14 Connecting the Speakers Thanks to the HTX-22HDX’ s s uperb capabilities, you can en joy surround sound with a real sense of movement in your o w n home—just like be ing in a mov ie theater or concert hall. Y ou can enjoy D VDs featuring Dolby Digital or DTS.
15 Connecting the Speakers —Continued Y ou can improve the sound quality by af fixing the in cluded rubber feet to raise the speakers off the mounting surface thereby reduc ing the contact area. The feet also make the speak ers stable and pre vent them from mo ving around.

17 Connecting the Speakers —Continued The following hookup diagram sho ws how to connect the included front speakers for 2.1-channel operation. W ith additional speak ers, such as the optiona l Onkyo SKS-22X speak er package, you can enjoy 5.1-channel surround sound.

19 Connecting A V Components —Continued Y ou can connect components with HDMI outputs to the HTX-22HDX’ s HDMI IN 1, IN 2, and IN 3 inputs and connect your HDMI TV to the HTX-22HDX’ s HDMI OUT . Y ou need HDMI cables to make HDMI connections. When you connect a component to an HDMI jack , the HDMI indicator on the display lights up.
20 Connecting A V Components —Continued • T o listen to an HDMI source component th rough the HTX-22HDX, you must conf igure your system so that video from the HDMI source com ponent can be displayed on your TV (i.e., on your TV , select the HDMI input that’ s connect ed to the HTX-22HDX’ s HDMI OUT).
21 Connecting A V Components —Continued Y ou can connect components with digital au dio outputs to the HTX-22HDX’ s DIGIT AL CO AX- IAL IN 1, OPTICAL IN 2, and OPTI CAL IN 3 inputs. Choose a digita l input (coaxial or optical) that matches the digital audio output on your source component .
22 Connecting A V Components —Continued Y ou can connect components wi th analog audio outputs to the HTX-22HDX’ s LINE 1 and LINE 2 inputs and enjo y surround sound with Dolb y Pro Logic II, DTS, and Onkyo’ s original DSP listening modes. 27 T urning On the HTX-22HDX Befor e connecting the power cord, connect all of y our speakers and other components. 1 Connect the supplied power cord to the HTX-22HDX’ s AC INLET . 2 Plug the ot her end of the po wer cor d into a suitable wall outlet.
28 Pla ying Y our Components 1. 1 Press the HTX-22HDX’ s [INPUT] button repeatedly to select an input source. T o select an input so urce with the remote controller , use its [INPUT SELECT OR] buttons. The input source will change 1 second after you release the [INPUT] or [INPUT SELECTOR] b utton.
29 Playing Y our Components —Continued Y ou can adjust the brightness of the d isplay . Press the remote controller’ s [DIMMER] but- ton repeatedly to select dim, dimmer , or normal brightness. Y ou can temporarily mute the output of the HTX-22HDX.
30 Play ing Y our Components —Continued Y ou can display various information about the current input so urce as follo ws. Press the remote controller’ s [DISPLA Y] button repeatedly to c ycle thr ough the av ail- able information. The follow ing informat ion can typically be displayed: *1.
31 Playing Y our Components —Continued Notes: • T o listen to the TV’ s audio by using the ARC (Audio Return Channel), in HDMI Setup, HDMI Control must be set to On and ARC must be set to Auto (see page 44). • DIGIT AL IN 1 (DIG1), DIGIT AL IN 2 (DIG2), or DIGIT AL IN 3 (DIG3) cannot be set the same.
32 Using the Listening Modes For a description of each listening mode , see “ About the Listen ing Modes” on page 33. T o select the listening modes, rep eatedly press the [LISTENING MODE] buttons on the HTX-22HDX or remote controller . The name of the select ed listening mode is show n on the display .
33 Using the Listening Modes —Continued The HTX-22HDX’ s listening mode s can transform your listening room into a movie theater or concert hall, with high fide lity and stunning sur round sound. Speaker Lay out Input Sources The following au dio formats are supported by the listening modes.

35 Using the Listening Modes —Continued Onky o Original DSP Modes Notes: *2. For Blu-ray discs, Dol by Digital is used. *3. The HTX-22HDX accepts DSD signals via its HDMI inputs. Depending on your player, setting your player to output PCM may produce a better sound.
36 Using the Listening Modes —Continu ed W ith the Late Night function, you can reduce the dynamic range of Do lby Digital material so that you can still hear quiet parts even when listening at low volu me lev els—ideal for watching mo vies late at night when you don’t w ant to disturb anyone.

38 Setup —Continued The onscreen setup menus app ear on the TV connected to the HDMI OUT . Note: • The onscreen setup menus can be displayed only when the video input signal is 480p, 576p, 720p, 1080i, or 1080p, or when no video signal present. Use the follo wing procedure to change the settings explained belo w .
39 Setup —Continued Sp Config (Speaker Configuratio n) W ith the Speaker Conf iguration, you can specify how may speakers you’ re using. Note: • Before you change this setting, turn do wn the vo lume. ■ Subwoof er Y es: Select if a subwoofer is used (default).
40 Setup —Continued Sp Distance (Speaker Distance) W ith the Speake r Dist ance settings, you can specify the distances from the speakers to your listening position. ■ Unit feet: Distances can be set in feet. Range: 1 to 30 feet in 1-foot steps. meter s: Distances can be set in meters.
41 Setup —Continued ■ Pan o r am a W ith this setting, you can broaden the width of the front stereo image when using the Dolby Pro Logic II listening mode.
42 Setup —Continued ■ Fro nt 5.1c h W ith this setting, you can specify ho w your fi ve surround speakers (fr ont L/R, center , and surround L/R) are arranged to get the best ef fect from the Theater -Dimensional listening mode. 44 Setup —Continued “Search…” → “(name)” → “RIHD On” If the HTX-22HDX cannot receiv e the name of a component, it will be displayed as “Player*” or “R ecor der*”, etc (“*” will be a number when there’ s two or more components).
45 Setup —Continued Notes: • Select Off if your TV is incompatible or you’ re not sure about its compatibility . • The TV Control setting can be set only when the above Contr ol and Power Control settings are both set to On.
46 T r oubleshooting If you hav e any trouble using the HTX-22HDX, look for a so lution in this sec- tion. If you can’ t resolve the issue y ourself, contact your Onkyo dealer . Can’t turn on the HTX- 22HDX • Make sure that the power cord is plugged in to the wall outlet properly .
47 T r oubleshooting —Continued The subwoofer produces no sound • If the source material contains no audio in the LFE channel, the subwoofer produces no sound. • Check the Speaker Configuration (page 39). There’ s no sound with a cer tain signal for- mat • Check the digital audio output setting on the source component.
48 T r oubleshooting —Continued The HTX-22HDX contains a microcomputer for signal processing and control functions. In very rare situations, se vere interf erence, noise from an external source, or static elec- tricity may cause it to lockup .
49 HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) About HDMI Designed to meet the increased demands of digital TV , HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) is a ne w digital in terf ace standard for connecting TVs, proj ectors, Blu-ray/D V D player/recorder , set-top boxes, and other video components.

53 Using an -compatible TV , Pla yer , or Recorder , which stands for Remote Interact iv e ov er HDMI, is the na me of the system con trol function found on Onkyo components. The HTX- 22HDX can be used with CEC (Consumer Electronics Control), which allo ws system contro l o ver HDMI and is part of the HDMI standard.
