[ 3 ] Welcome 1. W elcome Congratulations on your purchase of a Nokia 8290 mobile phone. Y ou are now on your way to usin g a new and exciting tool. However , bef ore you use your phone, read this chapter . It provides information you n eed for using this guide a nd for contacting Nokia.

[ 7 ] Welcome • Network services A number of features known as network services are described in this guide. These are special services to which your wireless service provider can give you a ccess.
[ 8 ] • Contacting Nokia The Nokia Customer Ser vice department is available to provide you with help or more information. Before you contact this department, however , please have the f ollowing information available: To find the model and serial number , you have to remove the battery .
[ 9 ] Before you begin 2. Before you begin Before you begin using your phone, y ou need to perform several tasks. This section tells you h ow to complete these tasks.

Notes about SIM cards • Keep all miniature SIM cards out of the reach of small children. • The SIM card and its contacts are easily damaged by scratches or bending, so be careful when handling, inserting, or removing the card.
[ 1 1 ] Before you begin 2 Connect the charger to a standard wall outlet. The batter y power indicator (or batter y bar) appears on the screen and starts scrolling. If t he phone is on, Charging appear s also. Note: If the battery is completely empty , it might take a f ew minutes before the battery bar appears on the screen.
[ 12 ] 3. About your phone • Switch on your phone • Press and hold power for more than a seco nd. The phone might ask for a P e rsonal Identification (PIN) code or a security code.
[ 13 ] About your phone • About the St art screen When you tu rn on you r phone, th e first screen that appears is the Star t screen. In the middle of the Start screen, you see information indicating which wireless network your phone uses. This information can vary between phones.
[ 14 ] Ico ns Icons are graphical representations of a specific item or situation . For example, this icon appears when you have a voice message waiting to be heard. (Some systems u se a different method.) The rest of this section shows examples of each icon that can appear on your phone and tel ls you what these icons indicate.
[ 15 ] About your phone Characters entered w ill be lowercase lette rs. Press to switch letter case. Characters entere d will be n umbers. (When e ntering let ters, swi tch to numbers by pressing and holding .) Y ou are in “special character” mode.
[ 16 ] 4. Making and answering calls This chapter tells y ou how to make and receive calls a nd how to adjust certain options. • Make a call Check the signal strength The signal indicator on the left side of your phone’s screen shows the strength of the networ k radio signal.
[ 17 ] Making and answering calls Use the phone book 1 From the Start screen, press or and scroll to the number you want. 2 Press to make the call. Tip: To skip ahead quickly in the list, press the number key that matches the first letter of the name.
[ 18 ] Caller ID ++ This is a network service that helps identify incoming calls. Contact your service provider for details When Call er ID is act ive, your phone m ay displa y the cal ler’s phon e numb er .
[ 19 ] The menu 5. The menu Y our ph one offers an exten sive range of functions that are grouped in menus and submenus. Access these menus with the selection keys and scroll keys, or by e ntering the appropriate shortcut n umber . • Using the menus Selection keys Below the screen, you will find two selection keys.
[ 20 ] Scroll b ar While using your phone’s menus, a scroll bar appears at the far right of the screen. This bar indicates where you are in the menu. Ea ch numbered “t ab” on the bar represents a different menu item . For example, press Menu once.

[ 25 ] Entering letters and numbers 6. Entering letters and numbers Y ou can enter letters and numbers into your phone for a person’s n ame and phone number , writing a text message, and so on.
[ 26 ] Depending on the selected display language, the following characters may be available. Note: Some networks may not support all language-dependent characters . Enter spaces and punctuation • To enter a space, press once. • To enter punctuation, press repeatedly un til the character you want appears.
[ 27 ] Entering letters and numbers 123 mode To enter nu mbe rs, yo u can: • Press and hold and switch to 123 mode. You r phone displays the icon. Press the appropriate number ke y to enter a number . OR • While in ABC mode, press and hold the corresponding number key until the number appears.
