19 Connecting the A V receiver Speaker Config uration For 7.1-channel surround-s ound playback, you need se ven speakers and a po wered subwoofer . The following table shows which channels you should use based on the number of speakers you ha ve.
20 Connecting the A V receiver —Contin ued Connecting the Speaker Cab les T erminal posts Push terminals The following illustration sh ows wh ich speaker should be connected to each pair of terminals for up to 7.1-channel playback. If you’ re using only one surround back speak er , conne ct it to the po wer amp lif ier’ s left terminals.
21 Connecting the A V receiver —Continued The speakers can easily be w all mounted by using the keyhole slots. T o mount the front or surround speakers vertically , use the keyhole slot sho wn to hang each speak er on a screw that’ s securely scre wed into the w all.
22 Connecting the A V receiver —Contin ued The FR ONT L/R and SURR B A CK L/R terminal posts can be used with front speakers and surround back speakers respecti v ely , or bi-amped to pro vide separate tweeter and woofer feeds for front speak ers, providing improv ed bass and treble performance.
23 Connecting the A V receiver —Continued This section explains ho w to connect the supplied indoor FM antenna and AM loop ante nna, and how to connect commercially a v ailable outd oor FM and AM antennas. The A V receiv er won’ t pick up any radio signals without any an tenna connected, so you must connect the antenna to use the tuner .

41 Fir st Time Setup This section explains the settings that you need to make before using the A V receiv er for the very f irst time. If you connect a video component to an HDMI IN, you must assign that input to an input selector . For example, if you connect your D VD play er to HDMI IN1, you must assign HDMI IN1 to the D VD/BD input selector .
42 First Time Setup —Contin ued If you connect a video component to a COMPONENT VIDEO IN, you must assign that input to an input selector . F or example, if you connect your D VD player to COMPONENT VIDEO IN 2, you must assign COMPONENT VIDEO IN 2 to the D VD/BD input selector .
43 First Time Setup —Continued If you connect a component to a digital audio input, you must assign that input to an input selector . For example, if you connect your CD player to OPTICAL IN 1, you must assign OPTICAL IN 1 to the CD input select or .
44 First Time Setup —Contin ued If the impedance of any speaker is 4 ohms or more b ut less than 6, set the Speaker Impedance to 4 ohms. North American models do not support speakers with an impedance of less than 6 ohms. T o use bi-amping, you must change the Speak er T ype setting.
45 First Time Setup —Continued If you connect an u -ca pable Onkyo RI Dock to the TV/T APE IN, CBL/SA T IN or VCR/D VR IN jacks, for u to work properly , you mu st change this setting.
46 First Time Setup —Contin ued W ith the supplied calibrated microphone, Audyssey 2EQ automatic ally determines the num ber of speakers connected, their size for purposes of bass management, optimum cros sove r frequencies to the subwoofer (if present), and distances from the primary listening position.
47 First Time Setup —Continued Using Audysse y 2EQ™ Notes: • Before starting Audyssey 2EQ™ Room Correction and Speaker Setup, arrange the room and connect the speakers as you would fo r enjoying movies. Changes to the room after auto setup requires you run the auto setup again, as room EQ characteristics may hav e changed.
48 First Time Setup —Contin ued Notes: • When the room co rrection and speaker setup is complete, the Equalizer Settings (page 70) will be se t to “Audyssey” and the “Dynamic EQ” (page 72) will be set to “On”.
49 Basic Operations Basic A V receiver Operation 1 Use the A V r eceiver’ s inpu t selector buttons to select an input source. T o select an input so urce with the remote contr oller , press its [RECEIVER] bu tton, and then use its INPUT SELECT OR buttons.
50 Basic Oper ations —Continued This section explains functions that can be used with an y input source. Y ou can adjust the bass and treble for the front speakers, except when the Direc t, Pure Audio listening mode is selected.
51 Basic Operations —Continued Y ou can adjust the brightness of the display . Y ou can temporarily mute the output of the A V recei ver. T o unmute the A V receiv er, press the remot e controller’ s [MUTING] b utton again, or adjust the volume. The outp ut is unmuted and the MUTING indicator goes off.
52 Basic Oper ations —Continued The Music Optimizer func tion enhances the sound quality of compressed music files. Use it with music files that use “lossy” compression, such as MP3. Note: The Music Optimizer function only works with PCM digital audio input signals with a sa mpling rate below 48 kHz and analog audio input signals.
53 Listening to the Radio For AM/FM tuning to work properly , you must specify the AM/FM frequency step used in your area. Note that when this setting is cha nged, all radi o presets are deleted. 93 T roub leshooting If you hav e any trouble using the A V receiv er, look for a solution in this section. If you can’ t resolve the issue yourself, contact your Onkyo dealer . Can’t turn on the A V receiver • Make sure that the po wer cord is plugged into the w all outlet properly .
94 T roub leshooting —Continued The front high speaker s or surround bac k speakers produce no sound • Depending on the current liste ning mode, no sound may be produced by the front high speakers or surround back speakers. T ry another listening mode (page 61).
95 T roub leshooting —Continued • If the message “Resolution Error” appears on the A V recei ver’ s display , this indicates that your TV does not support the current video resolution and you need to select another resolution on your D VD player .
