ASUS Eee PC 2-3 Built-in Camera (optional) The built-in camera allows picture taking or video recording . D ispla y Panel The display panel functions the same as a desktop monitor . The Eee PC uses an active matrix TFT L CD, which provides exc ellent viewing like that of desktop monitors.

The bottom of the Eee PC can get v er y hot. Be careful when handling the Eee PC while it is in operation or rec ently been in operation.
2-6 Chapter 2: K nowing the P ar ts B a ttery Lock - Spring The spring battery lock keeps the batter y pack secure . When the battery pack is inser ted , it will automatically lock. When removing the ba tter y pack, this spring lock must be retained in the unlocked position.

The built-in modem does not support the voltage used in digital phone systems. DO NO T connect the modem por t to a digital phone system or else damage will occur to the Eee PC.

3-2 Chapter 3: G etting Started THE POWER ADAPTER MA Y BECOME W ARM T O HOT WHEN IN USE. BE SURE NOT TO C OVER THE ADAPTER AND KEEP IT A W A Y FROM YOUR BOD Y . Power System Using A C P ower The Eee PC pow er comprises two parts, the power adapter and the battery power system.
ASUS Eee PC 3-3 Damage may occur if you use a diff erent adapter to po wer the Eee PC or use the Eee PC’ s adapter to power other electrical devices. If there is smoke, burning scent, or extreme heat coming from the AC-DC adapt er , seek servicing. Seek ser vicing if you suspect a faulty AC-DC adapter .
3-4 Chapter 3: G etting Started Never attempt t o remove the ba ttery pack while the Eee PC is turned ON, as this may result in the loss of working data. Only use battery packs and power adapters supplied with this Eee PC or specifically approv ed by the manufacturer or retailer for use with this model or else damage may occur t o the Eee PC.
ASUS Eee PC 3-5 Emergency Shutdown & Reset In case your operating syst em cannot properly turn OFF or restar t , there are additional wa ys to shutdown and r eset your Eee PC: Shutdown: Hold the power button until the system shuts down.
3-6 Chapter 3: G etting Started Touchpad Usage Clicking/T apping - With the cursor o ver an item, press the left button or use your fingertip to touch the touchpad lightly , k eeping your finger on the touchpad until the it em is selected. The selected item will change color .
ASUS Eee PC 3-7 Dragging - Dragging means to pick up an it em and place it anywhere on the screen y ou wish. Y ou can move the cursor o ver the item you select, and while keeping the left button depressed, moving the cursor to the desired loca tion, then release the button.
3-8 Chapter 3: G etting Started Keyboard Usage Special F unc tion Ke ys The follo wing defines the colored hot keys on the Eee PC’ s keyboard. The colored c ommands can only be accessed by first pressing and holding the function key while pressing a key with a colored command .
ASUS Eee PC 3-9 T ask Manager Icon (F6) : Initiates the T ask M anager to view the application process or t erminates applications. Crossed Speaker Ic on (F7) : Mutes the speaker . Speaker Down Ic on (F8) : Decreases speak er volume . Speaker Up Ic on (F9) : Increases the speaker volume .
3-10 Chapter 3: G etting Started Adjust the windo w If the application window is not in the center of the scr een and you want to adjust the position of the window , follow the instructions below to adjust the window position. 1. Hold <Alt> and the touchpad left button to turn the cursor into a cross arrow .
ASUS Eee PC 3-11 First Run Wizard F or the first time you start your Eee PC, the First Run Wizard will auto-launch and lead you through setting up y our prefer ences and some basic information. F ollow the wizard instructions to finish the initiation.
3-12 Chapter 3: G etting Started 4. Enter your P assword and enter again to confirm the password . Click Next to continue . 5. Click to expand the drop-down menu and locate the city you are in or the nearest city in your time zone. A djust the correct date and your local time.
ASUS Eee PC 3-13 Operating Mode The system is designed with an opera ting mode that is function- oriented and clearly divides functions into six categories, Internet , W ork , Learn , Play , Settings , F avor ites .
3-14 Chapter 3: G etting Started Shutdown Do the following instructions to turn down your E ee PC. 1. Click the red pow er switch on the taskbar . Or , click Instant Shutdown fr om the Settings tab and selec t Shutdown . Or , press the power switch of the E ee PC directly .

