19 Charging the Battery First Steps Turning On and Off the Camera Press the power switch to turn on the camera. The power-on lamp (green) will li ght, and then the monitor will turn on (the power-on lamp turns off when the monitor turns on). To tur n off the camera, press the power switch again.

25 Step 1 Turn the Camera On and Select A (Auto) Mode Basic Photography and Playback: A (Auto) Mode Indicators Displayed in A (Auto) Mode • The indicators and photo info displayed during shooting and playback will turn off after a few seconds ( A 175).
26 Basic Photography and Playback: A (Auto) Mode Step 2 F rame a Picture 1 Use both hands and ready the camera. Keep fingers, hair, the camera strap, and other objects away from the lens, flash, AF assi st-illuminator, microphone, and speaker.
27 Step 2 Frame a Picture Basic Photography and Playback: A (Auto) Mode Using the Zoom Use the zoom control to activate opti cal zoom. Rotate the zoom control toward g to zoom in, increasing the size of the subject. Rotate the zoom control toward f to zoom out, increasing the area visible in the frame.

The flash mode can be set to match the shooting conditions. • When ISO sensitivity is set to Auto , the flash has a range of 0.

35 Basic Photography and Playback: A (Auto) Mode T ak ing Pictures with the Se lf-timer The self-timer is useful for self-portraits or reducing the effects of camera shake that occur when the shutter-releas e button is pressed. The timer can be set to ten or two seconds.
36 Taking Pictures with the Self-timer Basic Photography and Playback: A (Auto) Mode 4 Press the shutter-release button the rest of the way down. The self-timer s tarts, and the num ber of seconds remaining before the sh utter is released is displayed in the m onitor.
37 Basic Photography and Playback: A (Auto) Mode T ak ing Pictures with the Smile Ti mer The camera uses face detection to dete ct human faces, and then automatically releases the shutter when a smile is detected. This feature can be used when shooting mode ( A 45) is set to A (auto) mode or the S (night portrait) or Portrait sce ne mode ( A 61).
38 Taking Pictures with the Sm ile Timer Basic Photography and Playback: A (Auto) Mode B Notes on the Smile Timer • Digital zoom is not available. • Under some shooting conditions, the camera may be unable to detect faces or detect smiles. • See “Notes on Fa ce Detection” ( A 57) for more information.
39 Basic Photography and Playback: A (Auto) Mode Macro Mode Macro mode is used for taking pictures of objects as clo se as 4 cm (1.6 in.). Note that the flash may be unable to light the entire subject at distances of less than 50 cm (1 ft . 8 in.). 1 Press the rotary multi selector p (macro mode).