[ 28 ] 7. Phone book Use the phone book to store names and phone numbers. • A phone book entry can consist of a number only , a name and number , or a name only . • Names are saved in the ph one book memory and/or SIM memory . I f you try to save a name th at already exists, the ph one asks if you w ant to replace the existing name.
[ 29 ] Phone book 4 Enter the n ame, then press OK . 5 Enter the ph one nu mber , then press OK . If your phone bo ok is full If your phone book is f ull, you can save the phone number to another memory or replace an existing entry . • Scroll to the entry you wan t to replace, then press OK .
[ 30 ] • Edit (revise) names and numbers At the Start screen: 1 Recall the stor ed name, pr ess Detai ls , then press Opt ions . 2 Scroll to Ed it , then pres s Selec t .
[ 3 1 ] Phone book • T wo types of m emory Y our phone has both phone memory and SIM card memory . Y ou can save names and numbers in either memory . The internal phone memory can store up to 250 names and nu mbers . The amo unt of na mes an d numb ers you can store in SIM card memory is depe ndent on SIM card capacity .
[ 32 ] Look up dialed calls Y our phone saves the last 1 0 numbers you’ve dialed. 1 Press Menu 2 3. 2 Scroll to the number you want to see information about. 3 To dial the number , press ; for other options, press Optio ns (see “Options in call lists” on page 33 ).
[ 33 ] Phone book 4 To exit, press Back . At any time 1 Press Menu 2 1. 2 Scroll to the number you want to see in formation about. 3 To dial the number , press .
[ 34 ] 8. V o ice mail ++ V oice mail is a network feature that e nables those who call you to leave a voice messa ge. Note: Y ou can u se voice mail w ith either one or two phone line s. When you receive a voice message, your phone le ts you know by beeping, displaying an icon on the screen, or showing a text m essage.
[ 35 ] V oice mail++ • Save the voice mailbox nu mber 1 Press Menu 1 9 2. 2 Enter your voice mailbox number , then press OK . Note: The number can be u p to 32 digits long. W ork with two phone lines If your particular SIM card supports it, your phone can have two phone lines.
[ 36 ] 9. Profiles The profiles feature lets y ou adjust and customize the ph one’s ringing tones for di ffer ent events, en vironments, a nd caller gr oups. Th ere are five profiles available: •N o r m a l • Silent •M e e t i n g • Outdoor •P a g e r Normal is the default setting, but it is easy to switch to another profile.
[ 37 ] Advanced calling features 1 0. Advanced calling features • Active call option s Use call wai ting ++ This network service lets you receive an incoming call when you’re already in a call. ( Contact your service provider for availability .) The phone beeps to let you k now of the incoming call.
[ 38 ] Reject a wait ing call Y ou can just let the phone ring, or follow th e steps below . •P r e s s Decl ine , OR 1 Press Opt ions and scroll to Reject. 2 Press Sele ct . Swit ch bet ween c alls •P r e s s o r Swap . The icon represents the active call an d the icon represents the call on hold.
[ 39 ] Advanced calling features Use in-call options During a call, press Optio ns to see the In -call menu. Your choices a re: Put a call on hold 1 To put a call on hold, press Hol d . 2 To retu rn to the call, press Unhold . Make a new call 1 Enter the second phone number , or recall it from the phone book.
[ 40 ] Switch betwee n two calls in progress •P r e s s o r Swap . The icon represents the active call an d the icon represents the call on hold. End the active call •P r e s s . The held call becomes the a ctive call. Send touc h ton es When you press the keys duri ng a call, your phone generates sou nds known as touch tones.

[ 42 ] Conference calls ++ This network service allows you t o make conference calls with your phone. Check with your service p rovider for details. Make a confere nce call 1 Make a normal call to the first person. 2 Press Opt ions and scroll to New call .
[ 43 ] Advanced calling features T ransfer a call ++ When you have one active an d one held call, you can connect th e two calls and disconnect yourself from the call. Note: Y our network m ust support this feature. • During a call, press Options , scroll to Tra n s fer , th en pre ss Sel ect .
