Reference Guide for the Model RT328 and Model RH348 ISDN Routers 1-2 Introduction Ke y Features The Model R T328/RH348 router provides the follo wing features: • Standard basic rate ISDN (BRI) conne.
Reference Guide for the Model RT328 and Model RH348 ISDN Routers Introduction 1-3 • T wisted pair and A UI Ethernet ports (Model R T328 router only) – RJ-45 interface allo wing connection to a 10B.
Reference Guide for the Model RT328 and Model RH348 ISDN Routers 1-4 Introduction TCP/IP Suppor t The Model R T328/RH348 router supports the T ransmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and Routing Information Protocol (RIP), which ensures that ISDN connections are established only when passing data.
Reference Guide for the Model RT328 and Model RH348 ISDN Routers Introduction 1-5 P AP and CHAP A uthentication For connecting to other routers, the Model R T328/RH348 router supports two authentication protocols: Passw ord Authentication Protocol (P AP) and Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol (CHAP).
Reference Guide for the Model RT328 and Model RH348 ISDN Routers 1-6 Introduction Basic Router Concepts In general, the cost of providing netw ork bandwidth is proportional to the data speed and the distance ov er which the network extends.
Reference Guide for the Model RT328 and Model RH348 ISDN Routers Introduction 1-7 Using RIP , routers update one another periodically and check to see if there are any changes to be added to the routing table.
Reference Guide for the Model RT328 and Model RH348 ISDN Routers 1-8 Introduction There are five standard classes of IP addresses. These address classes have dif ferent ways of determining the network and host sections of the address, allo wing for different numbers of hosts on a network.
Reference Guide for the Model RT328 and Model RH348 ISDN Routers Introduction 1-9 Class E addresses are for experimental use. This addressing structure allo ws IP to uniquely identify each physical network and each node on each physical network.
Reference Guide for the Model RT328 and Model RH348 ISDN Routers 1-10 Introduction Subnet Addressing By looking at the addressing structures, you can see that e ven with a Class C address, there are a large number of hosts per network.
Reference Guide for the Model RT328 and Model RH348 ISDN Routers Introduction 1-11 T able 1-1 lists the additional subnet mask bits in dotted-decimal notation. T o use the table, write do wn the original class netmask and replace the 0 value octets with the dotted-decimal v alue of the additional subnet bits.
