PREP ARA TION AND SETUP Before usi ng the r outer to connect your LAN to the Inter net, you must: • Order Inter net service fr om an Internet se rvice pro vi der (ISP) • Set up your PCs f or using.
PREP ARA TION AND SETUP CONT . Network Checklist T he Model R T311 Inter net Access Gateway Router uses IP . IP confi gurati on has the follo win g requirements: • All PCs must have TCP/IP manually installed and selected as the networki ng protocol.
Conf iguring TCP/IP Proper ties N ETG EAR recommends that you leave the TCP/IP setup par ameters at their factor y default settings unless you have a spec if ic reason to change them. W ith the d efault settings, your PC is conf ig ured to obtain its TCP/IP conf igur ation i nfor mati on automatically from a DHCP server on the local networ k.
8. Select Obtain an IP address autom atically . 9. Click on OK. T o obtain the conf igur ation i nfor mati on from the router : 1. T urn on the router . Be sure the router has been on f or at least on e minute before continuing to the next step. 2. Reboot each PC on your network.

If your service provider uses PPP oE, select Encapsulation as PPP oE, and enter these additional parameters: – If your connecti on suppor ts multiple ISPs, enter the Se rvice Name of the one you use. Otherwise leave Service Name b lank. – Enter the user name and password pr o vided by y our ISP .

DNS Server Address Assignment: If you kno w that your ISP does not automatically transmit DNS addresses to the router during login, select “ Use this server ” and enter the IP address of the ISP ’ s DNS server . A DNS server is a host on the Internet that tr anslates Inter net names (such as www addresses) to numer ic IP addresses.
