T oner Containe r Replaceme nt 3-4 4 T ake the new toner container from the bag. Hold i t with the protective seal (o range-colored) facing u p. Shake the toner container horizon tally at least 5 time s. This ensures t hat the toner i s evenly distributed i nside.
T one r Containe r Replacem ent 3-5 7 While pushing down on the toner container , push lock lever #1 to the lock ( LO C K ) posi tion. (L o ck lever #2 is automat ically lo cked.) • If the toner low in dication flashes or remains lit after installing the new toner container , take the toner container out once, shak e it well, then inst all again.
Clea ning 3-6 3.2 Cleaning T o avoid p rint qual ity proble ms, the in terior of the printer mu st be clean ed with every toner container replacement. Cleaning should be done from time to time to avoid print quality problems.
Cleanin g 3-7 Never stand the process unit on end. 3 Use the supplied wi per cloth to clean dus t and dirt away from the registration roller (met al). While cle aning, be care ful to avoid tou ching the tr ansfer roller (the black rolle r).
Clea ning 3-8 If the charger cl eaner knob is not restored to its home position (marked CLEANER HOME POSITION ), a black band will print along the lengt h of the page the next time you use the printer . 5 After c leaning is do ne, put the proce ss unit back in the printer .

5-1 Chapter 5 P aper Selection 5 This chapter explains the following topics: • • • • Ge neral G uidel ines General Guideline s General Guideline s General Guideline s • • • • Sel ect i.
Gen eral Guid elines 5-2 5.1 General Guidelines The printer i s designed to print on high-quality co pier bond paper ( the kind used in ordinary dry copier machines), but it can also accept a va riety of other typ es of paper w ithin the limits spec ified belo w .
Selecting the Right Paper 5-3 5.2 Selecting the Rig ht P aper Laser prin ting is a process i nvolving las er light, electrostat ic discharg e, toner , and heat . In addition, as th e paper passes throu gh the printe r it undergoes cons iderable slidin g, bending, and twisti ng motions.
Sele cting the Right Paper 5-4 Pa pe r S i z e Casset tes an d an MP t ray are avai lable fo r the pap er sizes listed in Ta b l e 5 . 2 Ta b l e 5 . 2 Ta b l e 5 . 2 Ta b l e 5 . 2 . The dimensi onal tolerance s are ±0.7 mm (± 0.0276 inche s) for the length and width.
Selecting the Right Paper 5-5 Thickness (C aliper) Thick paper is referred to as high-caliper paper and thin paper as low- caliper paper . The paper used with the pri nter should be neithe r extremely thick nor extre mely thin.
Sele cting the Right Paper 5-6 Othe r Paper Prop ertie s Porosi ty: Porosi ty: Porosity: Porosity: Refers to the density of the p aper structure; that is, to how openly or compactl y the fibe rs are bonded. Stiffne ss: Stiffne ss: Stiffness : Stiffness : Limp pape r can buckle insi de the printe r , while paper that i s too stiff may b ind.
Speci al Paper 5-7 5.3 Special P aper The fo llowing types of special pa per can be used: • Transparency (overhead proj ection film) • Adhesive-back ed label paper • Envelopes • Colored pa per • Preprinted paper • Recycled paper Use paper t hat is sold specifical ly for use wi th copiers (h eat-fusing type).
Special P aper 5-8 5.3.2 Adhesive- Back ed Labels The b asic rule for pr inting on adhes ive labels is that the adhesive must never come into contact with any part of the printer . Adhesive paper stick ing to the drum o r rollers will d amage th e printe r .
Speci al Paper 5-9 Ta b l e 5 . 4 Ta b l e 5 . 4 Ta b l e 5 . 4 Ta b l e 5 . 4 lists the specifica tions for ad hesive la bel pap er . T able 5 .4 Adhesiv e Label S pecificat ions Envelopes The printer can p rint o n envelo pes usin g paper wi th a bas is weight of 60 to 79 g/m 2 (16 to 21 lb/ream).
Special P aper 5-10 Recycled P aper Select recycled paper t hat meets the sa me specifications as the white bond paper (see T abl e 5.1 T abl e 5.1 T able 5 .1 T abl e 5.1 on page 5-2 5-2 5-2 5-2 ) except whi teness. Before purchasi ng recycled paper , test a sample on the printer and check that the printing quality is satisfac tory .
Paper T ype 5-11 5.4 P aper Type The prin ter is capabl e of printi ng under the opti mum setting for the type of paper being us ed. Setting the paper type for the paper source by using the Remote Oper ation Pa n e l utility will cause the printer to automatically select the paper source and print in t he mode best suite d to that type of pa per .
