viii Introduction Thank you for your purchase of a Nikon SUPER COOLSCAN 8000 ED (8000 ED). This manual describes how to care for , install, and use your scanner . Be sure that you have r ead and under - stood its contents before using your scanner , and leave it where those who use the scanner will r ead it.
1 Setup This chapter describes how to set up the scanner , how to install Nikon Scan, and how to connect the scanner . It also describes how to care for your scanner when it is not in use and how to treat film to ensur e the best r esults when you make a scan.
2 Befor e Using Y our Scanner Connecting the Scanner • Connect the scanner directly to the computer as described in “Connecting the Scan- ner” ( 25). The scanner may not function as expected when connected to an IEEE 1394 hub. • The scanner may not function as expected used with other IEEE 1394 devices.
3 Get to Know Y our Scanner Y our Scanner Front View Rear View 쐇 Power switch Press this switch to turn the scanner on and off. 쐋 Eject button Use this button to eject holders fr om the scanner . 쐇 쐆 쐂 쐋 쐄 쐏 Status LED This LED blinks slowly (roughly twice ever y three seconds) when the scanner is in operation.
4 Accessories After unpacking the scanner , check that the package contains all the items listed below . Con- tact your retailer immediately should you find that anything is missing or damaged. FH-835M 35-mm slide mount holder (1) Use this holder to scan up to five mounted 35- mm slides.
5 C D - R O M C D - R O M C D - R O M C D - R O M C D - R O M C D - R O M C D - R O M C D - R O M C D - R O M C D - R O M Nikon Scan 3.1 CD-ROM (1) This CD contains driver software for your Nikon scanner . Depending on the country of sale, it may also include a variety of sample software.
6 Before connecting the power and interface cables, choose a flat, stable location for your scan- ner close to the computer and to a suitable power outlet.
7 Protect Y our Film The Digital ICE photo retouch function built into your Nikon scanner can be used to eliminate the effects of dust, scratches, and sur face defects on your film.
8 Do not turn other devices on or off or disconnect interface cables while scanning is in progress (i.e., while the scanner status LED is blinking slowly). Connect the scanner directly to the computer . The scanner may not function as expected when connected to a hub.
9 Installing the IEEE 1394/Fir ewire Interface Boar d If your computer is not already equipped with a built-in IEEE 1394 inter face port or a suitable expansion board or car d, you can install the IEEE 1394/Firewire interface boar d provided with your scanner .
10 Installing the IEEE 1394/Fir ewire Interface Boar d in a PCI Slot After turning the computer off and disconnecting all cables, insert the interface boar d in one of the computer’ s PCI slots as shown below . For information on the location of the PCI slots and on installing PCI boards, see the documentation pr ovided with your computer .
11 Installing the Drivers for the IEEE 1394/Firewire Interface Boar d (Windows Only) After installing the interface boar d in a PCI slot, closing the computer’ s case, and reconnecting the cables, turn the computer on and install the board drivers as described below .
12 Windows 2000 Professional The first time the computer is powered on with the boar d in place, Windows 2000 will auto- matically install the board drivers.
13 Windows Millennium Edition (Me) The first time the computer is power ed on with the board in place, Windows Me will automati- cally install the board drivers. T o confirm that the drivers are installed and functioning normally: 1 The dialog shown at right will be dis- played.
14 3 The dialog shown at right will be dis- played. After making sure that none of the options are selected, click Next . 2 Select Search for the best driver for your device (Recommended) and click Next . 1 The first time the computer is powered on with the board in place, the dialog shown at right will be displayed.
15 5 The dialog shown at right will be dis- played. Click Next . 6 If the Insert Disk dialog is displayed, in- sert the Windows 98 Second Edition CD into the CD-ROM drive and click OK .
16 Installing Nikon Scan Before you can connect your scanner to your computer , you will need to install Nikon Scan 3 driver software for your scanner . The procedure for installing Nikon Scan 3 on Windows com- puters differs fr om the install procedur e for Macintosh computers.
