5 PREP AR A TION INST AL LING BA TTERIES You need two AA batter i es t o power the SCP-88. For the bes t perfor m ance a nd longes t li f e , we rec om- mend alka line batt eries, s uch as RadioShac k Cat. No. 23- 552. Fol low these steps to ins tall b at ter ies.

7 CONNECTING HEADPHON ES Connect the s upplie d stereo headphones to the SCP-88’s PHONE jac k for ster eo sound. Then put on the he adphones a nd adjust the he adband for a snug fit . Listening Safely To protec t your hear ing, fo llow these gui delin es when you use headpho nes.
8 • Do not li sten at ext remely high vol ume level s. Extended high-vol ume listen ing can le ad to pe r - manent h earing loss. • Once y ou set the volume, do not increase it. Over ti me, your ears adapt to th e volume level , so a vol ume level t hat doe s not cause d iscomfo rt might still dama ge your he aring.
9 CONNECTING OPTIONAL SPEAKERS Inste ad of headp hones, you can connect ampli fied speaker s with a 1 / 8 - inch mini plug t o the PHO NE jac k. Your l ocal Rad ioShack store sells a wide var iety o f amplif i ed speakers . USING THE BEL T CLIP The belt clip lets you k eep your hand s f ree whil e you listen t o the SCP-8 8.

11 CASSE TTE OPERA TI ON PLA YING A CASSETTE T APE 1. Connect the SCP-88 to a pair of headph ones or an ampli fied speak er system (see “ Connecting Headphones” on Pag e 7 or “Connec ting Optiona l Speakers” on Page 9) . 2. T ake up any sl ack in the t ape by turning the cas - sette ’s hub wit h a pencil.

17 USING F AST-FORW ARD AND REWIND To fast -forward t he tape, pr ess or (whi chever is th e same dir ection as the DIRECTION swi t c h). To rewind the tape, press or ( whiche ver i s the opposit e direction of the DIRECTION swi tch). When the tape rea ches the end, you must pre ss STOP to releas e or .
18 T AP E TIPS T ape Qualit y For the b est perfor mance, use onl y regular length (60- o r 90-minut e) casset te tapes. We do not recom- mend long -play ing cas sette t apes, such as C-1 20s, because they a re extre m e l y thin and c an easily tan- gle i n the play back mech anism.
19 Caution: Be ca r eful not to damag e the cassette when tappi ng it. Do not touch th e exposed tape or al - low any shar p obje cts near t he cass ette. Cleaning t he T ape-Handling P a rts Dirt , dust, or particl es of the ta pe’s coati ng can acc u- mulate on the tap e head and other par ts that t h e t ape touches .
20 4. Use a cotto n swab dipped in de natured alc ohol or tape head clea ning solu t ion to clean the play- back head, pin ch r o l ler s, c apstans and tap e guides. 5. When you fi nish cl eaning, pr ess STOP and clos e the co m partm ent, th en reinst all t he bat teries.