[ 44 ] 54 F orward when pho ne off o r no coverage 55 Forward wh en not a ble to take cal ls Combines the previous thr ee types, and lets you choose a delay time between 5 a nd 30 seconds. 56 Forward all fax cal ls 57 Forward all da ta calls 58 Cancel all call forwarding 2 Press Sele ct .
[ 45 ] Advanced calling features Note: Status is not available for Forw ard when not a ble to take c alls . Y ou can press Number to see which phone number the calls a re being forwarded to. • Automatic redial This feature redials the numbe r you’re trying to call up to te n times.
[ 46 ] Note: The order of the f ollowing steps may vary , depending on which dialing sequence your card uses. 6 Enter the a ccess number (usually the 1-800 number l isted on the ba ck of the calling card), then press OK . 7 Enter the card number and/or PIN, then press OK .
[ 47 ] Advanced calling features Make a calling card call 1 Enter the phone number , including any prefix (such as 0 or 1) that your calling card may require. See your calling card for instructions. 2 Press and hold until your p hone displays Card call .
[ 48 ] Note: Do NOT press Quit when yo u’re f inishe d. The phone automatically stops recording and then saves and replays the voice tag. If recording is not successful, your phone displays V oic e system error . Press Opt ions , scroll to Add voice tag , and r epeat steps 3 - 5.
[ 49 ] Advanced calling features 2 Pronounce the voice tag clearl y into the microphone. Searc hing appears. When the phone finds the voice tag, Found appears, and the phone automatically dials t he number . If the phone does not locate a number , No match found.
[ 50 ] 2 Press Sele ct , then scroll to the name with the voice tag you want to change. 3 Press Opt ions , scroll to Era se , and press OK . Erase voice t ag? appears.
[ 5 1 ] Advanced calling features Call a 1-touch dial number • Press and hold the appropriate key , or press the key th en press . The phone dials the number . 1-touc h dial ing f or key 1 • If your phone is set up for voice mail, you can press and hold and your phone dials voice mail.
[ 52 ] • Use the phone book To use phone book menus, begin at the Start screen and pre ss Nam es . Then, scroll through the m enus to select a particular menu or option. • Caller groups Y ou can create groups of names in your phone book and give each group a different ringing tone.
[ 53 ] Advanced calling features Add names to a cal ler group The name you add to a caller group must first be stored in the phone book. 1 From the Start sc reen, scroll to the name or number you want. 2 Press Deta ils , then pr ess Optio ns . 3 Scroll to Caller grou ps and press Select .
[ 54 ] Assign group grap hics Each caller group has a graphic (picture) associated with it. When you get a call from som eone whom y ou have assig ned to a cal ler group, the graphic associated with that group flashes on the screen. To turn the graphic on for a caller group: 1 Press Names , scroll to Caller grou ps , and press Se lect .
[ 55 ] Advanced calling features • Call timers The phone automatically tracks the amount of time you’ve spent on calls. If you have tw o phone lines If you have subscribed to a second phone line (see “W ork with two phone lines” on page 35), call timers are separate for e ach of your phone lin es.
[ 56 ] Note: The actual time invoi ced for calls by your service provi der m ay va ry , depending on network features, r ounding-off for billing, and so forth. • Use call cost limits This feature helps you limit the amount of m oney you spend on you r mobile phone bills.
[ 57 ] Advanced calling features View call costs 1 Press Menu 2 6. 2 Scroll to Last cal l cost (cost of last call, or current call if applicable) or All c alls co st (cost of all calls since counters were last reset). Clear call cost counters 1 Press Menu 2 6.
[ 58 ] 1 1. Customizing your phone • Profiles Profiles let you set your phone’s sound settings to whatever environment you find yourself in, whether it’s a meeting or a soccer game.
