefully open the right and lef t hooks (B).
44 Port Replicator Y ou can use an optional port replicator (CF-VEB521 series). This device frees you from being bothered b y a lot of cable connections when yo u carry the computer . It also all ows you to connect various peri pherals. Connect the port replicator to the exp ansio n bus connector ( A) on the bottom of the com- puter .
45 External Display Y ou can switch the output dest ination to an external display . Connect the external display to the external display port (A). NOTE z After re suming from hibernation or resta rting the computer , the output de stination may not be the same as selected in the previous status.
46 External Display 1 Press Fn + F3 . Each time you press the key combination: Internal LCD Simult aneous display External display A The extended desktop function allo ws you to use the working area across both the internal LCD and the ex ternal displa y .
47 External Display NOTE z It may not be possible to use the extended de sktop with some software application s. z When you click the maximize b utton, the window is displayed on one of t he displays. Y ou cannot mov e the maximized window to the other display .
48 USB Devices Prep aration Before connecting a USB device, first determine the media that cont ains the device’ s driver ( e.g., CD-ROM), then attach the device for that media to the mu ltimedia pocket. Once the inst allation screen for the d evice’s driver appears, equipment you then connect to the mu ltimedia pocket will not be recognized.
49 IEEE 1394 Devices Y ou can connect a digital video camcorder or other IEEE 1394 standard devic e to the computer . T o connect IEEE 1394 devices Prep aration Before connecting an IEEE 1394 device, first determine the media that contains the de vice driver (e.
50 Modem CAUTION z Y ou cannot connect the modem to the following lines. • Interph one • Intercoms •I S D N z Be sure to connect the telephone cable into the modem port, not into the LAN port. z Use a surge protec tor since the modem ma y be damaged by a sudden high vo ltage surge that may occur in the event of a lightning strike.
51 Modem The computer automatically r esumes from sta ndby wh en the telephone connected to the mo dem rings. Y ou will need software to keep the computer in idle state waiting for a phone call, and if you prefer , to turn the computer to standb y again afte rward.
52 LAN CAUTION z Do not connect the telephone ca ble to the LAN port. 1 T urn off the computer . z Do not use standby or hibernation. 2 Open the cover (A) and connect the cable. Connect the LAN port (B) and the network syst em (server , HUB, etc.) using a LAN cable.
53 LAN Enabling the Power On by LAN function The computer automatically tur ns from off to on when the comput er is accessed from the network server via the intern al LAN port. 1 Select [Allow] in [Power On by LA N] in the [Advanced] menu of the Setup Utility ( Î pa g e 6 6 ).
54 LAN Enabling/Disabling the Wake Up from LAN function When the W ake Up from LAN function is enabled, the computer automatically resumes fr om sta ndby or hibernation when the computer is accessed from the network serv er via the internal LAN port.
55 Disabling/Enabling Wireless Communication <Only for model with wireless LAN, Blueto oth and/or wireless W AN> There are three ways of disabling and enabling wireless communication.
56 Disabling/Enabling Wireless Communication This utility allows you to contro l the function of the wireless switch. This utility also allows you to enable or disable wirel ess devices from a pop-up menu in the notifica tion area. In the default setting, all wir eless d evices are enab led.
57 Wireless LAN <Only for model with w ireless LAN> CAUTION z Do not use wireless LAN on airplanes, in hospitals, or in other locations wher e wireless LAN signals may affect periphera l devices. Follow the instru ctions of airline companies and hospitals.
