For your safety Read these simple guidelines. Not foll owing them may be dangerous or illegal. Read the complete user guide for further inform ation. SWITCH ON SAFELY Do not switch the device on when wireless phone use is prohibited or when it may cause interference or danger.
EMERGENCY CALLS Ensure the phone function of the device is s w i t c h e d o n a n d i n s e r v ice. Press the end key as many times as needed to clear the displa y and return to the standby mode. Enter the emergency number, then press the call key. Give your location.
For availability of appr oved enhancements, please check with your dealer. When you disconnect the power cord of any enhancement, grasp and pull the plug, not the cord. Your device and its enhancement s may contain sma ll parts. Keep them out of reach of small children.
Get started Note: Your service provide r may have requested that certai n features be d isabled or n ot activated in your device. If so, th ey do not a ppear on your devi ce menu. Your device may also have been specially configured for your netwo rk provider.
3. Ensure that the bevel ed corner of the SIM card is pointing towards the b ottom of the device and that the contact area on the card is fa cing the device, then insert the SIM ca rd (1) into the SIM card slot (2).
3. Replace the battery cover. 4. To remove the memory card, rem ove the battery cover and push the mem ory card into the device to activate the release mech anism. Then, gently pull the card out of your device. Important: Do n ot remove the memory card in the middl e of an operatio n when the card is being accessed.

To scroll through a list of accented characters, press and hold the Chr key , then press the ot her key as many ti mes as you need to get the accented char acter you want.
You can also lock the device in the standby mode using your lock code. Press the power key, select Lock phone , and enter your lock code. The default lock code is 12345. To unlock, press the lef t selection key, enter your lock code, and press the joystick.
The picture shows the normal use of the device at the ear for voice calls. Volume control Warning: Do not hold the device near your ear when the loudspeaker is in use, because the volume may be extremely lo ud. To adjust the volume duri ng a cal l, press the volume keys.
To open Services and connect to the Web, press 0 . Standby mode In the standby mode, you ca n see different information, such as your service prov ider, time, and dif ferent indicators , such as indicators for alar ms. In the standby mode, you can use the following shortcuts.

You can see how much memo ry is currently in use, ho w much free memory remai ns, and how much memory is consumed by each data type . For example, you can see how much memor y your e-mail messag es, text documents, or calendar appointments consume.

To remove th e memory ca rd password, select Optio ns > Remove password . When you remove the password, the data on th e memory card is not protected against unauthorized use.

Your device When you switch the device on, it may r ecognize t he SIM card provider and configure the correct text message, multimedia message, and GPRS settings automati cally. You may also receive the set tings as a special text message from your service provider.

Common actions in several applications You can find t he following actio ns in several applications: To switch between open ap plications, press and hold the menu key to see a list of open appli cations. Select an application. To change the profile or swi tch off or lock the device, press the power key briefly.
Transfer content between devices You can transfer cont ent, such as contacts, from a compatible Nokia device to your Nokia E61 using Bluetooth connectivity or infra red.
The necessary steps for data trans fer may va ry depending on your device, and whether you have interrupted data transfer earl ier. The items that yo u can transfer vary depen ding on the other device.
Messages Select Menu > Messag. . Before sending or receiving messages, you may need to do the following: • Insert a valid SIM card in the devi ce and be lo cated in a service area of the cellular network. • Verify that t he network suppor ts the messagin g features you want to us e and t hat they are activ ated on your SIM card.
Other settings Select Menu > Messag. > Options > Settings > Othe r . Select from the followi ng: • Save sent messa ges — Select whether to store sent messages in the Sent folder. • No. of saved msg s. — Enter the number of sent messages that yo u want to save.
Depending on your mobile operator , you might have to use you r mobile operator 's outgoing mail server instead of your e-mail provider's. 6. In Access point , select the Internet access point your device should use when it retrieves the e-mails.

Text message settings Select Options > Settings > Text message . Define the following: • Message centres — View the available message centers for your device.
Multimedia messages A multimedia message (MMS) can contain text and objects such a s images, sound clip s, or video clips. Note: Only devices that have compatible features can receive and display mu ltimedia messages. The appearance of a message may va ry depending on the receiving device.
3. Scroll to a text area and enter the tex t. 4. To insert images, sound, video, or notes in your presentation, scroll to the c orresponding object area, and select Options > Insert . Tip: To move between object areas, scroll up and down. 5. To add slides, select Insert > New slide .
To pause the presentation, press either selection key below the display. After you pause the pr esenta tion or playi ng finishes , select Options and from the fo llowing: • Open link — Open a Web link and bro wse the Web page. • Activate scrolling — Scroll text or images too large to fit on the display.