17 Installing the IEEE 1394 Update for Windows 98 Second Edition This section describes how to install the IEEE 1394 update r equired when using the scanner under Windows 98 Second Edition (SE). 4 When the dialog shown at right is dis- played, remove the CD from the CD- ROM drive and then click Ye s to restart your computer .
18 What to do when the CD-ROM does not start automatically . If the Welcome dialog does not appear when the CD-ROM is inserted in the drive: 1. Double click the My Computer icon 2. In the My Computer window , click on the CD-ROM drive icon with the right mouse button 3.
19 Choosing the correct color -space profile is very important if the scanner is to be used in a professional setting, for example as a part of a pr oduction workflow . The Nikon Scan Reference Manual contains information about the color management system used in Nikon Scan.
20 6 Choose sRGB from the list of color- space profiles and click OK . More in- formation about the different profiles is available in the Nikon Scan Refer- ence Manual . 7 The installation complete dialog will be displayed. Click Finish to exit the InstallShield wizard.
21 Installing Nikon Scan on a Macintosh Before installing Nikon Scan, turn your computer on and wait for it to start up. Check to make sure that: • The scanner is not connected to your computer •Y.
22 2 When the installer starts, click Con- tinue… to display the license agree- ment. Clicking Accept displays the ReadMe file. T ake a few moments to read this file, which may contain im- portant information that could not be included in this manual.
23 4 Once the Nikon Scan program files have been copied to disk, a color -space selection wizard will be displayed. Click Use Wizard to have the wizard assist you in choosing a color -space profile (recommended) or Use name list to choose a custom profile (see the Nikon Scan Software Manual for details).
24 7 Nikon Scan 3 can be used to scan im- ages directly into any application that supports Adobe Photoshop 5.0 ac- quire plug-ins. The installer will dis- play a list of plug-in folders for the applications currently installed on your computer; choose the folders containing Adobe Photoshop plug-ins and click OK to copy the Nikon Scan 3.
25 Connect the Power Cable Before connecting the power cables, be sur e the scanner is off. Attach the female end of the power cable to the AC connector on the r ear of the scanner and insert the male end into a general-purpose (AC 100–240 V , 50/60 Hz) household outlet.
26 Tu rn the Scanner On Before turning the scanner on for the first time, confirm that the Nikon Scan 3.1 CD is in your computer’ s CD-ROM drive. Press the power switch to turn the scanner on. When the scanner is turned on, the status LED will blink for a few seconds while the scanner initializes and then glow steadily .
27 Device Registration (Windows Only) The first time you connect the scanner to a Windows computer , you will need to “register” the scanner with the system by in- stalling the hardwar e drivers. Windows XP Home Edition/Professional . 28 Windows 2000 Professional .
28 Windows XP Home Edition/Windows XP Professional Registering the Scanner with Windows XP 1 Tu rn the scanner on The first time the computer detects the scanner , W indows will display the dialog shown at right. Select the automatic in- stall option and click Next .
29 4 Click Continue Anyway Click Continue Anyway to begin instal- lation of the files need to register the scan- ner . 5 Click Finish Click Finish to complete installation. 3 Select ls8000xp.inf Select ls8000xp.inf in the list of drivers and click Next .
30 Confirming Device Registration (Windows XP) After registering the scanner , confirm that the device is working normally as described below . 1 Tu rn the scanner on Make sure that the scanner is connected and turned on.
31 5 Confirm that the scanner is working properly Double-click the listing for your scanner that appears under “Imaging devices.” The scanner Properties dialog will be dis- played. Click the General tab and con- firm that “This device is working pr op- erly” appears under “Device Status.
32 Updating the Device Driver (Windows XP) If the scanner is not listed under “Imaging devices” in the Device Manager or the message “This device is working properly” does not appear in the Pr operties dialog, you will need to re install the device driver as detailed below .
33 4 Select ls8000xp.inf Select ls8000xp.inf in the list of drivers and click Next . “ls8000xp.inf” If ls8000xp.inf is not visible in the list, drag the scroll bar at the right of the list until it is displayed. 5 Click Continue Anyway Click Continue Anyway to begin instal- lation of the files need to register the scan- ner .
