[ 3 ] Welcome 1. W elcome Congratulations on your purchase of a Nokia 8890 mobile phone. Y ou are now on your way to usin g a new and exciting tool. However , bef ore you use your phone, read this chapter . It provides information you n eed for using this guide a nd for contacting Nokia.

[ 7 ] Welcome • Network services A number of features known as network services are described in this guide. These are special services to which your wireless service provider can give you a ccess.
[ 8 ] • Contacting Nokia The Nokia Customer Ser vice department is available to provide you with help or more information. Before you contact this department, however , please have the f ollowing information available: To find the model and serial number , you have to r emove the battery .
[ 9 ] Before you begin 2. Before you begin Before you begin u sing your phone, you need to per form several tasks. This section tells you how to complete these tasks.
[ 1 0 ] Notes about SIM cards • Keep all miniature SIM cards out of the reach of small children. • The SIM card and its contacts are easily damaged by scratches or bending, so be careful when handling, inserting, or removing the card. • Y ou must remove the battery to access the SIM card.
[ 1 1 ] Before you begin Note: If the battery is completely empty , it might take a fe w minutes before the battery bar appears on the screen. Tip: Y ou can use th e phone wh ile it’s charging. 3 When the battery bar stops s crolling, the battery charge is complete.
[ 12 ] 3. About your phone • Switch on your phone • Pre ss an d hold for mor e than a se cond . The phone might ask for a P ersonal Identification (PIN) code or a security code.
[ 13 ] About your phone • About the St art screen When you tu rn on you r phone, th e first screen that appears is the Star t screen. In the middle of the Start screen, you see information indicating which wireless network your phone uses. This in formation can vary between phones.
[ 14 ] Ico ns Icons are graphical representations of a specific item or situation . For example, this icon appears when you ha ve a voice message waiting to be heard. (Some systems use a different method.) The rest of this section shows examples of each icon that can appear on your phone and tel ls you what these icons indicate.
[ 15 ] About your phone Characters entere d will be n umbers. (When e ntering let ters, swi tch to numbers by pressing and holding . ) Y ou are in “special character” mode. Select a ch aracter , then press Use . (When entering letters, switch to special characters by pressing the key .
[ 16 ] 4. Making and answering calls This chapter tells y ou how to make and receive calls a nd how to adjust certain options. • Make a call The Noki a 8890 ha s both a fi xed, inte rnal an tenn a and a retr act able antenna.
[ 17 ] Making and answering calls Tip: As with any other radio t ransmitting device, do not touch th e antenna when the phon e is switched on . Contact with the antenn a affects call quality and may cause the phone to operate at a higher power level than otherwise needed.
[ 18 ] • To close the cover without ending a call, press Opt ions before you c lose the cover . When you close the sliding cover , this screen appears. •P r e s s , , , or to answer , end, or reject calls. Note: When you connect the phone to a headset or a car kit, you can still use the cover to answer calls .
[ 19 ] Making and answering calls •E n d a c a l l • Press or close the sli ding cover . • Answer a call When someone calls you, the phone alerts you (see “Ringing options” on page 60) and Call flashes on the display . • To answer , press any key except Decl ine or , or open the sliding cover .
[ 20 ] 5. The menu Y our ph one offers an exten sive range of functions that are grouped in menus and submenus. Access these menus with the selection keys and scroll keys, or by e ntering the appropriate shortcut n umber . • Using the menus Selection keys Below the screen, you will find two selection keys.
[ 2 1 ] The menu Scroll b ar While using your phone’s menus, a scroll bar appears at the far right of the screen. This bar indicates where you are in the menu. Ea ch numbered “t ab” on the bar represents a different menu item . For example, press Menu once.