Conversations with a single I M user The Conversations view shows a list of the individual conversation participants with wh om you have an ongoing conversation. Ongoing conversations are automatica lly closed when you exit IM. To view a conversation, s croll to a participant, and pres s the joystick.
• Enter user ID — Enter the ID of the IM user. To allow a banned user to join the group, select Options > Remove . IM contacts When login to an I M service is compl ete, your conta ct list for the service provider is retriev ed automati cally.
• Allow messages from — Select to receive instant messages from all other IM users, your IM con tacts only, or not to receive messages at all. • Allow invitations from — Select to receive invitations to IM grou ps from all IM users, your IM contacts only, or not to receive invitations at all.
Make calls When the device is locked , ca lls sti ll may be possibl e to the official emergency number progra mmed into your device. In the offline profile, you may need to enter the l o ck code and change the device to a calli ng profile before making any call, including a call to an emergency number.
Answer a call Note: The actual invo ice for calls and services from your s ervice prov ider may vary, depend ing on network features, rounding o ff for billing, taxes, and so forth . To answer a call, press the call key. To reject the call, press the end key.
To bar calls, select Cellular call barring and select from the following options: • Outgoing calls — Prevent making voice calls wi th your device. • Incoming calls — Bar incom ing calls. • International calls — Prevent calling to foreign countries or regions.
To sort the events by type or direc tion, scroll right to open the general log, and select Options > Filter . Scro ll to a filter type, an d press th e joystick.

Contacts view To view, add, modify, dele te, or call contacts, select Options > PTT contacts . A list of names from your device Contacts applica tion is dis played w ith info rmation about thei r login stat us. To call a selected contact, select Options > Talk 1 to 1 .
Exit push to talk Select Options > Exi t . Select Yes to log out and close the service. Press No if you want to keep the application active on the background. Net calls With the net call service (netwo rk service), you can make and receive c alls over the Internet.
3. Select Back until you return to the main menu. Tip: You can also use manual lo gin to the net call service. Use the same settings instructions as with automatic login, but ensure that Registr ation is se t to When needed and Transport type is set to UDP or TCP .

Make net calls If you set Internet call as the preferred call type, and your device is co nnected to a net call service, calls are made as net calls a s default.
The device creates a voice tag for the entries in the contacts list and for the f unctions designated in the Voice cm. applicatio n. When a voice command is spoken, the device compares the spoken words to the voice tag in the device. Make a call The voice tag for a contact is the name o r nickname that is saved on the contact card in Contacts .
Contacts Select Menu > Contacts . Manage all of your contact infor mation, such as phone numbers and ad dresses. Add a personal ringing to ne, voice tag, or a thumbnail image t o a contact.
Manage default information Assign a default number or ad dress to a contact so you can easily call or send a message to the default number or address, even if severa l numbers or addresses are saved to tha t contact. To change default informatio n for a contact, open the contact, and select Options > Defaults .
text message , Via multimedia , Via e-mail , Via Bluetooth , or Via infrar ed . Enter the phone number or address, or add a recipient fr om the contacts list. Select Options > Send . If you select SMS as the sending method, contact cards are sent without images.
Calendar Select Menu > Organiser > Calendar . In Calendar , you can create and view scheduled events and appointments. You can al so set alarms for calendar entries. You can synchronize your calendar data with a compatible computer using Nok ia PC Suite.
Calendar views To switch between the different calendar views, select Options in any calendar view. S elect a type of view from the list. To set the default calendar view, select Options > Settings > Default view > Month view , Week view , Da y view , or To-do view .
Clock Select Menu > Clock . To change the clock type, select Op tions > Settings > Clock type > Analogue or Digital . Date and time settings To change the date and ti me, their display for.
Connectivity Copyright prot ections may preve nt some imag es, music (including ringing tones), a nd other content from being copied, modified, transf erred or forwarded. Your device offers sev eral optio ns to connect to the Internet, a corporate intranet , or to anoth er device or PC.
3. Define the following settings. • Connection name — Enter a descriptive name for the connection. • Data beare r — Select Packet data . • Access point n a me — Enter the name for t he access point. The name is usu ally provided by your service prov ider or networ k operator.