34 Logging On Log on as the Administrator when registering the scanner . The Welcome Window If the Welcome pr ogram starts automatically when you insert the Nikon Scan CD, click Exit to close the Welcome window .
35 3 Select Specify a location Select Specify a location and click Next . 4 Click Browse… When the dialog shown at right is dis- played, click Browse… .
36 6 Confirm the file path The dialog shown at right will be displayed. Confirm that the path “INFLS8000Win2000” appears after the drive letter of the CD-ROM drive and click OK . If the Correct Path Is Not Displayed If the correct path is not displayed, r epeat steps 4–6 to select the correct path.
37 The dialog shown at right will be displayed while Windows registers the scanner . 10 Restart the computer Click Y es to restart the computer . 11 Confirm device registration Confirm that the scanner has been correctly r egistered with the system as described in “Confirming Device Registration (Windows 2000 Professional)” ( 38).

41 4 Select the search option Select the search option and click Next . 5 Insert the Nikon Scan 3 CD Holding down the shift key to prevent the We lcome program from starting auto- matically , insert the Nikon Scan 3 CD into the CD-ROM drive.
42 The Welcome Window If the Welcome pr ogram starts automatically when you insert the Nikon Scan CD, click Exit to close the Welcome window . Windows Millennium Edition (Me) Registering the Scanner with Windows Me 1 Tu rn the scanner on The first time the computer detects the scanner , W indows will display the dialog shown at right.
43 4 Restart the computer Click Y es to restart the computer . 5 Confirm device registration Confirm that the scanner has been correctly r egistered with the system as described in “Confirming Device Registration (Windows Me)” ( 44). 3 Click Finish Click Finish to complete installation.
44 Confirming Device Registration (Windows Me) After registering the scanner , confirm that the device is working normally as described below . 1 Tu rn the scanner on Make sure that the scanner is connected and turned on. 2 Open the System Properties dialog From the Start menu, select Settings > Control Panel and double-click the System icon.
45 5 Confirm that the scanner is working properly Double-click the listing for your scanner that appears under “Imaging Device.” The scanner Properties dialog will be dis- played. Click the General tab and con- firm that “This device is working pr op- erly” appears under “Device Status.
46 Updating the Device Driver (Windows Me) If the scanner is not listed under “Imaging Device” in the Device Manager or the message “This device is working properly” does not appear in the Pr operties dialog, you will need to re install the device driver as detailed below .
47 4 Select the search option Select the search option and click Next . 5 Select LS8000ME.INF Select LS8000ME.INF in the list of driv- ers and click OK . “LS8000ME.INF” Several drivers with similar names may be displayed. Be sure to select the driver with the path ending in LS8000ME.
48 Windows 98 Second Edition (SE) Registering the Scanner with Windows 98 SE Before beginning device r egistration, make sure that you have completed the IEEE 1394 up- date described in “Installing the IEEE 1394 Update for Windows 98 Second Edition” ( 17).
49 The Welcome Window If the Welcome pr ogram starts automatically when you insert the Nikon Scan CD, click Exit to close the Welcome window . Navigate to “C:windowssystem32 driv- ers” by selecting “C:” from the list of drives and double-clicking in turn on each of the following folders: “windows”, “system32”, and “drivers.
50 5 Select the Win98SE folder The Browse for Folder dialog will be dis- played. Select the “Win98SE” folder under “Nkscan” > “INF” > “Ls8000” and click OK .
51 Confirming Device Registration (Windows 98 SE) After registering the scanner , confirm that the device is working normally as described below . 1 Tu rn the scanner on Make sure that the scanner is connected and turned on. 2 Open the System Properties dialog From the Start menu, select Settings > Control Panel and double-click the System icon.

54 7 Begin installation of the device drivers A dialog will be displayed stating that Wi ndows has found the drivers for the device. Click Next . 8 Click Finish Click Finish to complete installation.

