1 Getting Star ted This manual describes how to configure and manage y our ReadyNAS ® storage system. Y our ReadyNAS storage system relies on the f ollowing applications: • ReadyCLOUD . Use this online ser vice to discov er your ReadyNAS system on y our local area networ k and access the local admin page.
Quic k-Star t Guide This manual pro vides conceptual inf or mation about storage systems , detailed instructions about using your system, and NETGEAR’ s recommendations about configur ing, managing, and backing up y our system. NETGEAR recommends that you read this man ual to mak e the best use of y our storage system.

F or a complete list of placement considerations , see the hardware man ual f or your system. 3. Connect the pow er adapter to the pow er cord. 4. Connect the pow er adapter to the back of the system and plug the po wer cord into a w all outlet or pow er strip.
ReadyNAS system fir mware is recent enough to w ork with the new ReadyCLOUD . If it is not, y ou see the message and the Upgrade Now b utton. Click the button to start the download and automatic restar t.
Click the OK b utton to dismiss the message and continue to ReadyCLOUD . Disco ver and Set Up Y our Read yNAS ReadyCLOUD is the online ser vice that you use to disco v er and set up ReadyNAS storage systems on your netw ork. Y ou can also use ReadyCLOUD to access and manage data on your ReadyNAS systems.
2. Click the Disco ver button. ReadyCLOUD automatically detects your ReadyNAS system on the netw ork. Y our new ReadyNAS system is mark ed with a NEW label. 3. Click the Setup b utton. 4. Select whether to use ReadyCLOUD or the local admin page to use to set up your system: • Option 1 .
b. Enter admin f or the user name, enter pass w ord f or the passw ord, and clic k the OK button. Both user name and pass word are case-sensitiv e. Y ou can change these credentials when you configure y our system. NETGEAR recommends that you change y our password as soon as possib le.

Access the Local Admin P age If your computer is connected to the same LAN as y our storage system, follo w these instr uctions to access the local admin page. F or inf ormation about remote access to the local admin page, see the ReadyNAS Remote User Manual .
2. Open a web bro wser and visit http://www .NETGEAR.com/register . The Product Registration web page displa ys. 3. T ake one of the f ollowing actions: • If you ha ve ne ver registered a NETGEAR product, clic k the Continue b utton.
• RAID . Protects against disk failure . • Snapshot technology . Protects against accidental data deletion or corr uption by pro viding point-in-time recov er y . • Real-time antivirus. Protects against loss or corruption from vir uses. • Bit rot protection.
2 V olume Configuration This chapter describes how to configure and manage the v olumes in your ReadyNAS stor age system. It includes the f ollowing sections: • Basic V olume and RAID Concepts • M.
Basic V olume and RAID Concepts T o get the most out of your ReadyNAS storage system, it is helpful to understand the basics of v olumes and RAID . Understanding these concepts is the first step to making good decisions about ho w to configure, manage, and use y our ReadyNAS storage system.
e xpansion happens online, y ou can continue to use your ReadyNAS system while the v olume capacity increases. Because X-RAID is a single-v olume architecture, if y ou configure y our hard disk drives to use X-RAID , your stor age system has only one v olume that is made up of all installed hard disk drives .
• JBOD . This most basic RAID le v el does not protect y our data from loss if one of your driv es f ails. JBOD is av ailable only on v olumes consisting of a single hard disk. • RAID 0 . RAID 0 distributes data across multiple disks , resulting in improv ed disk performance compared to systems that do not use RAID f ormatting.
v olume status, v olume maintenance and v olume protection. In addition to v olume topics, this section also cov ers extending the storage capacity on y ou ReadyNAS system. Change RAID Mode Y ou can change the RAID mode that your ReadyNAS stor age system uses.
When you s witch to X-RAID mode, any e xtra disks installed in y our system are automatically ref ormatted and used for storage e xpansion.Y ou cannot change the RAID mode of a RAID 0 or RAID 10 v olume. Note: T o change from Fle x-RAID to X-RAID on a single-v olume system: 1.
The disks that were par t of the v olumes become av ailable again f or other pur poses (the color of the disks tur ns b lack). 3. Create a new v olume from the av ailab le disks and select the RAID le v el (see Create and Encr ypt a V olume on page 28).
A pop-up screen displa ys the I/O stats in the Summar y tab . 4. Click the Disks tab . 5. F rom the Disk drop-down list, select one of the disks in the v olume to view its status . The disks are listed by their position in the enclosure: <column>x<ro w>.
function on each v olume. Enabling the chec ksum function impro v es the integrity of your data b ut reduces perf ormance speeds. Enable or disable the c hecksum function: 1. Select System > V olumes . 2. Select one of the v olumes listed on the left side of the screen.
Y ou must inser t the USB drive with the encryption key into a USB port on the ReadyNAS for the v olume to be unlock ed and accessible. Y ou must inser t the USB dr iv e to unloc k an encr ypted volume during reboot.
• Name . Enter a name f or the v olume. The volume must not ha ve the same name as a f older in the root f older system. The v olume names home , apps , and job_ are reser v ed and cannot be used. • Encryption . Select this check bo x to enable encr yption on the v olume.
4. T ype DESTRO Y to confir m your decision. 5. Click the Destr oy button. The v olume is deleted. The disks that were par t of the v olume become av ailable again f or other pur poses (the color of the disks tur ns blac k).
V ertically Expand a V olume Both X-RAID and Fle x-RAID v olumes suppor t ver tical e xpansion. When you v er tically e xpand a Fle x-RAID v olume, y ou must replace all disks in the volume with larger-capacity disks. V er tical expansion is not a v ailable f or RAID 0 volumes .
If you set up email notifications f or your system, y ou receiv e an email message when the process finishes. For more inf or mation about aler t notifications, see Configure System Aler ts on page 146. 3. Repeat Step 1 on page 32 – Step 2 on page 32 until you ha ve replaced the required number of disks with larger-capacity disks.

