5 PREP A RAT ION CONNECTING TO PO WER You can power your SCP-86 fr om: • Internal b atteries • A C po wer (usi ng an A C adapter ) • Y our v ehicle’ s c igarett e-li ghter soc ket (usi ng a DC adapt er) Using Battery P ower To power the SCP-86 f rom internal bat teries, you need two AA batte ries.

9 Using V ehic le Battery P ower To power the SCP- 86 from your v ehicle’s battery , you need a DC adapter , such as Cat. No. 270- 1560. Cautions : • Y ou must us e a DC adapter t hat suppli es 3 vo lts DC powe r and d eliv ers at least 20 0 mill i amps.
10 Foll ow these steps t o power the SCP- 86 f r om your vehi cle’s ba ttery . 1. Set the adapte r’ s volt age s wit ch to 3V . 2. Insert the adapter ’ s 3.4 mm outer diam et e r/1.3 mm in ner diameter barrel plug into th e adapter ’ s cor d , wi th th e ti p s et t o n ega t ive.

15 3. Set the tape select s wit ch to NORM f or normal bias cas sette tapes or to CrO 2 /MET AL fo r chrom e or metal ca ssette tapes . 4. Slide DOLBY NR upwar ds if y ou are pl a ying a casset te tape that was r ecorded with Dol by B noise redu ction (s ee “Dolb y Noise Reducti on” on P age 18).

17 USING FAST FORWARD AND REWIND When the tape is st opped, press or to re- wind or fa st-forwar d i t. To stop t he t ap e befo re it reaches the end, p ress ST OP . Note: To protect t he tape after th e tape has fully wound to ei ther end, press ST OP t o release t he or button.
18 CHANGING THE T APE DIRECTION You can cha nge the tap e’s direct ion using t he FW D/ REV swi t ch. To lis ten to the tap e’s forwar d side (fac- ing out ), set the swit ch to FWD . To li st en to th e ta pe’ s rever se side (faci ng in), set the swi tch to REV .
19 TA P E T I P S The foll owing tips can help you get the best perfor- mance and the lon gest life from you r SCP-86. Note: For the bes t performanc e, use onl y r eg ular lengt h (60- or 90-minute ) casset te tapes. Lon g- playi ng casse tte tapes, such a s C-120s, are not recomm ended becaus e they are ext remely t hin and can tangl e easily.
20 CLEANING THE T A PE-HANDLING PA R T S Dirt , dust, or par ticles of the tap e’s coa ting can ac cu- mulat e o n the tape heads and other par ts the tape touch es. Thi s can great ly r educe th e performanc e of the SCP- 86. You should clean the tape-ha ndling part s after about eve ry 20 hours of tape pla yer oper- ati on.