56 Step 1—Ready the Film The holder you will use depends on the type of film scanned. This example illustrates how to scan 35-mm film using the FH-835S film holder provided with your scanner . The FH-835S is used when scanning strips of 35-mm film up to six frames in length.
57 W ith the holder oriented so that the insertion guide is to the left, insert your fingers into the holes in the lower portion holder to unlatch the hooks holding the upper cover in place, then open the holder .
58 Step 2—Place the Film in the Holder Place the film to be scanned in the holder with the matte emulsion surface down (the shiny surface up) and the frames aligned with the apertur es in the lower portion of the holder . Apertures Place the second strip of film in the holder as described above, aligning it with the next r ow of apertures.
59 Openings are pr ovided in the upper cover to allow you to adjust the position of film befor e latching the cover closed. Using these openings, insert a pointed object, such as a pen, in the film perforations and adjust the position of the film so that the frames ar e aligned with the apertures in the holder .
60 Step 3—Insert the Holder After confirming that the status LED is glowing steadily , slide a holder into the holder slot as shown below , with the insertion guide up and pointing toward the scanner .
61 Step 4—Scan the Slide The actual scan is performed using Nikon Scan (for detailed information on using Nikon Scan, see the Nikon Scan 3 Software Manual ). Nikon Scan can be used as a “stand-alone” application for scanning images and saving them to disk as described below .
62 Using Nikon Scan This example illustrates how to scan 35-mm film using the FH-835S film holder . Using Nikon scan for the First Time The first time you run Nikon Scan, the status LED will emit five.
63 1 Choose the type of film to be scanned from the Nikon Scan media-type menu. 2 Choose a color model from the color- model menu. Calibrated RGB is the best choice in most circumstances.
64 3 Choose the frames to be scanned Click the thumbnail drawer tab to open the thumbnail drawer (the thumbnail drawer is not available when the optional FH-869GR rotating glass-cover ed holder for medium for - mat film is inserted in the scanner).
65 If the thumbnail drawer is too small to display all frames at once, you can enlarge the drawer by dragging the lower right corner , or use the scroll bar to view frames that can not be displayed in the drawer .
66 4 Click the Preview button Click the Preview button to cr eate a preview of the image to be scanned. Y ou can also create a pr eview by double-clicking a selected frame in the thumbnail drawer . Preview button The preview will be displayed in the pr eview ar ea.

Click the triangle at the top left corner of the Layout T ools palette in the T ool Chest to view the controls in the Layout T ools palette. In this example, the button is used to rotate the image 90 ° to the right.

76 Important The holder will automatically be ejected if you turn the scanner off and then on again. Caution Do not, under any circumstances, touch the holder as it is being ejected from the scanner . Wait for the holder to be fully ejected and the remove the holder from the scanner .

81 Using the FH-835S Holder for 35-mm Film Strips The FH-835S is used when scanning strips of 35-mm film up to six frames in length. Up to two film strips can be placed in the holder at a time.
82 Cautions Use only one type of film at a time. Do not place negative and positive film in the holder at the same time. To avoid damaging the film, use a blower to remove dust and lint from the film and holder .
83 Openings are pr ovided in the upper cover to allow you to adjust the position of film befor e latching the cover closed. Using these openings, insert a pointed object, such as a pen, in the film perforations and adjust the position of the film so that the frames ar e aligned with the apertures in the holder .
84 Masking Sheets When scanning film strips one at a time, be sure to cover the r emaining apertures with a masking sheet. Make sure to place the film strip on the left side and the mask strip of the right side with r espect to the direction of insertion as shown below .
85 Inserting Film and Masking Sheets Cut the masking sheets to the length needed to cover open apertures. Make sure that the film and masking sheets are inserted between the guides. If you insert the holder into the scanner with film riding up on the guides, the film holder may jam in the scanner .
86 Removing Film from the Holder Open the holder as described above and r emove the film. Insert your fingers in the holes in the lower holder and pick the film up by its edges. If the edges of the film ar e not accessible, tilt the holder so that the film slides to the edge of the depression at the end of the lower holder and then remove the film.
