Monitor indications 9 Getting started Memory gauge The memory gauge lights up whe n you take a picture. While t he gauge is lit, the camera is storing the picture on the ca rd. The memory gauge indication changes as shown below depending on the shooting status.

11 Getting started Loading the batteries This camera uses two CR-V3 lithium battery packs or four AA (R6) NiMH batteries, NiCd batteries, alkaline batteries or lithium batteries. 1 Make sure th at: 2 Slide the batt ery compartm ent cover in the direct ion of (the direction indicated by the mark on t he cover) , and lift it up in the dire ction of .
Loading the batteries 12 Getting started Selecting batteries or the optional AC adapter In addition to the batter ies provided, this camera can use the followi ng types of battery or AC adapter. You are recommended to choose the power source best suited to the situation.
Loading the batteries 13 Getting started • Manganese (zinc-carbon) batteries cannot be used. • If the batteries become exhausted, when the camera is connected to a PC for a long time while powered by the batteries and you are downloading images from the camera, the image dat a may be lost or damaged.
14 Getting started Inserting the card (SmartMed ia) This reference manual uses the term “ca rd” when referring to SmartMedia . The card is convenient, for example, when you are traveling a nd you want to take a lot of pictures. When the card is inserted , the pictures you have taken are stored on the card.
Inserting the card (SmartMedia) 15 Getting started 1 Make sure th at: 2 Open the card cover . 3 Insert the card as far as it will go in the direction shown in the illustration. There is an arrow inside the ca rd cover, indicating the direction in which th e card should be inserted.
Inserting the card (SmartMedia) 16 Getting started Removing the card Hold the card with your fingertips an d pull it out in the direction of the arrow. Never open the card cover, or remove the card or the batteries while the camera is turned on. Doing so could destroy all data on the card.
17 Getting started T urning the power on/off When shootin g pictures Power on: Open the lens ba rrier. The camera turns on in the shooting mode. Power off: Close the lens barrier. The camera turns off. When playing back pictures on the camera Power on: Press the (monitor) button wi th the lens barrier closed.
Turning the power on/off 18 Getting started What to do if the CARD SETUP screen is displayed When the power is turned on, the camera ch ecks the card automatically. If the card in the camera has to be formatted, t he following screen appears. Note that all existing data stored on the car d is erased when t he card is f ormatted.
19 Getting started Setting the date and time 1 Open the lens barr ier . 2 Press . The shooting mode top menu is displayed. 3 Press on the arrow pad to select MODE MENU.

The cursor moves to the next setting field. The following steps show the procedur e when the Y-M-D format is selected.

28 Shooting basics Shooting basics Holding the camera Hold the camera firmly with both hands while keeping your elbows at your sides to prevent the camera from moving. When taking pictures in th e vertical position, hold the camera so th at the flash is at the top.
29 Shooting basics T aking still pict ures You can take still pictures using either the viewfi nder or the monitor. Both methods are easy as all you have to do is to press the shutter button. The recorded picture will be stored on the card if you have inserted one, or in the internal memory if you have not in serted a card.

Taking still pictures 31 Shooting basics Comparison of the viewfi nder and monitor • Press the shutter button gently using the ball of your finger. If it is pressed hard, the camera may move and pictures may come out blurred. • Never open the card cover , remove the batteries or disconnect the AC adapter while the green lamp is blinking.
32 Shooting basics Recording movies You can record movies with this camera. Recorde d movies can be played back or stored separately as still pictures using t he index function. “Creating an index” ( p.71) 1 Display the top menu in the shooting mode.
33 Shooting basics Using the flash In the auto-flash mode (factory default setting), the flash is designed to fire automatically when sh ooting under low light or aga inst strong backlight, but you can change the flash mode to suit different shooting situatio ns.
Using the flash 34 Shooting basics Auto-flash (N o indication) The flash fires automatically in low light or backlight condit ions. To shoot a subject with backlight, posit ion the target mark o ver the subject in the viewfinder. Red-eye reduction flash ( ) The light from the flash may make the subject’s eyes appear red in pictures.
Using the flash 35 Shooting basics Flash off ( ) The flash does not fire even in low light conditions. Use this mode in situations where flash photography is not desi red or is prohibited, or when you want to shoot a natural-looking twi light or night scene.
36 Shooting basics Zooming in on a subject (Digital zoom) The maximum possi ble magnification is 5x. 1 Open the lens barr ier . The camera turns on in the shooting mode. 2 Press . The monitor turns on au tomatically. 3 Press while obser ving your subject on the monito r .
37 Shooting basics T aking close-up pictures (Macro mode) The macro mode allows you to shoot a subject at a distance of 25 - 60 cm/0.8 - 2 ft. You can also use the macro mode to shoot a subject at a distance of more than 60 cm/2 ft .
38 Advanced shooting Advanced shooting Using the self-timer This function is useful for taking pictures with your self included in the photograph. Fix the camera securely on a tr ipod for self-timer shoot ing. 1 Open the lens barr ier . The camera turns on in the shooting mode.
39 Advanced shooting Shooting pictures sequentially (Sequential shooting) This function allows you to take a rapid succession of still pictures by pressing and holding the shutter button (over 8 pictures at 1.
40 Advanced shooting V arying the ima ge brightnes s (Exposure comp ensation) This function allows you to make fine changes to th e automatic exposure setting. In some situation s, you may get better re sults when the exposure that the camera sets is compensate d (adjusted) manually.
Varying the image brightness (Expo sure compensation) 41 Advanced shooting 5 Press to select the exposure compensation v alue. Select a [+] value to bright en the image or a [-] value to darken the image. The exposure compensation value is set. To close the menu, press twice.
42 Advanced shooting Selecting the metering area (Spot meterin g) In a backlight situation, your subject may appear dark if t he picture is taken with the normal metering value (Digita l ESP metering).