Bluetooth There may be restrictions on using Bluetooth technology in some locations. Check with your local authorities or service provider. Features using Bluet ooth technology, o r allowing such features to run in the background while using other features, increase the dema nd o n battery power and reduces the battery life.

1. Select Options > New pa ired device . The device starts to search for Blue tooth devices within range. Tip: If you have sent data using Bluetooth before, a list of the pr evious search results is displayed. To sea rch for more B luetooth devices, select More devices .
With the SIM access profile, you can access the SIM card of your device from a compatible car kit device. This way, you do not need a separate SIM card to access SIM card data an d connect to the GSM net work.
2. Select Menu > Connect. > Infrared , and press the joystick to turn on in frared on you r device. Turn on infrared on the other device. 3. Wait a few seco nds until an infrared connection is established. 4. To send, locate the desired file in an application or the file manager, and select Options > Send > Via infrared .

Wireless local area network (WLAN) Some places, like France, have restrictions on the use of wireless LAN. Check with your local authoriti es for more informatio n.
View and end active connections Note: The actual time invoiced for calls by your service provider may vary, depending on network features, rounding off for billing, and so forth. In the active connections view, you can see the open data connections: data calls, packet data connections, and wireless LAN connections.
Mobile VPN Select Menu > Tools > Settings > Connection > VPN . The Nokia mobile virtual private network (VPN) cli ent creates a secure connection to compatib le corporate Intranet and services, such as e-mai l.
Web Select Menu > Web (network service). Web is one of the two browsers in your device. Wi th Web , you can browse regular Web sites. These pages use the extensible hypertext markup language (XHTML) or hypertext mar kup language (HTML). If you want to browse WAP pages, use Menu > Media > Services .
• Press 8 to open page overview. • Press 9 to go to a different Web page. Bookmarks Your device may have some bookmarks loaded for sites not affiliated with Nokia. N okia does not wa rrant or endorse these sites. If you choose to ac cess them, you should take the s ame precautions , for security or content, as you would with any Internet site.
Disconnect ; or to end the conn ection and close the browser, se lect Options > Exit . Clear the cache A cache is a memory location that is used to store data temporarily. If yo u have tried to access or have accessed confidential info rmation req uiring password s, empty the cache after each use.
(for example, to retain the i tems you buy until you reach the cashier page). Howe ver, the information may be misused (for example, you may receive unwanted advertisements in your device).
Office applications Select Menu > Office . Some office appl ications are not available in all languages. Opening a large file may not be possible or it may take a while. Note that in addition to the Documents, Sheet, and Presentation applications , you can also download the Quickoffice application from Nokia Catalogs.
To open an image or go to a hyperlink or reference, scroll to the object, and press the joystick three times. Edit documents To be abl e to edit a do cument, you must acti vate the edit mode: select the middle view and Options > Edit document . Select Options > Format , and the appropriat e formattin g opti on.
Find text To find a piece of text fr om the document, select Options > Find , ent er the text in the Find: field, and press the joystick. To change search opt ions su ch as case sensitivity and search direction, select Opt ions > Sear ch options .
Work with cells To insert cells, sel ect the area where you want to insert new cells and Option s > Cells > Insert . You ca n insert cells above ( Shift cells down ) or to the left ( Shift cells right ) of the selected range. If you select only one cell, only one new c ell is inserte d.
To create a new presentation, select Options > New file . Select Blank to create a new p resentation w ithout using a template or Use template to create a presentation based on an existing template. View slide shows To start a slide show, select Options > Presentation .

