Ov er vie w W elcome to Nik on View V er .3 for Windows (below , “Nik on Vie w”), br owser softwar e for the COOLPIX 990/950/800/700/ 900 series (below , “[COOLPIX digital] camera(s)”). The Nik on View camera driv ers and browser allo w rapid, easy access to camera image files when the camera is connected to a com- puter .

Br o wsing Imag e Files Once you ha v e installed the Nik on View softwar e as described in the Quick Star t Guide , Nik on View allows y ou to use the camera’ s memor y car d in much the same wa y that you w ould use any other driv e .
Br owsing Ima ge Files F r om Y our Camera Y ou can use Nikon View to br owse the image files stor ed in your camera’ s memor y card and displa y them as thumbnails. Follow these steps to vie w image files stored in y our digital camera’ s memor y card.
3 Double-click the Digital Camera icon. 2 After turning on y our computer , double-click the Nik on Vie w icon in the My Computer window . The Nik on View windo w will open.
The camera’ s memor y card is tr eated as “read-onl y” when browsing in Nik on View . Files can not be copied from other f olders to the bro wsing window , nor can files be sa ved to the camera after editing in another application. The file names displa yed in the browsing windo w can not be changed.
For mor e inf ormation on: Changing Camera T ype , Port and Rate Settings The default serial port data-transfer rate is 115,200 bps. If you experience communications pr oblems, choose a low er data-transfer rate until y ou find one that works as described in “Changing Camera T ype, Port and Rate Settings”.
Br o wsing Ima g e Files Fr om a Card Reader If your computer has a T ype II PCMCIA card driv e , you can read compact flash-memory cards using a flash-memory adapter (a vailable separately fr om Nik on), or by using a compact flash memor y car d r eader .
Br o wsing Image Files: Br o wsing Image Files F rom a Car d Reader 11 Nik on View automatically detects the drive containing the flash-memory card. When more than tw o drives are mounted (PC car d slot or a com- pact flash-memor y car d r eader), Nikon View selects the drive containing the memor y car d.
Br o wsing Ima ge Files on Disk Nik on View can be used to br owse image files on disk ev en when the camera is not connected. Follow these steps to vie w image files on disk. 1 Double-click the Nik on View icon in the My Computer window . The Nik on View windo w will open.
Browsing image files in another folder… T o browse image files in another f older , choose Select F older fr om the View men u, or click the Select Folder button in the toolbar . If the button is hidden, enlarge the windo w to bring it into view . When the Br owse f or Folder dialog bo x appears, select the folder that y ou want to browse.
The list-style displa y is shown below . T o view the image files as thumbnail pr e views again, select Thumbnail View fr om the View menu or click the Thumb- nail View button.
Br o wsing in the Windo ws Explorer With Nik on View installed, you can also br owse image files sa ved in the camera’ s memor y car d using Windows Explorer . Click the Start button in the taskbar and select Windows Explor er fr om the Pr ograms sub-men u.
Br o wsing Image Files: Br o wsing in the Windo ws Explorer 16 Folders in the camera’ s memor y card can be displa y ed by click- ing the Digital Camera icon. Image files in the camera’ s memor y car d can be br owsed by clicking the icon for the desir ed folder .
W orking with Ima ge Files In br owsing with Nik on View , you can use the same standard operations that y ou would with other files under Windows. This chapter describes ho w to pr evie w image files, copy them to disk, and open them for editing in other applications.
Selecting Thumbnails T o cop y , print, or delete an image file , select the desir ed thumb- nail by clicking it once. Selected thumbnails are indicated by a dark gra y border .
Viewing Photo graphs Photographs can be vie wed at full r esolution in image win- dows. Photographs in image windo ws can be rotated and zoomed in or out using the contr ols on the image window toolbar . Any number of image windo ws ma y be open at one time.
Scr olling and resizing the imag e windo w When the entire photograph does not fit in the image windo w , you can vie w the hidden por tion b y dragging the scr oll sliders at the right and bottom of the window , or by clicking the scr oll bars or arr ow buttons.
Pla ying Mo vies Movies can be pla y ed with QuickTime Pla yer . In the thumbnail view of the br owser window , only the first frame of a movie file will be displa yed. Movie files ha ve the extension “.MO V”. Pla ying mo vies with QuickTime Pla y er Double-click the thumbnail of the movie file y ou wish to pla y .
Rotating Photo graph Thumbnails Selected photogra ph thumbnails in the br owsing windo w can be r otated ninety degrees to the left b y selecting Rotate Se- lected fr om the Edit menu or clicking the Rotate Selected button in the toolbar . (Movie file thumbnail can not be r o- tated.
W orking with Imag e Files: Deleting Imag e Files and Folders 23 Deleting Ima ge Files and F olders Image files can be deleted fr om the camera’ s memor y car d when no longer needed. Note that image files can not be r ecov ered fr om the Recycle Bin after deletion; be sure to back up an y image files you w ould like to k eep .
Printing Photo graphs Nik on View allo ws you to print selected photogra phs or all the photographs in the br owsing window . Follow these steps to print selected photogra phs. 1 Select the photograph(s) (JPEG or TIFF format files) y ou wish to print and then choose Print… fr om the File menu, or click the Print button in the toolbar .
Pr operties Click this button to bring up the Pr operties dialog box for the selected printer ; here y ou can change paper size and graphics settings. The specific contents of the Properties dialog box depend on the printer selected. Print range All With this command, all photographs displa yed in the br ows- ing window ar e printed.
The image files in the selected sour ce (the camera if Digital Camera is selected, a compact flash-memor y car d reader if Remo vable Media is selected, or a specified folder on a disk if Hard Disk is selected) will be r ead, and thumbnail pre views displa yed in the window .
W orking with Ima ge Files: Viewing Ima ge File Inf ormation 27 Viewing Ima ge File Information Information on selected image files can be vie wed. After choos- ing a thumbnail, select Properties fr om the File menu or click the Pr operties button in the toolbar .
W orking with Ima ge Files: Cop ying Imag e Files and F olders to Disk 28 Cop ying Imag e Files and F olders to Disk Image files and folders can be copied to disk b y using a drag- and-dr op or cop y-and-paste operation. Befor e cop ying image files or folders to disk, locate or cr eate a destination folder .
The pr ogress indicator will be displa y ed while the items ar e copied to disk. Click Cancel to abor t the operation. Once all items ha ve been copied to disk, the pr ogress indica- tor will disappear .
Digital Camera window The pr ogress indicator will be displa yed while the items are copied to the clipboard. Click Cancel to abort the opera- tion. Once all image files or folders ha ve been copied, the pr ogr ess indicator will disappear . 2 Open the destination folder and select P aste fr om the folder’ s Edit menu.

