12 First Steps First Steps Charging the Batt er y The camera uses a Rechargeable Li -ion Battery EN-EL10 (supplied). Charge the battery with the Battery Char ge r MH-63 (supplied) before first use or when the battery is running low. 1 Connect the power cable.

22 Basic Photography and Playback: Auto Mode Step 2 F rame a Picture 1 Ready the camera. Hold the camera steadily in both hands, keeping your fingers and other objects away from the lens, flash and self-timer l amp. When taking pictures in “tall” orientation, turn the cam era clockwise so t hat the built-in fl ash is above the lens.
23 Step 2 Frame a Picture Basic Photography and Playback: Auto Mode Using the Zoom Use the zoom buttons to activate optical zoom. Press f ( h ) to zoom out, increasing the area visible in the frame, or g ( i ) to zoom in so that the subject fills a larger area o f the frame.
24 Basic Photography and Playback: Auto Mode Step 3 F ocus and Shoot 1 Press the shutter-release button halfway. When a face looking toward the camer a is recognized: Camera will focus on t he face surrounded by a double border. • Once focus has been locked th e double border will glow green.

28 Basic Photography and Playback: Auto Mode Using the F lash The flash has a range of about 0.3-4.8 m (1-15 ft. 8.9 in.) when the camera is zoomed out all the way. With maximum op ti cal zoom applied, the range is about 0.3-2.4 m (1-7 ft. 10.5 in.) (when [ISO sensitivity] is set to [Auto]).
29 Using the Flash Basic Photography and Playback: Auto Mode B Shooting When Lightin g Is Poor and the Flash Is Dis abled ( B ) • Use of a tripod is recommended to stabilize the camera during shootin g and avoid the effects of camera shake. 30 Basic Photography and Playback: Auto Mode T aking Pic tures with the Self- timer The camera is equipped with a ten-seco nd and three-second timer for self- portraits. When using the self-timer, use of a tripod is recommen ded. Turn vibration reduction ( A 109) [Off] when using a tripod.
31 Basic Photography and Playback: Auto Mode Macro Mode Macro mode is used for taking pictures of objects as clo se as 6 cm (2.4 in.). Note that the flash may be unable to light enti re subject at distances of less than 30 cm (11.8 in.). 1 Press p (macro mode).
32 Basic Photography and Playback: Auto Mode Exposure C ompensation Exposure compensation is used to alter exposure from the value suggested by the camera to make pictures brighter or darker. 1 Press o (exposure compensation). The exposure compensa tion menu is displayed.
33 High-Sensi tivity Shooti ng Mode High-Sensitivity Shooting Mode Shooting in the High-Sen sitivity Shooting Mode In high-sensitivity shooting mode, sensit ivity i s increased when shooting under low lighting, to reduce blurring caused by camera shake or subject movement, allowing you to capture the atmosphere of the scene.

45 More on Playback T aking a Closer Look: Playback Z oom Pressing g ( i ) during full-frame playback mode ( A 26) zooms the current picture in 3×, with the center of the picture displayed in the monitor (Quick Playback Zoom). The guide at lower right shows which portion of the picture is enlarged.

50 More on Playback V oic e Memos: Recording and Pla yback Use the camera’s built-in mi crophone to record voice memos for pictures marked with n in full-frame playbac k mode ( A 26). Recording Voice Memos A voice memo, up to 20 seconds in length, will be recorded while k is pressed down.
51 More on Playback V iewing Pictures b y Date In calendar mode or list by date mode, p ictures shot on a specified date can be displayed. In full-frame playback mode, ju st as with playb ack mode, picture display can be enlarged, pictures can be edited, voice memos can be recorded or played back, and movies can be played back.

56 Movies The Movie Menu [Movie options], [Auto-focus mode] ( A 58), and [Electronic VR] ( A 58) settings can be changed from the movie menu. Press d in movie mode to display the movie menu and use the rotary multi se lector to modify and apply settings.
57 The Movie Menu Movies C Movie Options and Ma ximum Movie Length and Frames * Movies can be as long as free spa ce in the in ternal memory or on the mem ory card allows. All figures are approxima te. Maximum movie length or frames varies with make of memory card.
58 The Movie Menu Movies Auto-focus Mode Choose how the camera focuses in movie mode. Electronic VR Enable or disable electronic VR for movie recording. At settings other than [Off], the electronic vibrati on reduction icon is displayed in the monitor ( A 6).

60 The Movie Menu Movies Stop-Motion Movies Shoot a number of still pictures, at no specified interval, and join them for recording as a movie. Use to create a movie that simulates claymation. 1 Use the rotary multi selector to choose [Movie options] > [Stop-motion movie] and press k .
61 Movies Movie Playback In full-frame playback mode ( A 26), movies are recognized by the movie mode icons. To play a movie, display it in full-frame playba ck mode and press k . • The movie mode icon varies depending upon a movie option ( A 56) selected in shooting mode.

68 Connecting to Televi sion s, Computers and Printers Connecting to a Computer When the camera is connected to a comp uter using the supplied audio video/USB cable, pict ures recorded wi th the came ra can be copied (transferred) to the computer for storage using the Nikon Transfer software.

The effects of the selected option can be previ ewed in the monitor. At settings other than [Standard color], the icon for the current set ting is displayed in the monitor ( A 6).
