Optical tube This is the main optical component of the telescope. The glass lens at the front of the tube gathers incoming light and focuses it by bending (or refracting) the light ra ys. The tube assembly has se veral parts built into it, which are shown and discussed in detail in the ne xt section.

8 Objective lens: This is the main optical component of the telescope. It is an achromatic, fully coated 60mm lens . 9 Glare/Dew shield: This is a simple “hood” for the objective lens that prev ents dew from f or ming and stra y light from hitting the lens.
19 Altitude lock knob: This locks the telescope in the altitude (up/down) direc - tion. Keep this knob tightened unless you are moving the telescope a significant distance in the altitude direc- tion. For smaller altitude adjustments, use the altitude micro-motion control rod and thumbwheel.
4. Assembly Assembling the telescope f or the first time should take about 30 minutes. The only tools you will need are a Phillips head screwdriv er and a flat head screwdriv er . As a general note, tighten all screws securely to eliminate fle xing and wobbling, but be careful not to ov er-tighten and thereb y strip the threads.
Altitude and Azimuth (Aiming the T elescope) The Obser v er 60 altazim uth mount per mits motion along two ax es: altitude (up/down) and azimuth (left/right). See Figure 5. Moving the telescope up/down and r ight/left is the “natural” wa y people aim objects and this makes pointing the telescope intui - tive and easy .
Operating the EZ Finder II reflex finder The EZ Finde r II refl ex find er (Fi gure 6) works by proje cting a tin y red dot onto a lens mounte d in the fron t of the unit . When y ou l oo k th ro ugh the EZ Fin der II , th e r ed d ot w il l ap pea r t o fl oat in space, helping you locate ev en the faintest of deep space ob jec ts .

Eyepiece Selection By using eyepieces of different focal lengths, it is possible to attain many magnifications or powers with the Obser ver 60. Y our telescope comes with two Kellner ey epieces (Figure 9): a 25mm, which gives a magnification of 28x, and a 10mm, which gives a magnification of 70x.
What to Expect So what will you see with your telescope? Y ou should be able to see bands on Jupiter , the r ings of Satur n, craters on the Moon, the waxing and waning of V enus, and many bright deep-sky objects.