[ 26 ] 6. Entering letters and numbers Y ou can enter letters and numbe rs into your phone for a person’s name and phone number , wr iting a text message, and so on.
[ 27 ] Entering letters and numbers Depending on the selected display language, the following characters may be available. Note: Some networks may not support all language-dependent characters . Enter spaces and punctuation • To enter a space, press once.
[ 28 ] 123 mode To enter nu mbe rs, yo u can: • Press and hold and switch to 123 mode. Y our phone displays the icon. Press the appropriate number key to e nter a number . OR • While in ABC mode, press and hold the corresponding number key until the number appears.
[ 29 ] Phone book 7. Phone book Use the phone book to store names and phone numbers. • A phone book en try can consist of a number only , or a name and number . • A name may appear only once in the phone book. If you try to save a name that already exists in the phone book, the phone asks if you want to replace the existing name.
[ 30 ] 4 Enter the n ame, then press OK . 5 Enter the ph one nu mber , then press OK . If your phone bo ok is full If your phone book is f ull, you can save the phone number to another memory or replace an existing entry . • Scroll to the entry you wan t to replace, then press OK .
[ 3 1 ] Phone book • Edit (revise) names and numbers At the Start screen: 1 Recall the stor ed name, pr ess Detai ls , then press Opt ions . 2 Scroll to Ed it , then pres s Selec t . 3 Edit the name, then press OK . 4 Ed it th e numb er , th en pr ess OK .
[ 32 ] • T wo types of m emory Y our phone has both phone memory and SIM card memory . Y ou can save names and numbers in either memory . The internal phone memory can store up to 250 names and nu mbers . The amo unt of na mes an d numb ers you can store in SIM card memory is depe ndent on SIM card capacity .
[ 33 ] Phone book Look up dialed calls Y our phone saves the last 1 0 numbers you’ve dialed. 1 Press Menu 2 3 . 2 Scroll to the number you want to see information about. 3 To dial the number , press ; for other options, press Optio ns (see “Options in call lists” on page 34).

[ 35 ] V oice mail++ 8. V oice mail ++ V oice mail is a network feature that e nables those who call you to leave a voice messa ge. Note: Y ou can u se voice mail w ith either one or two phone line s. When you receive a voice message, your phone le ts you know by beeping, displaying an icon on the screen, or showing a text m essage.
[ 36 ] • Save the voice mailbox nu mber 1 Press Menu 1 9 2. 2 Enter your voice mailbox number , then press OK . Note: The number can be u p to 32 digits long. W ork with two phone lines If your particular SIM card supports it, your phone can have two phone lines.
[ 37 ] Profiles 9. Profiles The profiles feature lets y ou adjust and customize the ph one’s ringing tones for di ffer ent events, en vironments, a nd caller gr oups. Th ere are five profiles available: •N o r m a l • Silent •M e e t i n g • Outdoor •P a g e r Normal is the default setting, but it is easy to switch to another profile.
[ 38 ] 1 0. Advanced calling features • Active call option s Use call wai ting ++ This network service lets you receive an incoming call when you’re already in a call. (Contact your service provider for availability .) The phone beeps to let you k now of the incoming call.
[ 39 ] Advanced calling features Reject a wait ing call Y ou can just let the phone ring, or follow th e steps below . •P r e s s Decl ine , OR 1 Press Opt ions and scroll to Reject . 2 Press Sele ct . Swit ch bet ween c alls •P r e s s o r Swap .