Y ou can continue to use y our ReadyNAS system while the e xtra disks are incorporated in the backg round. The process of increasing data protection can tak e se v eral hours . If you set up email notifications f or your system, y ou receive an email message when the process finishes .
T o defragment a v olume: 1. Select System > V olumes . 2. Select the v olume that you w ant to defragment. 3. F rom the pop-up menu that displa ys, select Defra g . The defragmentation process star ts. The star t and completion of the volume defr agmentation are recorded in the system log (see System Logs on page 182).
3 Shared Folder s This chapter describes how to create, manage , and access shared f olders on the ReadyNAS. It includes the f ollowing sections: • Basic Shared F older Concepts • Manage Shared F .
Basic Shared Folder Concepts The v olumes on your ReadyNAS can be divided into shared f olders and logical unit numbers (LUNs), both of which are logical entities on one or more disks. Shared folders and LUNs enab le you to organize data in a v olume by type , group , user , depar tment, and so on.
• Accounting • Sales • P ersonnel Y ou can combine these schemes or come up with your o wn scheme . Shared Folder Defaults If you used ReadyCLOUD or the local setup wizard to configure y our Rea.
T able 6. Suppor ted file-sharing protocols Recommendation Description Protocol If Windows users access your storage system, enable this protocol. Used mainly by Microsoft Windows computers and sometimes by Mac OS X computers , this protocol is enabled b y default.
Managing Bit Rot Pr otection Bit rot protection protects your data from the g radual loss of reliab lity of disks as the y age. Y ou can verify if bit rot protection is tur ned on f or a f older , tur n it on, if it is not, or turn it off. Bit rot protection is on by def ault f or all f olders on your ReadyNAS.
A check indicates that bit rot protection is on. 6. If you w ant to change the setting, select or clear the chec k bo x. Home Directories Star ting in OS version 6.2, e very account on a ReadyNAS owns a private f older under the home f older . The content of your home f older is not visible to the other accounts on the ReadyNAS .
3. Configure the settings as e xplained in the f ollowing tab le: Description Item A unique name to identify the shared f older . Do not include spaces in the name. Name An optional description to help identify the shared folder . Description Select the Compression check bo x to enable data compression.
The new shared f older is added to the Shares screen. Basic inf or mation is displa yed to the right of the shared f older . Vie w and Change the Properties of a Shared Folder T o view and change the pr operties of a shared folder: 1. Select Shares > Shares .
Description Item Proper ties A unique name to identify the shared f older . Do not include spaces in the name. All characters must be alphanumeric. Name An optional description to help identify the shared folder . Description Select the Compression check bo x to enable data compression.
Y our changes are sav ed and the pop-up screen closes. Delete a Shared Folder W ARNING: Deleting a shared folder permanentl y remo ves the data within that shared folder , inc luding its snapshots. T o delete a shared folder fr om a v olume: 1. Select Shares > Shares .
2. Select the shared f older or subf older that y ou want to bro wse. The contents of the f older displa y . Use the f orward and bac k ( ) arrows to bro wse through f olders. Y ou can view files and f olders as a list with details, as small icons , or as large icons.

