Patents 5,186,050; 6,426,918 How the Ultrasonic Speed Sensor W orks The speed sensor uses ultrasonic pulses to collect echoes from small par ticles in the w ater as they pass under two tr ansducers embedded in the inser t (see Figure 1).
2 Antifouling P aint Marine growth can accumulate r apidly on the ultrasonic sensor’ s surf ace reducing performance within weeks. Surf aces exposed to salt water must be coated with antifouling paint. Use water -based antif ouling paint only . Ne ver use k etone-based paint, since ketones can attac k many plastics possib ly damaging the sensor .

4 Operation, Maintenance , and Repair How the V alve W orks The sensor incor porates a self-closing v alve which minimiz es the flow of w ater into the vessel when the ultrasonic insert is removed. The cur ved flap v alve is activated b y both a spr ing and water pressure.