4-2 Chapter 4: Using the Eee PC Internet C onfiguring a wireless networ k connection 1. Pr ess + (<Fn> + <F2>) to activate the wir eless LAN function. 2. Click Wireless N etworks from Internet tab . 4. When connecting, you ma y hav e to enter a passwor d.
ASUS Eee PC 4-3 5. After a connection has been established , the connection is shown on the list. 6. Y ou can see the wireless signal stre ngth bars on the OS taskbar . In Windows XP en vironment, the wireless connection icon disappears when you disable the wireless LAN by pr essing + (<Fn> + <F2>).
4-4 Chapter 4: Using the Eee PC C onfiguring a network c onnection If you want to obtain netw ork access, connect the network cable, with RJ-45 connectors on each end , to the network por t on the Eee PC and the other end to a hub or switch.
ASUS Eee PC 4-5 3. Select the t ype of connection you are using and click Next . 4. T oggle the first option D ynamic IP address (DHCP) and click Next . 2. Click Creat e to create a network connection. 5. Enter a name for this connection and click Next .
4-6 Chapter 4: Using the Eee PC 6. Click F inish to apply the settings or click Back to make changes. Using a static IP: 1. Repeat the step 1~3 of Using a dynamic IP to start the static IP network configurat on. 2. T oggle the second option Static IP address and click Next .
ASUS Eee PC 4-7 Contact your service provider if you ha ve problem connecting to the internet. 4. There is no need to enter the DNS and WINS address unless you wan t to ov erride the ser ver provided DNS server address. If so , enter the preferred DNS Server address, alternativ e address and WINS address of your service provider .

Select the t ype of connection you are using and click Ne xt . 3. Select the har dwar e that y ou want to use to make y our connection and click Next .

ASUS Eee PC 4-11 Dial-up (Optional) The telephone wire used t o connect the Eee PC ’ s internal modem should hav e either two or four wires (only tw o wires (telephone line #1) is used by the modem) and should hav e an RJ-11 connector on both ends.

ASUS Eee PC 6-3 Driv ers menu The Drivers menu shows a vailable device drivers when the system detects installed devices. Install the necessary drivers to activate the devices.
6-4 Chapter 6: Suppor t DVD & System Reco very Utilities menu The Utilities menu shows the applications that the E ee PC suppor ts. InstAll - Installation Wizard for Utilities Installs all the utilities.
ASUS Eee PC 6-5 C ontact Click the Contact tab to displa y the ASUS contact information. Y ou can also find this information on the inside front c over of this user guide. Manual The Manual menu contains a list of supplementary user manuals. Click an item to open the f older of the user manual.

ASUS Eee PC 6-7 System Recovery There are thr ee ways to perform the system reco very . Refer to the following sections for details . Use the ↑ and ↓ keys to select whi ch entry is highlighted. Press enter to boot the selected OS, 'e' to edit the commands before booting, or 'c' for command-line.
6-8 Chapter 6: Suppor t DVD & System Reco very Using the Support DVD 1. Connect an external DVD optical drive to your Eee PC and insert the Suppor t DVD into the optical driv e (System needs to be powered ON). 2. Restar t the syst em and press <F2> on bootup to enter the BIOS setup .
ASUS Eee PC 6-9 3. Select Copy EEE PC image files to USB flash and make it bootable and click Run . Note that the disk for E ee PC recov er y is corr ect if you have several USB flash disks c onnected to the PC. 2. Click Utilities on the left and select ASUS Linux USB Flash Utility .
6-10 Chapter 6: Suppor t DVD & System Reco very 4. Click Y es to continue . The system starts formating y our USB flash disk. 5. A dialog box appears. F ollow the instructions to ejec t the USB disk and replug it to your PC/NB . Click Retry to continue.
ASUS Eee PC 6-11 7. Connect the USB flash disk to your Eee PC. 8. Start the system and press <F2> on bootup to enter the BIOS setup . Go to Boot > Hard Disk Drives and select the USB drive (may be labeled as “USB:XXXX”) as the 1st Drive.