The indicator on the protocol button turns green. When you enab le a file-shar ing protocol f or an individual shared f older , the protocol is also enabled globally . For more inf or mation about global settings, see Configure Global Settings f or File-Sharing Protocols on page 163.
4. F rom the drop-do wn list, mak e one of the f ollo wing selections to specify the inf ormation that you want to view: • All . The def ault group Ev er yone and all groups that y ou configured on the local database or that were do wnloaded from the Activ e Director y ser ver are displa yed.

Y our changes are sav ed and the pop-up screen closes. Configure Host Settings F or SMB , NFS, FTP , Rsync, and HTTP , y ou can configure access rights for users on hosts .
5. Enter the host IP address in the IP address field. 6. Click the Ad d b utton. The host is added to the host access list. F or SMB , the access rights for each host depend on the access rights of the user .
4. Select the Enable P asswor d Protection check bo x. 5. Click the + b utton ( ) and create at least one Rsync user account and passw ord. Rsync credentials are completely separate from y our ReadyNAS storage system’ s user accounts. Note: 6. Click the Appl y b utton.
4. Select the Enable DFS Root chec k bo x. 5. Click the + b utton ( ) abov e the list of remote shared f olders. 6. In the pop-up screen that displa ys, enter the f ollowing inf ormation: • Name . The name of the remote shared f older , as you w ant it to appear on y our ReadyNAS.
T o configure adv anced settings for SMB: 1. On the f older settings pop-up screen, clic k the Network Access tab . 2. Click the SMB file-sharing protocol b utton. 3. Click the Ad v anced tab on the left side of the pop-up screen. 4. Select the Hide this folder chec k box.
4. Select the Enable W ebDA V check bo x. 5. Click the Appl y b utton. 6. Click the OK b utton. Y our changes are sav ed and the pop-up screen closes. Set Up Access Rights to Files and Folder s F or each individual shared f older , you can configure the def ault access r ights to files and f olders.
5. Configure the file and f older access rights as explained in the f ollowing tab le: Setting Item Y ou can assign a single user or the administrator as the f older owner . By default, the f older owner is set to guest. F older Owner Y ou can assign a single group , a single user , or the administrator as the f older group .
The shared f older settings displa y in a pop-up screen. 4. Click the File Access tab on the pop-up screen. 5. Click the Reset tab . 6. Click the Reset permissions b utton.
Use a W eb Br owser Y ou can use a web bro wser to access files that are stored on your ReadyNAS system. If you are accessing y our files from a networ k that is outside y our LAN, you m ust configure por t forw arding on y our router . F or more inf or mation, see your router user manual.
<hostname> is the name that you assigned to y our ReadyNAS system or the def ault host name if you did not change it. If you cannot access the ReadyNAS using its host name , tr y entering <ReadyNAS IP address> in the Windows Explore address bar instead.
In both cases, <hostname> is the name that y ou assigned to y our ReadyNAS system or the def ault host name if you did not change it. If you cannot access the ReadyNAS using its host name , try enter ing afp://<ReadyNAS IP ad dress> or smb://<ReadyNAS IP ad dress> instead.
• <user name> and <pass word> match the user name and pass word on the ReadyNAS . • <ReadyNAS IP address> is the IP address of the ReadyNAS. • <shared f older name> is the name of the shared f older that y ou want to access .
T o access shared folder s using Rsync: 1. Ensure that the Rsync file-sharing protocol is enabled on y our ReadyNAS storage system. F or more inf ormation, see Set Networ k Access Rights to Shared F olders on page 48. 2. On a network-attached de vice that suppor ts the Rsync file-shar ing protocol, launch a ter minal program or an Rsync client.
3. On the pop-up screen that displa ys, enter y our ReadyCLOUD account credentials. 4. Click the Join b utton. Y our system is added to ReadyCLOUD . The ReadyCLOUD account that you used to add y our system to ReadyCLOUD is automatically granted access to your system as the ReadyCLOUD admin.
When you g rant access to a ReadyCLOUD user , that user automatically gains access to your system from ReadyCLOUD and ReadyNAS Remote . Note: T o grant access to ReadyCLOUD user s: 1. Open a web bro wser and visit http://readycloud.netgear .com . 2. F rom the top menu bar , select Sign In near the top r ight cor ner of the screen.
5. Ne xt to the system to which y ou want to gr ant access, clic k the Invite User b utton. 6. In the pop-up screen that displa ys, enter the user name or email address of the ReadyCLOUD user that you w ant to add to y our system. 7. Click the Sear ch button.
T o delete a ReadyCLOUD user: 1. Open a web bro wser and visit http://readycloud.netgear .com . 2. F rom the top menu bar , select Sign In near the top r ight cor ner of the screen. 3. In the pop-up screen that displa ys, enter y our ReadyCLOUD account credentials and click the Sign In button.
The selected ReadyCLOUD user can no longer use his or her ReadyCLOUD account to access your ReadyNAS system. Manage P ermissions for ReadyCLOUD User s By def ault, when y ou grant access to ReadyCLOUD users, those users can vie w and edit shared folders on your ReadyNAS system.
4. F rom the top menu bar , select Access . The ReadyNAS systems that you added to ReadyCLOUD using this account are displa yed. Y ou can also set ReadyCLOUD per missions from the Browse screen. Note: 5. Select the shared f older that you w ant to configure.
• Read Only . The selected user or group is per mitted only to read files on the shared f older . • Read/Write . The selected user or group is permitted to read, edit, create, and delete files on the shared f older . Y ou can select the def ault group Ev er yone and set read-only or read/write access f or all ReadyCLOUD users.
Y ou are signed in to ReadyCLOUD . Y ou can now use the ReadyCLOUD web interf ace to access y our data and manage any systems that y ou added to y our ReadyCLOUD account.