Y our ch oices are: Put a call on hold 1 To put a call on hold, press Hol d . 2 To retu rn to the call, press Unhold . Make a new call 1 Enter the second phone number , or recall it from the phone book.
[ 4 1 ] Advanced calling features 3 Enter the second phone number , or recall it from the phone book. 4 Press Call . With either method, the first call is automatically put on hold. Switch betwee n two calls in progress •P r e s s o r Swap . The icon represents the active call an d the icon represents the call on hold.
[ 42 ] Store touch tone strings the same w ay you save phone numbers (see “ Save names and number s” on page 29). For fr equent ly us ed str ings o f num bers , you can save an entire sequence of digits in you r phone book and send it as a touch tone string.
[ 43 ] Advanced calling features 3 To unmute the microphone, p ress Unmute . Muting and unmuting also affects the microphones of any accessories connected to the phone. Conference calls ++ This network service allows you t o make conference calls with your phone.
[ 44 ] 3 Scroll to the person you want to drop, then press OK . The other participants can continue talking with each other . 4 Press Opt ions . 5 Scroll to End acti ve call , then press Select . T ransfer a call ++ When you have one active an d one held call, you can connect th e two calls and disconnect yourself from the call.
[ 45 ] Advanced calling features Activate call forwarding 1 Press Menu 5. Scroll to one of th e following options: 51 Forward al l voice cal ls Forwards all voice calls without ringing.
[ 46 ] Note: Canceling all call forwarding may also cancel any automatic forwarding of calls to voice mail that your service provider has activated for you. Also, this option may cancel your call forwarding service. Contact your service prov ider for details.
[ 47 ] Advanced calling features Save ca lling card in formation 1 Press Menu 4 4 2. 2 Scroll to the calling ca rd information you want to change, then press Options . 3 Scroll to Ed it , then pres s OK . 4 Enter your secu rity code, then press OK . 5 At Dialing s equence , press Select .
[ 48 ] Choose a calling card 1 Press Menu 4 4 2. 2 Scroll to the car d you want to use, then press Op tions . 3 Select is highlighted; press OK . 4 Enter your secu rity code, then press OK . Make a calling card call 1 Enter the phone number , including any prefix (such as 0 or 1) that your calling card may require.
[ 49 ] Advanced calling features 3 Press Sele ct . The phone displays Press Start, then speak af ter tone . 4 Hold the phone up to your e ar and press Start . Y ou hear several beeps, and Please sp eak now appears. If you’re using the headset, release the but ton.
[ 50 ] Make a call u sing voice recognition 1 Hold the phone up to your ear , then press and hold Names . When you hear several beeps and Plea se speak now appears, release the button. Note: If you have the optional headset attached, press and hold the headset button, then when the phone beeps and Plea se sp eak now appears, release the button.
[ 5 1 ] Advanced calling features 5 Press Start . Note: Refer to “Notes about voice tags” on page 49. 6 The phone repeats your voice tag, and Voice tag saved appear s. Note: If you’re using the headset and the phone does not locate the number , you will hear an error tone and No match found ap pear s.
[ 52 ] Assign a number to a 1-touch dial key 1 Press Names and scroll to 1-touch diali ng . 2 Press Sele ct . 3 Scroll to the first number that shows the message (empty) an d press Assign . A list of n ames appears. 4 Scroll to the phone book entry you want to a ssign to this key , press OK , and Opt ions appears.
[ 53 ] Advanced calling features 3 Scroll to the key that you want to erase and press Op tions . 4 Scroll to Era se and press Select . 5 Press OK to confirm. • Make an internati onal call 1 Enter the + character (by pressing the key twice), country code, area code, and phone num ber .
[ 54 ] • Caller groups Y ou can create groups of names in your phone book and give each group a different ringing tone. When someone from that group calls, you’ll know because of the ringing tone. Add names to a cal ler group The name you add to a caller group must first be store d in the phone book.
[ 55 ] Advanced calling features Rename a caller group Y ou can rename any call gr oup with a name of your ow n. 1 Follow steps 1 through 3 in section “A ssign a ringing tone to a caller group” on page 54. 2 Scroll to Rename group and press Select .
[ 56 ] View a received graphic 1 When you receive a graphic from someone else, Group gr aphic received appears. 2 Press Opt ions and then choose Show to see the graphic, Save to save it (you must ch oose which caller group gets the new graphic), or Disca rd to discard it.
[ 57 ] Advanced calling features Show call timer during calls 1 Press Menu 2 5. 2 Scroll to Last call , then pr ess Det ails . Current call is displayed. 3 Press Sele ct . 4 Scroll to On , th en p ress OK . During a call, the amount of time spent in that call is displayed.
[ 58 ] • Show call costs ++ This network service allows you to check the cost of the last or current call, or the total cost of all calls that you have made or received sinc e the counters were last reset. To choose whether call costs are shown in charging units or in dollars, see "Sh ow costs in" on page 58.
[ 59 ] Customizing your phone 1 1. Customizing your phone • Profiles Profiles let you set your phone’s sound settings to whatever environment you find yourself in, whether it’s a meeting or a soccer game.
[ 60 ] Ringi ng options Choose how a profile notifies you of an incoming call. 1 Scroll to one of th e following, and press OK . Ring : The ph one rings. Ascendin g : T he ringing volume starts low and increases with successive rings. Ring once : The phone rings once.
[ 6 1 ] Customizing your phone Ringi ng volume This feature sets the ringing volume for incoming voice calls and message alert tones. 1 Press Menu 3. 2 Scroll to the profi le whose ringing volume you want to set, then press Options . 3 Scroll to Customize , then press OK .

[ 63 ] Customizing your phone Rename a profile 1 Press Menu 3. 2 Scroll to the profile you want to rename and pre ss Options . Note: Remember , you cannot re name the Normal, Car , or Headse t profiles. 3 Scroll to Rename and press OK . 4 Enter the new profile name, then press OK .
[ 64 ] Set up car profile If you are using your phone with an approved car kit, you can set ligh ts to On (lights stay on) or Automa tic (after 15 seconds, lights turn off until the next key is pressed, phone ring s, etc.). • Restore fa ctory settings Y ou ca n use Menu 4 5 7 to r eset some of th e phone settings to their original values.