87 Using the FH-835M Holder for Mounted 35-mm Slides The FH-835M is used when scanning mounted 35-mm slides. Up to five slides can be placed in the holder at a time. Insert the slides with the matte emulsion surface down (the shiny surface up). Slide the mounts into place between the guides, oriented to match the apertur es in the holder .
88 Cautions Mounts must be 1.0–3.2 mm in thickness. Other mounts can not be used. Do not use force when inserting slides. Failure to observe this precaution could damage the clips that hold the mounts in place. Should you encounter resistance, try inserting the slides at a slight angle.
89 Once scanning is complete, press the eject button on the fr ont of the scanner or click the eject button in the scan window to eject the holder . Remove the holder and close the sliding cover . Eject button Removing Slides from the Holder Slide the mounts out fr om under the clips that hold them in place.
90 Using the FH-869S Holder for Br ownie Film The FH-869S is used when scanning medium-format (120/220) or 59 mm × 82 mm film for electron micr oscopes.
91 Insert the film with the matte emulsion surface down (the shiny surface up), with the end of the film against the stop, then lower the upper holders until they click into place. Thumbnails are displayed in the thumbnail drawer in the scan window in the or der shown below .
92 Curled Film Follow the steps below to remove curl fr om medium-format film. 1 Slide the latch in the direction indicated by the arrow . Latch Film that has more than 10 mm of curl can not be used. Use the optional FH-869G glass-cover ed brownie film holder or optional FH-869GR glass-cover ed rotating br ownie film holder .
93 Removing Film from the Holder Open the upper cover and take hold of the film by the edge at the r ear of the holder . Once scanning is complete, press the eject button on the fr ont of the scanner or click the eject button in the scan window to eject the holder .
94 When scanning Use Optional Holders Five types of holder are available for separate pur chase, each for use with a different type of film. Medium-format film strips Panorama film FH-869M holder for mounted Brownie film The FH-869M can be used to scan 6 × 4.
95 When scanning Use FH-816 16-mm film holder The FH-816 can be used to scan from one to thr ee strips of 16-mm film up to twenty frames in length FH-8G1 medical holder The FH-8G1 can be used to scan .
96 Using the FH-869M Holder for Mounted Br ownie Film The FH-869M is used when scanning mounted medium-format (Brownie) film. It can be used to scan up to two slides, one 6 × 4.5 or 6 × 6, the other 6 × 7, 6 × 8, or 6 × 9. Place the 6 × 4.5 or 6 × 6 slide at the front of the holder , the 6 × 7, 6 × 8, or 6 × 9 slide at the back.
97 Thumbnails are displayed in the thumbnail drawer in the scan window in the or der shown below . Direction of insertion Cautions Do not place negative and positive film in the holder at the same time. To avoid damaging the film, use a blower to remove dust and lint from the film and holder .
98 Once scanning is complete, press the eject button on the fr ont of the scanner or click the eject button in the scan window to eject the holder . Remove the holder and close the sliding cover . 99 Using the FH-869G Glass-Cover ed Holder for Br ownie Film The FH-869G is used when scanning medium-format (120/220) or 59 mm × 82 mm film for electron micr oscopes.
100 Placing Seals Between Frames Newton’ s rings (a radial interference pattern) may appear when you scan film that has been bent out of shape or otherwise distorted.
101 3 W ith the shiny surface of the film up (the emulsion side with seals in place down), place the film between the film guides with the beginning of the first exposure against the inner edge of the masking sheet. First exposure Masking sheet Film guides 4 Snap the cover closed.
102 Removing Film from the Holder Open the glass cover and tilt the holder so that the film slides to the depressions in the lower holder , then insert your fingers in the depressions and r emove the film.

104 When scanning with the FH-869GR, be sure to use a mask suited to the film to be scanned and to align the frame to be scanned with the aperture in the masking sheet. When using a 59mm by 82 mm electron micr oscope film, a 6 by 9 masking sheet should be used.
