8 2 Crea ting your netw ork P ositioning your rout er F or the best wireless signal transmission between the ADSL router and the network devices connected to it , ensure that you: • Place the ADSL rout er in a centralized area f or a maximum wireless co verage for the network devices .
9 Wha t you need T o set up your network, you need one or two c omputers that meet the following sy stem requirements: • Ethernet RJ-45 (LAN) por t (10Base-T/100Base-T X/1000BaseT X) • IEEE 802.
10 C onnec ting your de vices Wired c onnec tion IMPORT ANT! • Use wired connection in setting up your ADSL rout er to avoid possible setup problems due to wireless unc er tainty . • Before setting up y our DSL-N55U, do the follo wing: • Disconnect the cables/wires from your existing modem setup .
11 Before y ou proceed Disable the pro x y server , if enabled . Windo ws ® 7 1. Click Start > Internet Explorer to launch the brow ser . 2. Click T ools > Internet options > C onnec tions tab > LAN settings . NO TE: Before configuring y our DSL-N55U, do the steps described in this section for your host computer and network clients.
12 MA C OS 1. F rom your Safari browser , click Safari > Pref erences > Adv anced > Change Settings... 2. F rom the Network screen, deselect FTP Pro x y and W eb Pro x y (HT TP) . 3. Cllick Apply Now when done. NO TE: Refer to y our browser's help feature f or details on disabling the proxy server .
13 3. T o obtain the IPv4 IP settings automatically , tick Obtain an IP address automatically . T o obtain the IPv6 IP settings automatically , tick Obtain an IPv6 address automatically . 4. Click OK when done. Set the T CP/IP settings to automatically obtain an IP address.
14 MA C OS 1. Click the Apple icon located on the top left of your screen. 2. Click Sy stem Pref erences > Network > C onfigure... 3. Fr om the TCP/IP tab , select Using DHCP in the C onfigure IPv4 dropdown list. 4. Cllick Apply Now when done.
15 1. Before starting ADSL setting procedure, ensure that the ADSL indicator on DSL-N55U front panel bec omes solid. 2. Launch your web bro wser . The QIS web page appears automatically and starts detec ting y our connec tion type, VPI/ VCI value and encapsula tion mo de .
16 3. Key in the user name and password . Click Apply . NO TES: • The PPP oE Internet connection typ e is used in this setup case . The setup screen v aries with different Internet connection types. • Obtain the required information such as the user name and password from y our Internet Ser vice Pr ovider (ISP).
17 4. The Internet connection setup is completed . • Click G oing to In ternet to sur f the Internet. • Click Simple Wireless Security Setup to configure the basic security settings including the SSID , authentication, and encr yption methods for the ADSL r outer .

19 3 C onfiguring via the web GUI Logging int o the web GUI Y our ASUS ADSL router comes with an in tuitive web graphics user interface (GUI) that allows you to easily c onfigure its various featur es through a web browser such as Int er net Explorer , F irefo x, Safari, or Google Chrome.