Y our changes are sav ed and the pop-up screen closes. Add Read yNAS Remote Users After you enab le ReadyNAS Remote on your system, you can allo w other ReadyNAS Remote users to access your system using their ReadyNAS Remote accounts . F or more inf ormation about enabling ReadyNAS Remote on your system, see Enab le ReadyNAS Remote on page 73.
A pop-up screen displa ys. 4. Enter the email address of the ReadyNAS Remote user to whom you w ant to gr ant access. 5. Click the Sear ch button. One of the f ollowing screens displa ys: • If the email address is linked to a ReadyNAS Remote account, the account’ s user name displays in the search results list.
Remo ve ReadyNAS Remote User s When you remo v e a ReadyNAS Remote user , that user can no longer use his or her ReadyNAS Remote account to access your ReadyNAS system. T o remove a Read yNAS Remote user: 1. On the local admin page, clic k the Cloud tab .
T o install the ReadyNAS Remote c lient on remote devices: 1. Using the de vice from which you w ant to remotely access a ReadyNAS system, visit http://www .netgear .com/ReadyNAS-remote . 2. Download the appropriate client software f or your operating system and install it according to y our operating system’ s instructions.
A list of your ReadyNAS Remote de vices displays . 5. Click the system that y ou want to access. 6. Enter v alid ReadyNAS user or admin credentials. The credentials that you enter to access shared f olders on the system are different from your ReadyNAS Remote credentials .
6. Select the shared f olders y ou want to access and clic k the OK b utton. Y our shared f olders open in Finder . Y ou can now dr ag and drop files betw een y our Mac and y our ReadyNAS system as though you were on the ReadyNAS LAN.
T o enable ReadyDR OP: 1. Click the Cloud tab . 2. Set the On-Off slider so the slider shows the On position ne xt to ReadyDROP . The ReadyDROP service verifies that your Internet connection is working and that your de vice is online. ReadyDROP is enab led.
2. Enter your ReadyNAS Remote user name and pass word and click the Log in b utton. If you created a ReadyCLOUD account, y ou can use your ReadyCLOUD credentials to log in to ReadyDROP and ReadyNAS Remote . F or more inf or mation about ReadyCLOUD , see Discov er and Set Up Y our ReadyNAS on page 13.
The ReadyNAS Remote icon blinks while the de vice is connecting and displays as b lue when it is connected. 4. Right-click the Read yNAS Remote icon in the system tra y .
The contents of your ReadyDR OP folder displa y in Finder . Y ou can now add, delete , or edit files in the ReadyDR OP f older using the standard interf ace on your Mac de vice. Changes are synchronized with y our ReadyNAS system and all other ReadyDROP-enab led de vices.
4 LUNs This chapter describes how to create, manage , and access LUNs on the ReadyNAS. It includes the f ollowing sections: • Basic LUN Concepts • Manage LUNs • LUN Groups and Access Rights • Access LUN Groups from an iSCSI-Attached De vice Without a v olume, y ou cannot configure any LUNs .
Basic LUN Concepts The v olumes on your ReadyNAS can be divided into shares and logical unit n umbers (LUNs), both of which are logical entities on one or more disks. Shares and LUNs enable y ou to organize data in a volume by type , group , user , depar tment, and so on.
space that you specify when y ou create the LUN. Y ou cannot assign more storage space than the av ailable nonreser v ed storage space on the v olume. Default LUN Settings The f ollowing table e xplains the def ault settings of a LUN. Y ou can change these settings when you create or change the LUN.

