Page 1-10 Chapter 1 — Quick Start Bridge External Port AUI This A UI por t is the e xter nal port for the bridge (not the hub), which is used to connect the bridg e to a segment in your net- wor k. The actual connection should be made using a MA U with the appropriate network media connector .

This is a ver y simple installation guide designed to g et your AsantéBridge up and running with minimum ef f or t.

W e recommend that you use a Macintosh or PC with AsantéVie w 2.2 networ k mana g ement software installed, although you can use an y device that nor mally connects to and communicates ov er your Ethernet net- work .
Page 1-15 Installing the AsantéBridge 1012 Positioning the AsantéBridge 1012 The AsantéBridge can be positioned on any flat surf ace (a desktop, table, or other wor k surf ace), or it can be mounted on a wall or in a rack. There are a f ew guidelines that should be f ollowed: ❏ Place the unit within six feet of an A C outlet.

Page 2-5 About Bridging The transparent bridg e shown here ser ves to isolate the tw o seg- ments: Networ k traffic meant only f or devices on segment A is lim- ited to the backbone serving segment A. These packets are not passed across the bridge. T raf fic on segment B is also restricted to that segment.

This method is called an in-band daisychain and of fers an economical wa y to connect hubs tog ether .

Page 2-14 Chapter 2 — Connecting to the Network One of the most common reasons f or a loss of netw ork services is damage to, or f ailure of, cabling inter connections.
Page 2-15 Configuring a Redundant Link BNC: According to the priority scheme described a bove, BNC will not be the active uplink if either an A UI or 10T connection exists. Due to this ordering, if BNC is selected, it is assumed that this medium is the only type av ailable.

F igure 2-10 shows the three w ays that you can connect your Asanté Mana g ement Station for out-of-band manag ement.
Page 2-19 Setting Up Out-of-Band Links Recommended Method The recommended method f or connecting for out-of-band man- agement is with the AMS Link Extender included with y our AsantéBridge 1012. 1 Connect the RJ45 connector on the AMS Link Extender to the AMS Link Port on the rear panel of the AsantéBr idg e 1012 as shown in F igure 2-11 .
Page 2-20 Chapter 2 — Connecting to the Network There are tw o DIP switc hes located to the right of the AMS Link ports on the rear panel of the AsantéBr idg e 1012. These two switc hes are set up according to ho w the AsantéBr idge is posi- tioned in the out-of-band daisychain and ho w you are connecting your Asanté Mana g ement Station.
Page 2-21 Connecting a VT100 T erminal The bridge can be configured and monitor ed through a direct serial connection to the br idge RS232 port on the rear of the bridge unit. The bridge functions as a DCE; the terminal must be DTE. Y ou must use an RS232 straight-through serial cable to connect the bridge serial por t to your Macintosh or PC.

Page 3-2 Chapter 3 — AsantéBridge 1012 Local Management The AsantéBridge 1012 can automatically integ r ate itself into y our networ k environment without any prog ramming or other user inter vention other than connecting to tw o networ k segments and pow er ing it on.
Page 3-3 Bridge Diagnostics The AsantéBridge 1012 is equipped with on-board diagnostics that run when the br idge is po wered on (cold start) or when reset, either from the front panel or with the Reset system command from the local management Configuration Menu .
Page 3-4 Chapter 3 — AsantéBridge 1012 Local Management All AsantéBridge 1012 functions can be configured using a VT100 terminal (or a Macintosh or PC r unning VT100 ter minal emulation software).
Page 3-5 Local Management Menu System 2 T o disconnect from the AsantéBridge 1012, use the appro- priate VT100 command. This command may vary depend- ing upon what terminal emulation software you ar e using. Please see the documentation accompanying y our emula- tion software f or instructions.
Page 3-6 Chapter 3 — AsantéBridge 1012 Local Management The AsantéBridge 1012 VT100 local management port uses a vari- ety of control c haracter s (special keyboard characters) to control editing on screen. This help screen tells what editing commands are available and what they do.

Here, input port ref er s to the segment the transmitting device is on, and output port ref ers to the segment the packet is forwar ded to.

The bridge reads the source address contained in the packets and writes that address into the table as a dynamic entr y with a ta g associating it with the segment it was receiv ed on.

Each parameter set contains thr ee rang es and an ON/OFF switc h.