To close the menu, press twice. 6 T ake the pict ure while posi tioning the target mar k on your subject in the viewfind er . The camera returns to ESP (factory default setting) when the lens barrier is closed.
44 Advanced shooting Adjusting the color tone (White balance) Color reproduction differs depe nding on the lighting condition s. For instance, when daylight, the setting sun or tu ngsten lighting are reflected on white paper, the shade of white produced will be slightly different fo r each.

To close the menu, press twice. 6 T ake the pict ure. • The white balance setting returns to AUTO (factory default setting) when the lens barrier is closed.

If the image will be printed, hig her resolutions (larger numbers) are recommende d so that the image will be clearer.
49 Advanced shooting Panorama shooting You can take advantage of panor ama shooting with the provided Ol ympus CAMEDIA-brand SmartMedia card. (No n-Olympus cards do not support this feature.) Panorama sh ooting lets you connect pictures with overlapp ing edges into a single pan oramic picture, using the p rovided CAMEDIA Master software.
Panorama shooting 50 Advanced shooting 5 Make sure that the e dges of the pictures overlap, then take your pict ures. Panorama shooting is possible for up to 10 pictures. When you try to take more t han 10 pictures, the mark is displayed. 6 Press to finish pan orama shooting.
51 Advanced shooting T aking two-in-o ne pictures This function allows you to combine two pictures taken in succession and store them as a single picture. 1 Display the top menu in the shooting mode. • Open the lens b arrier. •P r e s s . 2 Press to select FUNCTION.
Taking two-in-one pictures 52 Advanced shooting • The two-in-one picture mode is canceled when is pressed or the lens barrier is closed. • During two-in-one picture shooting, the sequential shooting and self- timer functions are disabled.
53 Advanced shooting T aking a picture of yourself (Self-portrait shooti ng) To enable you to hold the camera at arm’s length and take a picture of yourse lf, the camera automatically selects the opt imal settings for self-port rait shooting. 1 Display the top menu in the shooting mode.
54 Playba ck Playback Playing back still pictures You can play back pictures one by one on the monitor. 1 Press with the le ns barrier cl osed. The monitor turns on and d isplays the last picture taken. (Sing le-frame playback) 2 Press . : Displays the previous picture.

Playing back still pictures 58 Playba ck Slide-show This function automatically displays pictures one af ter another, as if you are watching a slide-show. It is useful when you want to view the pictures you have taken in order. 1 Display the to p menu in the pla yback mode.

Playing back movies 60 Playba ck Operations when FRAME BY FRA ME is selected : Displays the first frame of the movie. : Displays the last frame of the movie. : Displays the next frame. The movie can be displayed continuously by holding the butto n down.
61 Playba ck Erasing pictures Recorded pictures can also be era sed. This can be done either one frame or all the pictures stored in the internal memory or on th e card at a time. Single-frame erase 1 Press with the le ns barrier cl osed. The monitor turns on.

Protecting pictures (Protect) 65 Playba ck • The indicator is displayed at the top right of the protected picture. • Protection on each picture remains even when the camera is turned off. • Protected pictures cannot be erased by the single-frame/all-frame erase function, but they can be all erased with the format function.
66 Playba ck Editing still pictures Creating black and white pictures This function ena bles you to tu rn the selected picture i nto a black and white picture. 1 Press with the le ns barrier cl osed. The monitor turns on. 2 Press to select the picture you want to turn into a bl ack and white picture.
Editing still pictures 67 Playba ck Creating sepia-toned pictures This function enables you to turn th e selected pictur e into sepia tones. 1 Press with the le ns barrier cl osed. The monitor turns on. 2 Press to select the pictu re you want to t urn into a sepia- toned picture.
Editing still pictu res 68 Playba ck Resizing pictures This function enables you to change the file size of the selected picture to 640 × 480 or 320 × 240 and store it separat ely as a new picture. Use this function when you want to reduce the volume of image data, such as when attaching a picture to e-ma il.
Editing still pictures 69 Playba ck Rotating pictures Pictures taken with the camera held vertically are displayed horizon tally. In this case, you can use this function to disp lay the picture vertically. You can rotate the selected picture 90 degrees clockwi se or counterclockwise.

