7 1 Basic opera tion Basic operation Being able to use t he buttons effectively is important for operating th e digital camera. Just display a menu on the monitor and use the buttons to choose a setting. Familiarize yourself with the buttons and menus before reading the explanations of the various functions.

Tips before you start taking pictures 2 23 Recording pictures Pictures taken are st ored in the intern al memory. You can also u se xD-Picture Card (re ferred to as “c ard” in this manu al) to store pictures . The ca rd has great er capacit y than the internal memory, and so, is able to store more pictures.
2 Tips before you start taking pictures 24 Using a card Card is availabl e for this camera. The card co rrespo nds to the f ilm of a norma l camera fo r reco rding th e pictur es you have t aken. Pictu res reco rded and s tored on the ca rd can eas ily be er ased , overwr itten , and/or edited on a computer .

27 3 Shooting A professional photographer adjusts the exposure to the optimal setting, chooses the best focusing method and eve n selects the type of film according to the subject. With a digital camera, you don’t need to learn how to make d ifficult settings.
3 Shooti ng 28 Selecting a shooting mode according to the situation Use the mode dial t o switch betwe en shooting mode s before taking pictures. You can take pi ctures with the opti mum settings by setting the mode dial according t o the sh ooting c onditions o r purpose.

3 Shooti ng 34 Recording movies You can record movies with this came ra. You can pl ayback the recorded movies with th is camera. So und can not be record ed. The focus and zoo m are locked. If th e distance to the subject changes, focus may be compromised.
Shooti ng 3 35 Self-timer shooting This funct ion lets you ta ke pictures using the self -timer. Fix th e camera securely on a tripod for self-t imer shooting . This functi on is useful fo r taking picture s when you want to be inclu ded in the photo graph.
3 Shooti ng 36 Panorama shooting You can t ake advantage of panorama shootin g with an Ol ympus xD- Picture Card. Panorama shootin g lets you connect pictures wit h overlappin g edges into a si ngle pan oramic pict ure, usin g the OLYMPUS Master software.

4 Playba ck 44 Playback on TV Use the video cabl e provided with the camera to playback recorded images on your TV. Both a still picture an d a movie can be played back . 1 Make sure that the TV and camera are turned off. Con nect the VIDEO OUT jack on the camera to the video input terminal on the TV using the video c able.
Playback on TV Playback 4 45 You can select NTSC or PAL accordin g to your TV's video signal type. Select the video signa l type bef ore connecti ng the camera to the TV. If you select the wrong video signal type, the recorded pi ctures will not be pla yed back properly on your TV.
4 Playba ck 46 Protecting pictures You are recommended to pro tect impo rtant pict ures to av oid acciden tally erasing t hem. Protected pict ures cannot be erased by the si ngle-frame/all -frame erase function, but they are all erased by formatting. [ 0 ] i g “How to use the menus” (P.
Playback 4 47 Erasing pictures This function erases recorded pictures. Pictures can be erase d either one at a time or all the pict ures in the int ernal memory or card a t once. • When you want to erase pict ures in the inte rnal memory , do not insert the card.

52 5 Useful functions Setting the date and time This functi on lets you set th e date and time. The date and time is saved with each picture, and is used in the fi le name.
53 Useful function s 5 Resetting the settings to the default (RESET) The camera reta ins the changed set tings even i f the power is turn ed off. To reset the set tings to the factory def ault sett ing, use the reset fun ction. 1 Press p . • The [RESET ] scre en is di splayed .
54 5 Useful functions Copying pictures to a card (BACKUP) You can copy (backup) al l the ima ge data stored in the i nternal memo ry to the card. Th e image dat a in t he internal me mory is not erased by cop ying it to the card . The card is requir ed to use the b ackup function.
55 Useful function s 5 Setting t he time peri od to swit ch to the sleep mode (SLEEP) The camera automatic ally switches t o the sleep mode and st ops operati ng if not used fo r the specifie d time period. You can spe cify th e time period before the camera enters sl eep mode.
56 6 Printing p ictures You can print out the pictures you h ave taken either at a photo store or at home on your own printer. If you go to a photo store, it is a good idea to store the print reser vation data on the card first. This lets you se lect the pictures you want to print and decide how many prints you want.

When you connect your digital camera for the first time, the iPhoto application starts automatically, so close this appl ication and start OLYMPUS Master.