A list of shared f olders and LUNs on each v olume displa ys. 2. Select the LUN that you w ant to e xpand. 3. F rom the pop-up menu that displa ys, select Settings . The LUN settings displa y in a pop-up screen. 4. Select the Expand link. The size e xpansion options display .
The new LUN siz e tak es eff ect. 7. Click the OK b utton. Y our changes are sav ed and the pop-up screen closes. 8. (Optional) Add the LUN to the LUN group to which it belonged bef ore the expansion. See Create a LUN Group on page 93. User access to the LUN is restored.
The LUN is deleted. LUN Gr oups and Access Rights When you create a LUN, the LUN is unassigned. T o access your storage system from an iSCSI-attached de vice, y ou must create a LUN group and assign one or more LUNs to the LUN group . LUN groups allo w you to organiz e LUNs and manage access rights to LUN groups.
The New LUN g roup is added to the iSCSI screen. By def ault, CHAP is disab led and no client is allowed to access the LUN g roup (see Manage Access Rights f or LUN Groups on page 96). Assign a LUN to a LUN Gr oup T o assign a LUN to a LUN group: 1. Select iSCSI .
Remo ve a LUN fr om a LUN Group T o remove a LUN fr om a LUN gr oup: 1. Select iSCSI . The iSCSI screen displa ys the LUNs and LUN groups that y ou created. 2. Select the assigned LUN that you w ant to remo ve from the g roup . 3. F rom the pop-up menu that displa ys, select Unassign .
3. Confir m that y ou want to delete the LUN group . If any LUNs w ere assigned to the group , they are returned to the unassigned state. Manage Access Rights f or LUN Gr oups This section cov ers configur ing LUN group access, adding and remo ving iSCSI initiators, and changing the CHAP pass word f or an iSCSI initiator .
3. Configure the settings as e xplained in the f ollowing tab le: Description Item The name is provided f or information only and cannot be changed. Name The target is the address that an iSCSI client (that is, an initiator) needs to access the LUN group .
Add an iSCSI Initiator T o add an iSCSI initiator and allow access to the LUN gr oup: 1. Select iSCSI . The iSCSI screen displa ys the LUNs and LUN groups that y ou created. 2. Click the Pr oper ties button to the right of the LUN group that y ou want to manage .
F or e xample, iqn.2012-04.com.netgear:sj-tst-5200:a123b456 is a valid IQN. 6. (Optional) Enter a CHAP pass word that is betw een 12 and 16 characters long and confirm the CHAP pass word. 7. Click the Create b utton. The IQN is added to the list of initiators on the LUN Group Proper ties pop-up screen.
3. Select the Selected radio b utton ne xt to Allow ed Initiators. 4. Select the initiator that you w ant to remo ve from the list. 5. Click the – b utton ( ) to the right of the list of initiators. 6. Confir m that y ou want to remote the selected initiator .
3. Select the Selected radio b utton ne xt to Allow ed Initiators. 4. Select the initiator that you w ant to edit from the list. 5. Click the gear b utton ( ) to the right of the list of initiators. The Initiator Settings pop-up screen displa ys. 6. Enter a new pass word in the fields.
Unlike snapshots that reside on a share , snapshots that reside on a LUN are not visib le to users. For inf or mation about how to reco ver data using a snapshot on a LUN, see Recov er Data from a Snapshot to an iSCSI-Attached Device on page 128. Basic Snapshot Concepts The ReadyNAS can provide protection of shared f olders and LUNs through snapshots. Snapshots contain ref erences to data on a shared f older or LUN. Str ictly speaking, snapshots are not backups , but the y function as backups because y ou can recover data from snapshots .
Smar t Snapshot Management The ReadyNAS OS 6.1 uses Smar t Snapshot Management to reduce the number of automatic (continuous) snapshots per shared f older or LUN. Ever y hour , this f eature automatically prunes older hour ly , daily , and weekly snapshots , according to the f ollowing rules: • Hourly snapshots are kept f or 48 hours .