To close the menu, press twice. +90° : clockwise –90° : counter clockwise • Y ou cannot rotate pictures taken in SHQ mode, movies, protected pictures or pictures that have been edited on a PC.
71 Playba ck Editing movies Creating an index Movies can be displayed as indexes of still frames. Indexes can be stored as still pictures. 1 Press with the le ns barrier cl osed. The monitor turns on. 2 Press to select a pict ure with the in dicator .
Editing movies 72 Playba ck 6 Press to sele ct INDEX, then press . The 9 frames extracted f rom the movie appear as an index display, th en the camera returns to the p layback mode. The index picture i s stored as a new picture. To cancel the index function, select CANCEL and press .
73 Camera settings Camera settings T urning the beep sound off (Beep sound) You can turn the volume of the beep sound used fo r button operations or warnings to OFF. 1 Display the top menu in the shooting mode. • Open the lens b arrier. •P r e s s .
74 Camera settings Formatting (Card setup/Memory setup) This function lets you format cards or th e internal mem ory. Formatting prepares cards to receive data. Before using non-Olympus cards or cards which have been formatted on a PC, you must forma t them with this camera.
Formatting (Card setup/Memory setup) 75 Camera settings Formatting can also be executed from the playback mode. • Never open the card cover or remove the batteries during formatting as this may cause malfunction of the card. • Never connect or disconnect the AC adapter during formatting as this may cause malfunction of the card.
76 Camera settings Copying pictures to the card (Memory backup) You can copy (backu p) all the image data stored in t he internal memory to the card. The image data in the internal memory is not erased by co pying it to the card. You must insert the card before copying.
77 Camera settings Viewing a picture immediat ely afte r shooting (Re c View) You can view the picture you have just taken on the monitor for 3 seconds while it is being recorded. Rec View settings ON : The picture being recorded is displayed on the monitor.
78 Camera settings Saving the settings (All Reset) This function lets you choose whether or not the camera saves its current settings when the power is turned of f. For settings to be saved, see “Functions that All Reset affects” ( p.79). 1 Display the top menu in the shooting mode.

81 Camera settings Adjusting the monitor brightness You can adjust the brightness of the monitor according to the surrounding conditions to make it easier to see. 1 Display the top menu in the shooting mode. • Open the lens b arrier. •P r e s s . 2 Press to select MODE MENU.
82 Camera settings Pixel Mapping The Pixel Mapping feature allows the camera to check a CCD and image processing circuit automatically. It is not necessary to operate this functi on frequently.
83 Print settin gs Print settings How to print pictures When you want to print out pictures, perfo rm print reservation. Several different printing option s are available: Printing at a photo la b tha.
How to print pictures 84 Print settin gs • If a card contains DPOF rese rvations set by another device, entering reservations using this camera may overwrite the previous reservations. • This camera cannot be directly connected to printers such as the Olympus P-300 digital printer .
85 Print settin gs Making a print reservation on the card By specifying the desired number of prints of each picture on the card and whether or not the date and time are to be printed, you can print out th e desired picture according to the print reservation data with a DPOF- compatible printer or at a DPOF photo lab.
Making a print reservation on the card 86 Print settin gs Confirm the print reservation data If print reservat ion data is already st ored on the card, the PRINT ORDER SETTING screen appears, giving you the choice of rese tting the data or keeping it.

If print reservation dat a has already been stored, the number of print s already set appears.

89 Troubleshooting Troubleshooting Error codes Monitor Possible cause Corrective acti on The card i s not inse rted, or it cannot be recogniz ed. Insert a card, or reinsert the ca rd correctly. Picture s can be stor ed in the inte rnal memory if no card i s inserted.
Error codes 90 Troubleshooting There are no picture s in the internal memo ry. The internal me mory contains no pictures. Record pictures. The selected picture cannot be played back on this camera. Use image pro cessing software on a PC to view it. If that can not be done, the image file is partially da maged.

4 F low cha r t By connecting the camera to a computer with the provided USB cable, images on a card can be transferred to the computer. Some OS’s (o perating systems) may need a special setup befor e connecting to t he camera for t he first time. Follow the chart below.
