5 Installing the remote controller batteries 1. Remov e the battery compartment cover , as shown. 2. Insert two AAA (R03)-size batteries into the battery compart- ment. Carefully follo w the polarity diagram (positive (+) and negati ve (–) symbols) inside the battery compartment.
6 A udio equipment connections • Do not connect the A C power cord (mains lead) to the w all outlet (the mains) until you have completed all the other connections including the connections on page 7, and the speaker connections on page 8.

8 Connecting speaker systems Connecting left and right speakers • The load impedance of each speaker must be at least 4 ohms. • Do not use unnecessarily long or extremely thin speak er cor ds. Otherwise, the DC resistance of the speak er cor ds may become too high, lowering the damping f actor and causing the sound quality to deteriorate.

11 Making antenna connections Connecting an AM outdoor antenna The outdoor antenna will be more ef fective if it is stretched horizon- tally abov e a window or outside. • Do not remov e the AM loop antenna. • To av oid the risk of lightning and electrical shock, grounding is necessary .

14 3 4 ENTER 1 2 Setting the c loc k Setting the clock 1. Press the TIMER button until “ADJUST” is selected on the display , then press the ENTER b utton. The day of the week will flash on the display . 2. Press the b uttons until the desir ed day of the week is selected, then press the ENTER b utton.
15 Clock Call function Press the CLOCK CALL button to display the time, press again to cancel the time display . Note • If the time has not been set, “ ADJUST” will flash on the display . In this case, press again the CLOCK CALL button, then set the clock.

17 Muting / Listening with the headphones Listening with the headphones Connect the stereo headphones mini plug to the PHONES jack. T he speakers will reproduce no sound while the headphones are con- nected. Tip • Y ou can adjust the sound through the headphones as well as through the speakers.

19 Pla ying a CD RANDOM playbac k (remote controller onl y) All the tracks on the disc will be shuf fled, then pla y ed back. To start RANDOM playback, press the RANDOM b utton while the CD is stopped, or press the RANDOM b utton dur ing playback. • Y ou can combine the RANDOM mode with the MEMOR Y mode.

21 Precautions for handling the Compact Disc (CD) This section sho ws you how to handle, clean, and store discs. 22 Receiving stations T uning the radio 1. Select FM or AM using the INPUT b uttons or the IN- PUT buttons on the r emote controller . 2. Press and hold the TUNING/PRESET b uttons f or about 0.5 seconds to change the frequency . The indoor antenna should be installed on a wall or other surface in the position which giv es the best reception.
23 MEMORY FM MODE CLEAR Presetting your favorite stations Y ou can store your fav orite stations in the preset memory . Follow the procedure below: 1. Select FM or AM using the INPUT b uttons or the IN- PUT buttons on the r emote controller . 2. Press and hold the TUNING/PRESET b uttons f or about 0.
24 MEMORY FM MODE CLEAR Listening to a stereo radio station When you tune in a stereo FM station, the STEREO indicator lights up if the signal is suff iciently strong. If the signal is weak, you can still listen to the station in mono mode. In this case, tune in as follows.
25 Receiving RDS (European models onl y) RDS reception is av ailable only on the European models, and only in areas where RDS broadcasts are av ailable.
26 Using the timer T he CR-305FX features a T imer function that enables you to start playing or recording a specified component at a specif ied time . T o use this function, you need to connect this unit to other components via REMO TE CONTROL jacks.
27 Changing the WEEKD A Y and WEEKEND settings Y ou can define or change which day is WEEKDA Y or WEEKEND. Y ou can also define the day as both WEEKDA Y and WEEKEND in order to program two timer settings on the same day . The initial factory settings are: WEEKD A Y : Monday - Friday WEEKEND : Saturday and Sunday 1.
28 Programming to pla y at a specified time The clock of this unit must be set correctly before programming the timer . Before using the timer for listening to or recording broadcast programs, you need to store the preset stations. (Refer to “Presetting y our fa vorite stations” on page 23 for information how to pr eset stations.
29 Programming to record at a specified time REC mode of the T imer function enables you to record a specified source at a specified time. To perform timer recording, you need to use a stereo cassette tape deck that is made by ONKYO, featuring the mark.
30 6 Using the timer 6. Press the ST ANDBY/ON button on the remote contr oller to set the Standby mode. Notes • Since muting is automatically turned on when the timer is used to record, the sound cannot be heard during recording. T o moni- tor recording, press the MUTING button on the remote control- ler to cancel muting.
