ASUS H81M-C 1-7 1.4 System memory 1.4.1 Overview This motherboard comes with two Double Data Rate 3 (DDR3) Dual Inline Memory Module (DIMM) sockets. A DDR3 module is notched differently from a DDR or DDR2 module. DO NOT install a DDR or DDR2 memory module to the DDR3 slot.
1-8 Chapter 1: Product introduction • The default memory operation frequency is dependent on its Serial Presence Detect (SPD), which is the standard way of accessing information from a memory module. Under the default state, some memory modules for overclocking may operate at a lower frequency than the vendor-marked value.
ASUS H81M-C 1-9 2. Remove the DIMM from the socket. Support the DIMM lightly with your ngers when pressing the retaining clips. The DIMM might get damaged when it ips out with extra force. 1.5 Expansion slots In the future, you may need to install expansion cards.

ASUS H81M-C 1-13 4. Line In port (light blue). This port connects to the tape, CD, DVD player , or other audio sources. 5. Line Out port (lime). This port connects to a headphone or a speaker . In the 4.1, 5.1 and 7.1-channel congurations, the function of this port becomes Front Speaker Out.
1-14 Chapter 1: Product introduction • For a fully congured system, we recommend that you use a power supply unit (PSU) that complies with A TX 12V Specication 2.0 (or later version) and provides a minimum power of 350W . • DO NOT forget to connect the 4-pin A TX +12V power plug.
ASUS H81M-C 1-15 3. Front panel audio connector (10-1 pin AAFP) This connector is for a chassis-mounted front panel audio I/O module that supports either HD Audio or legacy AC`97 audio standard. Connect one end of the front panel audio I/O module cable to this connector .
1-16 Chapter 1: Product introduction 6. CPU and chassis fan connectors (4-pin CPU_F AN, 4-pin CHA_F AN) Connect the fan cables to the fan connectors on the motherboard, ensuring that the black wire of each cable matches the ground pin of the connector .
ASUS H81M-C 1-17 7. USB 2.0 connectors (10-1 pin USB910, USB1 1 12) These connectors are for USB 2.0 ports. Connect the USB module cable to any of these connectors, then install the module to a slot opening at the back of the system chassis. These USB connectors comply with USB 2.
1-18 Chapter 1: Product introduction 9. System panel connector (10-1 pin P ANEL) This connector supports several chassis-mounted functions. • System power LED (2-pin PWR_LED) This 2-pin connector is for the system power LED. Connect the chassis power LED cable to this connector .
ASUS H81M-C 1-19 1.8 Onboard LEDs 1. Standby Power LED The motherboard comes with a standby power LED that lights up to indicate that the system is ON, in sleep mode, or in soft-off mode. This is a reminder that you should shut down the system and unplug the power cable before removing or plugging in any motherboard component.

Always install the latest OS version and corresponding updates to maximize the features of your hardware.

ASUS H81M-C 2-3 2.1.3 ASUS CrashFree BIOS 3 utility The ASUS CrashFree BIOS 3 is an auto recovery tool that allows you to restore the BIOS le when it fails or gets corrupted during the updating process. Y ou can restore a corrupted BIOS le using the motherboard support DVD or a USB ash drive that contains the updated BIOS le.
2-4 Chapter 2: Getting started Booting the system to a DOS environment 1. Insert the DOS-bootable USB ash drive with the latest BIOS le and BIOS Updater to your computer ’s USB port. 2. Boot your computer . When the ASUS Logo appears, press <F8> to show the BIOS Boot Device Select Menu .

2-6 Chapter 2: Getting started 2.2 BIOS setup program Use the BIOS Setup program to update the BIOS or congure its parameters. The BIOS screens include navigation keys and brief online help to guide you in using the BIOS Setup program.

Pop-up window Select a menu item and press <Enter> to display a pop-up window with the conguration options for that item.

When using a mouse, hover the pointer to the item. 2. Press <F4> on your keyboard or right-click on your mouse to add the item to My Favorites page.
ASUS H81M-C 2-1 1 2.4 Main menu The Main menu screen appears when you enter the Advanced Mode of the BIOS Setup program. The Main menu provides you an overview of the basic system information, and allows you to set the system date, time, language, and security settings.

ASUS H81M-C 2-15 2-Core Ratio Limit [Auto] This item becomes congurable only when you set CPU Core Ratio to [Per Core] and allows you to set the 2-Core Ratio Limit. Select [Auto] to apply the CPU default T urbo Ratio setting or manually assign a 2-Core Ratio Limit value that is higher than or equal to the 3-Core Ratio Limit.

If no USB device is detected, the item shows None. Legacy USB Support [Enabled] [Disabled] The USB devices can be used only for the BIOS setup program.

ASUS H81M-C 2-33 CPU Lower T emperature [20] Displays the lower limit of the CPU temperature. CPU Fan Min. Duty Cycle(%) [20] Use the <+> and <-> keys to adjust the minimum CPU fan duty cycle. The values range from 20% to 100%. When the CPU temperature is under the lower limit, the CPU fan will operate at the minimum duty cycle.