Once the contents of the memor y car d ha ve been copied, the pr ogress indicator will disa ppear . The Digital Camera folder is located in the destination f older and contains the complete contents of the memor y car d. Use the same pr ocess to cop y the entire contents of the memor y car d when using a card r eader .
W orking with Imag e Files: Opening Imag e Files in Another Application 33 Opening Imag e Files in Another Application Y ou can open the photographs recor ded with y our coolpix camera in any a pplication that supports JPEG (“.JPG”) or TIFF (“.TIF”) formats.

Inser ting Ima ges into Documents Nik on View supports OLE 2.0, which allows you to insert pho- tographs tak en with the COOLPIX digital cameras into docu- ments created b y any OLE 2.0 a pplication that suppor ts the JPEG (“.JPG”) or TIFF (“.TIF”) image format.

Nik on View Reference: The T oolbar 48 The T oolbar The buttons in the toolbar allow y ou to manage image files in the bro wsing window and perf orm various operations. Enlarge the window in order to vie w all of the command buttons in the toolbar . When you locate the cursor on the window frame, it changes into a bi-directional ar ro w .
Button Function Updates the image files in the window . Displa ys the Browse f or Folder dialog box, allowing y ou to select the folder containing the image files you want to bro wse. This command ma y only be used when br owsing image files in the Hard Disk window .
The Right-Button Menus Y ou can use right-button menu commands to perform various operations such as Pre view , Cop y , List View , and so on. Click a thumbnail with the right mouse button to select the image file and displa y a menu of command shortcuts.