[ 66 ] 12. Security features • Lock the keypad (K eyguard) The keypad lock (Keyguard) disables your keypad to prevent accidental key pr esses (for example, when your phone is in your pocket or purse). Note: K eyguard does not prevent unauthorized use of your phone.
[ 67 ] Security fe atures • PIN and PUK codes The following table summarizes how different types of security codes are used in your phone. PIN codes The PIN (P ersona l Identity Number) and PIN2 codes are 4- to 8-digit numb ers t hat us ually c ome fr om y our se rvice provid er al ong wi th th e SIM card.
[ 68 ] Change yo ur PIN or PIN2 code Y ou can change your PIN or PIN2 code to any 4- to 8-digi t number . 1 Press Menu 4 6 5, th en press Se lect . 2 Enter the current PIN code and press OK . 3 Enter the new PIN code and press OK . 4 Enter the new PIN code again to verify , and press OK .

[ 7 1 ] Security fe atures • Restricting calls ++ This is a network service that lets you restrict the calls your phone can make and receive. Ch eck with your se rvice provider for details.
[ 72 ] • Set up a closed user group ++ This network service specifies the gr oup of people to whom you can call and who can call you. Preset resets the phone to use a user group that the SIM card owner h as agreed upon with the ser vice provider .
[ 73 ] Select a system 13. Select a system Y ou can select how your phone ch ooses a wireless network, as there may be more than one available. The selection you make stays active until you change it or change the SIM card. 1 Press Menu 4 5 4. 2 Scroll to Autom atic or Manual , then press Select .
[ 74 ] 14. T ext messages ++ The text message network service allows you to send short text messages to other phones that have tex t message capability . You can also ask the service provider to con vert the message to other formats such as e-mail and fax.

[ 76 ] Predictive text input tools Select a langu age and turn on predi ctive text input 1 Press Menu , then pr ess Sele ct . - Use for word entry . Press each key only on ce for each letter . Press to view the next matching wor d if the underlined word is not the word you intended.
[ 77 ] Tex t messages++ 2 Scroll to Write messages , then pr ess Se lect . 3 Press Opt ions , scroll to Dictionar y , then pr ess OK . 4 Scroll to the language you want, then press OK .
[ 78 ] • To insert a symbol, press and hold . The symbol screen appears. Select the desired symbol a nd press Ins ert . 2 When you have f inished writing, check the underlined word to see if it is the word you intended to write. If the word is correct • Insert a punctuation mark, if needed.

Insert numbers 1 To add a number to the message, press and hold until app ears . 2 Key in the desired numbers, th en press and hold to return to ABC mode.
[ 80 ] 2 Enter a message of up to 1 60 characte rs. The number of available characters appears in the top right cor ner of the screen. 3 Once you have finished writing, pr ess Optio ns , scroll to Send , then press OK . 4 Enter or recall the r ecipient’s phone number , then press OK .

Delivery reports : Scroll to Ye s or No , then pre ss OK . Ye s me ans tha t the network tries to send delivery reports for the messages you send.
[ 85 ] Tex t messages++ 2 Scroll to Pi cture M essage s and press Select . 3 Scroll to the picture you want to send, then press View . The picture appears. T o choose a different picture, press Back , scroll to another picture, then press View . 4 Press Opt ions and scroll to Forw ard .
[ 86 ] Receive picture messages 1 When your phone displays Picture message received , press View and the message appears. 2 If the picture has a text message w ith it, scroll up or dow n to see the entire m essage. 3 Press Save to keep the picture message, or press Back and Exit to delete it.
[ 87 ] Y ou r personal digital assistant 15. Y our personal digital assistant • Calendar The calendar keeps track of reminders, calls you need to m ake, meetings, and birthdays. It can even soun d an alarm when it’s time for you t o make a call or go to a m eeting.
[ 88 ] View d ay not es This option allows you to view , erase, edit, move, and send notes m ade for the selected day . Use the sc roll keys to scroll through notes.
[ 89 ] Y ou r personal digital assistant Erase notes 1 Scroll to Era se not es and press Select . 2 Scroll to Of chosen day , One b y one , or All a t o nce , then pr ess OK . Of ch osen day : Displays each not e for the current day so yo u c an d ele te t he notes individually .
[ 90 ] View rece ived calendar notes Caution: If you pres s Ex it , the calen dar note will be deleted! 1 When your phone displays Calendar no te received , press Op tions . Show is sele cted. 2 Press OK . 3 Scroll through the note. Save re ceived c alendar not es 1 After viewing the calendar n ote, press Back .
[ 9 1 ] Y ou r personal digital assistant Manage the alarm Phone on •P r e s s Stop to shut off the alarm . OR •P r e s s Snooz e . The alarm stops an d sounds again in 5 minutes. Note: If you let the alarm sound for 1 minute without pressing a key , it stops for 5 minutes, and then sounds again.