2. Scroll to the first Un it field, and select Options > Change currency . Select the unit from which you want to convert, and select OK . Scroll to the next Unit field, and select the unit to whi ch you want to convert. 3. Scroll to the first Amount field, and enter the value you want to co nvert.
Data and software management Application manager Select Menu > Tools > App. mgr. . When you open the applicat ion manager, y ou see all the software packages that have been installed , with their name, version number, type, and size.
The available applicatio ns you can synchronize may vary. Contact your service provider for more informatio n. Tip: You may receiv e the synchronization settings as a messag e from your service provider.
Tools Select Menu > Tools . The Tools folder con tains applications used t o configure your device and to con figure other applications . App. mgr. —See "Application manager," p . 84. Memory card —See "Memory card," p. 2 0. Transfer —See "Transfer content between devices," p.
The voice aid application reads text on the screen, allowing you to use basic funct ions of your device without looking at the dis play. Select from the followi ng: • Contacts — Hear the entries in your contacts lis t. Do not use thi s option if yo u have more tha n 500 contacts.
Media applications Copyright prot ections may preve nt some imag es, music (including ringing tones), a nd other content from being copied, modified, transf erred or forwarded. Select Menu > Media . Media contains differ ent media applications that allow you to save and view images, r ecord sounds, and play sound clips.
To view the image in fu ll screen size, select Options > Full screen or press 7 twice. To return t o normal view, select Options > Normal screen . To rotate an image, select an image, and Options > Rotate . Select Right to rotate the ima ge clockwise by 90 degrees, or select Left to rotate the image counterclockwise by 90 degrees.
To fast-for ward or rewind the cli p during play back, scroll up or dow n. To increase or decrease the volume during playback, press the volume keys. Settings Select Menu > Media > RealPlayer > Options > Settings . Video settings Select Loop > On , if you want to replay video clip s automati cally after they finis h playin g.
With the music player, you can play music files and create and listen to track lists. The music player supports files with extensions such as MP3 and AAC. Listen to music Warning: Listen to music at a moderate level. Continuous expo sure to high vo lume may da mage your hearing.
To use a preset frequency setting when playing music, scroll to the frequency setting you want to use, and select Options > Activate . Create your own frequency setting 1. To create your own frequency setting, select Options > New preset . 2. Enter a name for the preset frequency setting, and select OK .
Personalization Profiles Warning: In the offline profile you cannot make or receive any calls, including eme rgency calls, or use other features that requi re network coverage. To make calls, you must first activate the pho ne function by changing profiles.

Settings Select Menu > Tools > Settings . You can define and modify var ious settings of your device. Modifying these setti ngs affects the operation of your device across several applicatio ns. Some settings may be preset for the device or sent to you in a configuration mess age by your network operator or service prov ider.

Access point groups Select Menu > Tools > Settings > Connection > Access point groups . An access point group is used for grouping and prioritizing access p oints. An applicat ion can use a group as a connection method instead of a single acces s point.
VPN VPN access points To manage VPN access points, selec t VPN > VPN access points > Options , and from the following: • Edit — Edit the selected access poin t. If the access point is in use or its settings are protected, you cannot edit it.
• Power saving — Select whet her to save the po wer in the device battery. To restore all settings to their original values, select Options > Restore defaults . Security settings for wireless LAN access points Select Menu > Tools > Settings > Connection > Access points .
EAP To view the EAP (extensib le authenticati on protocol) plug-ins currently installed in your device (netwo rk service), select Menu > Tools > Settings > Connection > Access points . Select Options > New access point and define an access point th at uses wirel ess LAN as a da ta bearer and 80 2.
With most enhancements, you can select fr om the following settings: • Default profile — Select the profile that is activated when you attach an enhancement to yo ur device. • Automatic answer — Let the device answer pho ne calls automatically wh en an enhancement is attached.
Security Device security Select Menu > Tools > Settings > Security > Ph one and SIM . You can modify the security se ttings for the PIN code, automatic lock, and SIM car d change, a nd change co des and passwords. Avoid using codes that are similar to emergency numbers to prevent accidental dialing of the emergency number.
• Lock if SIM changed — Set the device to ask for the lock code when an unk nown, new SIM card is inserted int o your dev ice. The device maintains a lis t of SIM cards that are recognized as the owner’s cards.
Certificate manager Important: Note that even if the use of certificates makes the risks involved in remote connections and software installation considerably sm a l l er , t h e y m u s t b e u s e d c or r e c t ly i n o r de r t o be n e f i t from increased security.
Shortcuts Here are some of the avai lable keyboard shortcuts in your device. Shortcuts can m ake the use of the applications more efficient. Battery information Your device is powered by a rechargeab le battery. The full perfor mance of a new ba ttery is achiev ed only after two or three complete charge and discharge cycles. The battery can be charged an d discha rged hundreds of times, but it will eventually wear out.