[ 59 ] Customizing your phone 4 Scroll to Customize , then press OK . The customize options appear . Ringi ng options Choose how a profile notifies you of an incoming call. 1 Scroll to one of th e following, and press OK . Ring : The ph one rings. Ascendin g : T he ringing volume starts low and increases with successive rings.
[ 60 ] 5 Scroll to the tone you want, then pause to hear a sample of the tone. 6 Press OK to select th e tone or continue scrolling to select a different tone. Ringi ng volume This feature sets the ringing volume for incoming voice calls and message alert tones.
[ 6 1 ] Customizing your phone 5 Scroll to On or Off and press OK . If you choose On , you r phone vibra tes even if you have set Ringing option s (see page 59 ) to Sile nt . Mes sa ge a ler t ton e This option sets the tone your phone makes when you get a text message.

Rename a profile 1 Press Menu 3. 2 Scroll to the profile you want to rename and pre ss Options . Note: Remember , you cannot re name the Normal, Car , or Headse t profiles.

[ 65 ] Customizing your phone Set automa tic updat e of dat e and time ++ If this feature is supported by your wireless ser vice provider , it automatically updates the clock in your phone in acc ordance with the current time zone. Press Me nu 4 3 and choose: • On : Updates the date and time automatically .
[ 66 ] 12. Security features • Lock the keypad (K eyguard) The keypad lock (Keyguard) disables your keypad to prevent accidental key pr esses (for example, when your phone is in your pocket or purse). Note: K eyguard does not prevent unauthorized use of your phone.
[ 67 ] Security fe atures PIN codes The PIN (P ersonal Identity Number) and PIN2 codes are 4- to 8-digit numbers that usually come from your service provider along with the SI M card. Use the P IN code to protect your phone and SI M card against unauthorized use.
[ 68 ] Note: If you make a mistake while entering the cod e, Code Error appears. Start again at step 2 and be careful to enter the correct code. If you enter th e wrong code th ree ti mes in a row , t he PIN co de is blocked. To unblock the PIN cod e, see “PUK code s” on page 6 8.
[ 69 ] Security fe atures Note: If you enter a wrong PUK code ten times in a r ow , the SIM card becomes invalid and you must contact your s ervice provider f or a new ca rd. 5 Enter the n ew PIN code, then pr ess OK . 6 Enter the new PIN code again to verify , and press OK .
[ 7 0 ] • Fixed dialing If supported by your SIM ca rd, this feature lets you restr ict your outgoing calls to phone numbers included in the fixed dialin g list or beginning with the same digit(s) as an entry in the list.
[ 7 1 ] Security fe atures T urn on call restrictions 1 Press Menu 4 6 3. 2 Scroll through the types of calls you can restrict, and press Select when you se e the o ne you w ant. Outgoing calls : Calls cannot be made. Interna tiona l call s : Calls cannot be m ade to foreign countries.
[ 72 ] • Set up a closed user group ++ This network service specifies the gr oup of people to whom you can call and who can call you. Preset resets the phone to use a user group that the SIM card owner h as agreed upon with the ser vice provider .
[ 73 ] Select a system 13. Select a system Y ou can select how your phone ch ooses a wireless network, as there may be more than one available. The selection you make stays active until you change it or change the SIM card. 1 Press Menu 4 5 4. 2 Scroll to Autom atic or Manual , then press Select .
[ 74 ] 14. T ext messages ++ The text message network service allows you to send short text messages to other phones that have tex t message capability . You can also ask the service provider to con vert the message to ot her formats such as email and fa x.
[ 75 ] Tex t messages++ •W r i t i n g m e s s a g e s Using standard text inp ut When you select this mode, the ABC icon appears as visual confirmation. 1 Find the key that h as the letter you want to enter . 2 Press it as many times as n eeded for the letter to appear on the screen.
[ 76 ] Predictive text input tools - Use for word entry . Press each key only on ce for each letter . Press to view the next matching wor d if the underlined word is not the word you intended. Spell Press to add a new w ord to the dictionary . Press once to accept a wo rd and add a space.

