Congratulations on your purchase of an Or ion ® 8" f/4.0 Newtonian Astrograph. It f eatures f ast, high- quality parabolic optics; a machined, dual-speed Cra yf ord f ocuser with linear-tr ack bearing; and e xcellent mechanical construction.
are M6. It is lik ely that only the center hole will be needed to attach the r ings to a dov etail plate f or your mount or for your guide scope assembly . Balancing the 8" f/4.0 Ne wtonian Astrogr aph is achie ved by sliding the dov etail mounting plate (sold separately) f or - ward or backw ard within the mount’ s dov etail saddle.
Using 1.25" and 2" Accessories The 2" f ocuser can accommodate both 1.25" and 2" accesso- ries, including just about any e yepiece or camera. Both the 2" collar and remov able 1.25" adapter feature a brass compres- sion r ing to hold your accessories in place without marring their metal barrels.
is centered on the crosshairs of the finder scope and in the telescope’ s e yepiece, the finder scope is aligned and ready to be used f or locating objects. The finder scope alignment should be chec ked bef ore ev er y imaging or observing session.
Imaging with the 8" f/4.0 Newtonian Astrograph This instr ument has f ast f/4.0 parabolic optics, which pro - duce br ight images and allow fairly shor t e xposure times. F ast optics also inherently produce some coma, or distor - tion of star images toward the peripher y of the field of view .
is a relatively easy process and can be done in da ylight or darkness. T o check collimation, remo ve the e yepiece and look do wn the f ocuser drawtube .
NO TE: The center ring sticker need not ever be remo ved from the primary mirror . Because it lies directly in the shadow of the secondary mirror , its presence in no way adver sely affects the optical performance of the tele - scope or the image quality .
By “ra dia l p osi tio n” w e me an the po sit ion of the se con dar y mirror along the axis per pendicular to the f ocuser drawtube, as shown in Figure 13 .
The view through the collimation cap should now resemble Figure 9e . A simple star test will indicate how well the tele - scope optics are collimated. Star-T esting the T elescope When it is dar k, point the telescope at a bright star and accu- rately center it in the eyepiece’ s field of view .
the Phillips-head screw is unthreaded, the secondar y mirror and its holder can be remov ed from the telescope. The sec - ondar y mirror does not need to be remov ed from its holder for cleaning. Then follow the same procedure described below f or cleaning the pr imar y mirror .