21 Using Wi-Fi P rotected Setup ( WPS) WPS ( Wi-F i Protected Setup) allows you t o set up a secure and protected wireless network easily NO TES: • Ensure that you use a wir eless LAN adapter with WPS function on your network clients .
22 T o use WPS: 1. In the WPS field, click the red button to launch the WPS Push Button Configur ation. NO TE: Y ou may also press the WPS button on your ADSL router to launch the WPS Push Button Configuration. 2. F ollow the onscreen instructions to complete the wireless network setup .
23 Setting up the wireless security settings T o protect your wireless network from unauthorized acc ess, you need to configure its security settings. T o set up the wireless security settings: 1. Key in 192.168.1.1 on your web bro wser . 2. On the login screen, key in the default user name ( admin ) and password ( admin ), then click OK .
24 5GHz security settings 4. On the Wireless name (SSID) field , key in a unique name for your wireless netw or k. 5. Fr om the S ecurity Le vel dropdown list , selec t the encr yption method for y our wireless network. IMPORT ANT ! The IEEE 802.11n standard prohibits using High Throughput with WEP or WP A-TKIP as the unicast cipher .
25 Managing your netw ork clients T o manage y our net w ork clients: 1. Launch the ADSL router ’ s web GUI. 2. On the Network Map screen, select the Client Status icon to display the inf or mation about y our network clients. 4. T o block a client ’ s access to y our network, selec t the client and click block .
26 NO TE: T o use this feature , you need t o plug a USB storage device , such as a USB hard disk or USB flash drive , to the USB 2.0 por t on the rear panel of y our ADSL router . Ensure that the USB storage device is f ormatted and par titioned properly .
27 3. On the Media Ser v er field, click GO to allow UP nP (Universal Plug and Pla y) devices such as PS3 to access the multimedia files in your USB disk. NO TE: F or more details, refer t o the nex t section Using your router as a UPnP Media Server in this user manual.
28 Using A iDisk for an FTP ser v er and Network Neighborhood setup AiDisk allows you t o set up an FTP ser ver and share the cont ent of a USB disk to the clients in your netw ork. NO TE: Before using AiDisk, ensure that y ou have inserted a USB disk into the USB port of your ADSL router .
29 3. Selec t the access rights that y ou want to assign to the clients accessing your shar ed data. 4. T o create your o wn domain for your FTP site via the ASUS DDNS ser vices , selec t I will use the service and accept the T erms of service and key in your domain name.
30 Using y our router as a UP nP M edia Ser v er Y our ADSL router allo ws UPnP (Universal Plug and P lay) multimedia devices , such as PS3 and XB o x 360, to access multimedia files from the USB disk connected to y our ADSL router . NO TE: Before using the UP nP Media S erver function, install a wireless adapter on your UP nP device.
31 Managing EZ QoS Bandwidth EzQoS Bandwidth Management allows you to set the bandwidth priority and manage the net w or k traffic . Setting up the bandwidth priority T o set up the bandwidth priority: 1. Click EzQoS Bandwidth Management from the navigation menu at the left side of your screen.
32 2. Click each of these four applications to set the bandwidth priority : Icon Description Gaming Blaster The router handles gaming traffic a t first pr iority . Internet Application The router handles the e-mail, web browsing and other Int er net applications traffic at first priority .
33 Monitoring the network tr affic The T raffic Monitor page allows you to assess the bandwidth usage and speed of your Internet , L AN, Wired , WLAN (2.4GHz or 5GHz) connections. T o monitor the netw ork traffic: 1. Click EzQoS Bandwidth Management > T raffic Monitor tab .
34 C onfiguring the Adv anced settings Adv anced Setting allows you to configur e the advanced featur es of your ADSL rout er . Setting up the DHCP Ser ver Y ou may enable the DHCP Server function in your ADSL router so your network clients can automa tically obtain IP addresses from your ADSL rout er .
35 3. In the Enable the DHCP Ser ver? field , tick Y es . 4. In the IP Pool Starting Address field , key in the star ting IP address. 5. In the IP Pool Ending A ddress field, k ey in the ending IP address.
36 T o upgrade the firmw are: 1. Click Adv anced Setting from the navigation menu at the left side of your screen. 2. Under the Administra tion menu, click Firmw are Upgrade . 3. In the New F irmware File field , click Brow se to locate the new firmware on your c omputer .
37 Restoring/Saving/U ploading settings T o rest ore/sav e/upload the settings: 1. Click Adv anced Setting from the navigation menu at the left side of your screen.
38 Sharing files from a USB stor age device Creating a user acc ount Y ou need to creat e user accounts before you can shar e the files or data in the USB storage devic e. T o crea te a user account: 1. Click Adv anced Setting > USB Application from the navigation menu a t the lef t side of your screen.
39 3. Fr om the list of file folders, select the type of access rights that you want t o assign for specific file folders: • R/W : Selec t this option to assign read/write access f or a specific file folder . • R : Selec t this option to assign read only access f or a specific file folder .
40 T o share files via the FTP server: 1. Ensure that you ha ve set up your FTP server through AiDisk. NO TE: F or more details, refer t o the sec tion Using AiDisk f or an FTP Ser v er and Network Neighborhood setup in this user manual. 2. Enable the DDNS ser vice for FTP server access.
41 Setting up your networ k printer Use the Network P rinter Setup utilit y to set up a USB printer on your ADSL rout er and allow network clients to access the USB printer . NO TES: • T o check if your USB printer is compatible with y our ASUS ADSL router , refer to the Plug-n-Shar e Disk Suppor t List at http://ev ent.
42 2. F ollow the onscreen instructions to set up your hardware , then click Next . 3. W ait for a few minutes f or the initial setup to finish. Click Next .

45 4 U sing the utilities NO TES: • Install the ADSL router's utilities from the bundled support CD . • If Autorun is disabled , run setup .exe from the r oot direc tory of the suppor t CD .
46 F irmware Restor ation F irmware Restoration is used on an ASUS ADSL router that failed during its firmware upgrading process . I t uploads the firmware that you specify . The process takes about three to f our minutes. T olaunchtherescuemodeandusetheFirmware Restoration utility: 1.
47 NO TE : This is not a firmware upgrade utility and cannot be used on a working ASUS ADSL router . Normal firmware upgrades must be done through the web in ter face. Refer to Chapter 3: C onfiguring via the web GUI for more details . 5. Specify a firmware file, then click Upload .
48 3. Key in the ADSL router ’ s default user name admin and password admin , then click Next . 4. W ait for a few minutes until y our ADSL router finishes detecting your Internet c onnec tion type.

52 Cannot find the rout er: • Press the Reset butt on at the rear panel for more than fiv e seconds. • Check the setting in the wireless adapter such as SSID and encr yption settings. • Check if the wireless indicator on the fr ont panel is off.