[ 78 ] • To insert a symbol, press and hold . The symbol sc reen appears. Select the de sired symbol and press Inse rt . 2 When you have f inished writing, check the underlined word to see if it is the word you intended to write. If the word is correct • Insert a pun ctuation ma rk, if neede d.
[ 79 ] Tex t messages++ 2 Press Spel l and enter the w ord(s) using standard text input (see “Standard text input” on page 25). 3 Press OK to save the word(s). Insert numbers 1 To add a numb er to the message, press and hold until app ears . 2 Key in the desired numbers, th en press and hold to return to ABC mode.
[ 80 ] 2 Enter a message of up to 1 60 characte rs. The number of available characters appears in the top right cor ner of the screen. 3 Once you have finished writing, pr ess Optio ns , scroll to Send , then press OK . 4 Enter or recall the r ecipient’s phone number , then press OK .
[ 8 1 ] Tex t messages++ • Read text messages Read new text m essages now When you receive a text message, the phone di splays Message receiv ed and the indicator , and makes a sound ( depending on the “Message alert tone”; s ee page 6 1). 1 To re ad the message, pres s Rea d .

[ 83 ] Tex t messages++ 2 Scroll to Use number , then pres s OK . 3 If more than one n umber is shown, scroll to the one you want, then press OK . The phone displays the number on the screen. You can dial it or save it as if you had entered it yourself.
[ 84 ] Change comm on settings for all messages 1 Press Menu 1 5. 2 Scroll to Common , then press Select . 3 Scroll to Delivery reports or Reply via same center , then pr ess Se lect . Delivery reports : Scroll to Ye s or No , then pre ss OK . Ye s me ans that the network tries to send delivery reports for the messages you send.
[ 85 ] Tex t messages++ 3 Scroll to the picture you want to send, then press View . The picture appears. T o choose a different picture, press Back , scroll to another picture, then press View . 4 Press Opt ions and scroll to Forw ard . 5 Recall or enter th e phone number to which you want to send the picture message.
[ 86 ] Receive picture messages 1 When your phone displays Picture message received , press View and the message appears. 2 If the picture has a text message w ith it, scroll up or dow n to see the entire m essage. 3 Press Save to keep the picture message, or press Back and Exit to delete it.
[ 87 ] Y ou r personal digital assistant 15. Y our personal digital assistant • Calendar The calendar keeps track of reminders, calls you need to m ake, meetings, and birthdays. It can even soun d an alarm when it’s time for you to make a call or go to a meeting.
[ 88 ] View th e calend ar Press Menu 8 to see the current day’s calendar screen. View d ay not es This option allows you to view , erase, edit, move, and send notes m ade for the selected day .
[ 89 ] Y ou r personal digital assistant When you set ca lendar notes for the displayed date, the appr opriate icon(s) appear in the lower right-hand corner: Erase notes 1 Scroll to Era se not es and press Select . 2 Scroll to Of chosen day , One b y one , or All a t o nce , then pr ess OK .
[ 90 ] Send/receive calendar notes When someone sends you a note, your phone displays Calenda r note received . Y ou can save the note in your calendar and work with it in the same way as any other note in your calendar , including setting an alarm. For information on sending calendar n otes, see “Send in formation via IR” on page 95.
[ 9 1 ] Y ou r personal digital assistant 2 Enter the alarm time in hhmm forma t. 3 Press OK . 4 Select either am or pm and press OK . The icon appears at the top of the scr een as a reminder . Note: Step 4 is necessary only if you have selected am/pm format.
[ 92 ] • Business cards Y our ph one can send or receive electronic business cards consisting of a name and phone number . You can save received business cards to your phone book. Send a business ca rd 1 Recall the name from your phone book. 2 Press Deta ils , if shown, or skip to Step 3.
[ 93 ] Y ou r personal digital assistant 1 When your phone displays Busi ness card received , press Optio ns . Show is sele cted. 2 Press OK to read the information. Save a viewed business card 1 After viewing the business card, press Back , scroll to Save , then press OK .