Y ou can use the tabs and arrows at the bottom of the screen to bro wse snapshots b y year , month, day , or hour . Tip: 4. • Use the arrow b uttons to the left and right of the timeline as needed to mov e f orward in time (right arrow b utton) or bac k in time (left arrow b utton) in time. Click the cloc k icon ( ) that is located in the middle of the Snapshot screen under the name of the selected f older or LUN.

Basic User and Gr oup Concepts Users are the people to whom you g rant access to y our storage system. If your compan y uses Windows Activ e Director y , you can use that to manage ReadyNAS users. Otherwise, when y ou want to allo w someone to access your ReadyNAS system, y ou create a user account for that person.

Use these guidelines to deter mine a user’ s group membership status: • If the check bo x next to a user is selected and can be cleared, that user is a secondary member of the group . • If the check bo x next to a user is selected and cannot be cleared, that user is a primar y member of the group .
4. Confir m the deletion. The group is deleted. Cloud User s Cloud users are users who can access your system using ReadyCLOUD or ReadyNAS Remote . ReadyCLOUD and ReadyNAS Remote are free cloud-based ser vices that allow users to securely access your system from an ywhere that has an Internet connection.
Cloud User Access Rights When you g rant access to ReadyCLOUD users , those users can access your ReadyNAS system using ReadyCLOUD and ReadyNAS Remote. Y ou use the ReadyCLOUD web por tal to configure access r ights f or users accessing y our system from ReadyCLOUD .
7 System Settings This chapter describes how to configure the basic settings of the ReadyNAS. It contains the f ollowing sections: • Customize the Basic System Settings • Configure the Network Set.
Customize the Basic System Settings NETGEAR recommends that you configure the basic system settings that are described in this section bef ore y ou use the ReadyNAS. Set the Cloc k T o enable the ReadyNAS to time-stamp files correctly , ensure that the time and date settings are accurate.
Y our changes are sav ed. Select the Language T o make sure that the ReadyNAS correctly displa ys file names, configure the system to use the appropriate character set. For e xample, selecting Japanese allo ws the ReadyNAS to suppor t files with Japanese names in Windows Explorer .
T o change the administrator passw ord: 1. On the navigation bar of the local admin page , select Profile . 2. F rom the drop-down menu that displa ys, select Settings. The Change Admin P assword pop-up screen displa ys. 3. Configure the settings as e xplained in the f ollowing tab le: Description Item Enter a new administr ator pass word.

5. Configure the email sender settings as e xplained in the f ollowing tab le. When the storage system sends email aler ts, it sends them from the account that you enter here .

