4 LED Descriptions The LEDs indicate the status of your Powerline device. • Wh en you plug in the Powerline device, the Power LED lights and tur ns green. • T he Ethernet LED lights a nd turns green when you connect a powered-on Ether net device to a t least one Ethern et port.
5 Button Descriptions The buttons on your Powe rline device let you do the following: • Factory Reset button: Use the Factory Reset button to return your Powerline device to its defaul t factory settings. Press the Factory Reset button fo r 2 seco nds, and th en release it.
6 Install the Access P oint an d Surf the W eb with WiFi 1. Secure your Powe rline network. These instructions assume that yo u already have a Powerline ne twork tha t includes at least 2 Powe rline devices and that yo u want to add the XWN5001 to your ne twork.
7 c. Within 2 minutes, press the Secur ity button on the XWN5001 for 2 seco nds, and then re lease the button. Reset Reset d. After a few secon ds, the security is set a nd the Power LEDs turn solid g reen. The Powerline d evices can communicat e over the Powerlin e netw ork in a secure way .
8 2. Plug one of your Power line devices into a wall outlet ne ar your router or gatew ay . If you want to share Internet access acro ss your home, make sure to connect the Powerline device to your Internet gateway with an Ethernet cable. 10 Note: You can connect an Eth ernet-based device (like a game console , set-top box, or Blu-ray player) to the In ternet and the home network with the additiona l Ethernet port on the XWN5001.
11 4. Set up WiFi access on yo ur XWN5001 access point. Y ou can set up WiFi access on your XWN5001 acce ss point in o ne of two ways: • Option 1 : Use NETGEAR genie to manually configur e the wireless settings of your XWN5001 access point. a. Inst all NETGEAR genie.
12 d. Click the Powerline icon on the Network Map screen. The Powerline Utility screen displays: Powerline icon XWN5001 icon e. On the Powerline Utility screen, right-click the XWN5001 icon.
13 f. From the pop-up menu that di splays, select Wireless configurat ion . g. Enter the following wireless settings: • Wireless N etwork Name (SSID) • Wireless S ecurity T ype • Pa ssphrase.
14 If you want to clone your exis ting wireless netwo rk, enter the same wireless settings that your router or gateway uses. When you are r oaming in your house, your wireless client (laptop, tablet, or smar tphone) switches from one network (router or gateway) to the other (XWN5001), depending on the signal quality .
15 • Option 2 : Use the web browser setup guide to manually configure the wireless settings of your XWN500 1 access point. On your computer or wireless device (ta blet, smartphone): a. Open the softwar e that manages your wireless network conne ctions and connect to the XWN5001 network.
16 b. On the same com puter or wirele ss device, op en a web browser windo w . The browser takes you directly to the on screen setu p guide. If it does not, enter on e of the following into the browser address bar: www .mywifiext.net www .netgearextender .
17 If you want to clone your exis ting wireless netwo rk, enter the same wireless settings that your router or gateway uses. If you want to create a new wireless network, en ter new wireless settings. Creating a new wirele ss network le ts you have a second network in another zone of your house.
18 5. Connect your wireless clie nt (laptop, t ablet, or smartphone) to the XWN5001 for Internet access. • Option 3 : Use the WPS button on your wireless clie nt to automatically connect to the XWN5001 access point. a. Press the Security button on the XWN5001 for 2 seconds and release it.
