7 Basic Operations Introduction Shutter-release B utton The camera features a two-stage shutter-release button. To set focus and exposure, press the shutter-release butto n halfway, stopping when you fee l resistance. When the shutter-release butt on is pressed halfway, focus and exposure (shutter speed and aperture value) are set.
8 Introduction Operating the T ouch P anel The monitor on the COOLPIX S4100 is a to uch panel display. Use a finger or the supplied stylus to operate the touch panel.

16 First Steps First Steps Inserting the Batter y Insert a Rechargeable Li -ion Battery EN-EL19 (supplied) into the camera. • Charge the battery before the first use or when the battery is running low ( A 18). 1 Open the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover.
17 Inserting the Battery First Steps Removing the Battery Turn the camera off ( A 21) and be sure that the power-on lamp and the monito r have turned off before opening the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover.
18 First Steps Charging the Batt er y Charge the supplied Rechargeable Li-ion Battery EN-EL19 inserted into the camera, by connecting the suppli ed Charging AC Adapter EH-69P to the camera via the supplied USB Cable UC-E6, and th en plugging the Charging AC Adapter into an electrical outlet.
19 Charging the Battery First Steps 4 Plug the Charging AC Adapter into an electrical outlet. The charge lamp slowly blinks green to indicate that the battery is charging. About two hours and ten minut es are required to charge a fully exhaus ted batt ery.

21 Charging the Battery First Steps Turning On and Off the Camera Press the power switch to turn on the camera. The power-on lamp (green) will light, and then the monitor will turn on (the power-on lamp turns off when t he mon itor tu rns on) . To turn off the camera, press the power switch again.
22 First Steps Setting Display Language , Date and T ime A language-selection dialog is displayed the first time the camera is turned on. 1 Press the power switch to turn on the camera. The power-on lamp (green) will light, and then the monitor will turn on (the po wer-on lamp tu rns off when the monitor turn s on).
23 Setting Display Language, Date and Time First Steps 5 Tap the order in which the day, month, and year are displayed. 6 Edit the date and time. Tap the desired field and A or B to edit the value. 7 Tap I . The settings are applied, the lens extends, and the camera enters shooting mode.
24 First Steps Inserting Memor y Cards Image, sound, and movie files are stored in the camera’s internal memory (approximately 20 MB) or on removabl e Secure Digital (SD) memory cards (available commercially; A 173).

The last picture taken will be disp layed in full-frame playback mode. Drag the current picture left or right to displa y the previous or next picture.

34 Basic Photography and Playback: A (Auto) Mode Using the B asic Shooting F unctions m Flash Mode Flash mode can be selected to suit the shooting conditions. • When ISO sensitivity is set to Auto , the flash has a range of 0.5–4.5 m (1 ft. 8 in.–14 ft.
35 Using the Basic Shooting Functions Basic Photography and Playback: A (Auto) Mode B Shooting When the Flash is Disabled ( c ) or Lighting is Dim • Use of a tripod is recommended. • The noise reduction func tion ma y be activated with some shooting conditions such as di m lighting.

This feature is useful for reducing the effects of camera shake that occurs when pressing the shutter-release button .