3. In the Name field, enter a new host name . In most non-Asian character sets , the host name can hav e a maximum of 15 characters, can only include A-Z, a-z, 0-9, and _, and the first character must be alphabetic. If you use Asian language characters , the limit is lower .
The indicator on the Antivirus button turns green and the antivir us software is enab led. Configure the Netw ork Settings This section cov ers basic netw orking concepts and the configurable network settings on y our ReadyNAS storage system. Netw ork Basic Concepts The acronym NAS in ReadyNAS is shor t f or network-attached storage .
Ethernet Y our ReadyNAS storage system uses Ethernet technology to transf er inf or mation on y our local area network. Ether net technology divides data into smaller pieces, called pac k ets or frames , bef ore transmitting it on your netw ork. Ether net technology includes methods to check f or data transmission errors.

System Monitoring The local admin page f or y our ReadyNAS system provides system and disk health inf ormation as well as system logs. Real-time histor ical monitoring is av ailab le f or most models. Y ou can also enable the SNMP protocol to remotely monitor your ReadyNAS system using an SNMP client.
The range is fle xible and depends on your selections from the drop-do wn lists above the g raphic. For e xample, the r ange can be from 0 to 200 operations . The upper par t of the graphic indicates the number of read operations (indicated b y positiv e numbers).
• Network . Select all network interfaces , individual interf aces, or individual bonds. • Protocol . Select all protocols or individual protocols (SMB, NFS , AFP , HTTP , HTTPS, SSH, iSCSI, or SMTP). • P eriod . Select the period ov er which the network usage is measured.
• T emperature . Select all temperatures , the system (SYS) temperature , the CPU temperature , or the auxiliar y (A UX) temperature. • P eriod . Select the period ov er which the temperatures are measured. Y ou can select from 5 minutes to 1 year .
2. T o view additional messages, use the na vigation bo x in the lower left corner of the screen. 3. Do any of the f ollowing: • Download the logs . Click the Do wnload Logs button to do wnload a zipped file with all log files to your bro wser’ s def ault download location.

If you enab led email aler ts, y our ReadyNAS system sends a message when the fir mware update finishes. Reset the Firmware to F actory Defaults W ARNING: Resetting the ReadyNAS to factory defaults deletes not only the configuration but also all stored data.

Y our changes are sav ed. Enable W ake-on-LAN W ake-on-LAN is a wa y to remotely power up a netw ork-attached device , like a computer or stor age system. This f eature allows y ou to conser ve pow er b y keeping a de vice tur ned off when it is not needed, but allo ws a remote system to turn it on when it is needed.
Set or Change Disk Spin-Down Allowing disks to slo w or spin down when not being activ ely used can potentially sav e pow er and e xtend the lif e of the disks, b ut this can also slow eff ective read/write speeds and can mak e the disks appear to be off-line or cause time outs.
Use the calendar to set the da ys and times in which spin-down is activ e. Y ou can set, and the ReadyNAS ser v er will remember , calendar settings whether spin-down is enab led or not. Optional Uninterruptible P ower Supplies Y our ReadyNAS system suppor ts the use of optional uninterr uptible po wer supply (UPS) devices .
UPS Configurations The ReadyNAS suppor ts UPS devices managed o v er SNMP and UPS de vices managed ov er a remote connection. UPS Devices Mana ged over SNMP An SNMP UPS lets the ReadyNAS quer y the manuf acturer-specific Management Information Base (MIB).

9 Bac kup and Reco very If your data is important enough to store, it is impor tant enough to back up . Data can be lost due to a number of e v ents, including natur al disaster (f or e xample, fire or flood), theft, improper data deletion, and hard driv e f ailure.
Bac k Up or Restore System Configuration In addition to backing up data, y ou can back up and restore your system configur ation settings. The backup configuration file can also sa v e your shared f older access settings, ser vice settings, local users and g roups, network settings, and more .
The system configuration settings are restored according to the bac kup file that y ou selected. Basic Data Bac kup and Reco ver y Concepts Y our ReadyNAS system can manage backup and reco v er y f or many de vices on your network.
An incremental backup copies only the data that changed since y our last backup process . An incremental backup job tak es much less time than a full backup job . RAID configuration of disks is not a substitute f or backing up data. RAID configuration protects you only from data loss if a disk f ails.
