Second line : Normally , nothing is displayed. Howe ver , one of the warning messages listed belo w may be displayed when needed.

Proceed key Press the Proceed ke y to resume printing after an interruption. This key is pressed: - when a paper size error (LOAD message) occurs.

2-1 Chapter 2 Setting Up Selecting a Location f or the Printer A proper location helps t o ensure that your printer provides you with the long service life for which i t is designed. Double check to m ake sure that the location you select has the follo wing characteristics.
2-2 Chapter 2 Setting Up NO TES • Use a power source with minimal v oltage and frequenc y fluctu - ation. • Only use an outlet that is rated for the voltage capacity specif ied for this printer . • Be sure to plug the power cord all the way into the outlet.

2-4 Chapter 2 Setting Up Operating En vironment The following describes the operat ing en vironment required when using the printer . T emperature: 50°F to 95°F (10°C to 35°C) with a fluctuation of 50°F (10°C) per hour . Humidity: 15% to 85% RH wi th a fluctuation of 20% per hou r .

The inte - rior of the printer contains high-voltage circuitry which creates the danger of electric shock when e xposed. • Ne ver try to modify the printer . 2-6 Chapter 2 Setting Up Printer Supplies Note the following precautions wh en handling the printer supplies such as the imaging cartridge and paper . • A void storing the supplies in the following locations. Areas subjected to direct sunlig ht. K eep the imaging cartridge away from fluorescent light as well.
2-7 Chapter 2 Setting Up Set up your printer according to the follo wing procedure. NO TES - Keep all the boxes and packing materials that the printer comes in for later use when transporting the printer . - Since the printer weighs appro ximately 55.
2-8 Chapter 2 Setting Up 4. Pull th e tab outward slowly until the sealing tape is completely remov ed. 5. Shake the imaging cartridge 4 or 5 times in the direction of the arrows to distrib ute the toner even l y .
2-9 Chapter 2 Setting Up Connect the po wer cord accordin g to the follo wing procedure. 1. Make sure that the power switch of the printer is placed in the ❍ (OFF) position . 2. Plug one end of the power cord into the printer’ s power cord socket and plug the other end of the power cord into the po wer outlet.
2-10 Chapter 2 Setting Up T urning the Printer ON Press the po wer switch to the (ON) position. This printer will automatically go into power sav e mode a giv en period of time after th e last activ - ity . See “System Menu” page 3-12. When you t urn the printer o n, the following takes place.

3-1 Chapter 3 Using Y our Printer The control pane l allows you to control most of th e printing optio ns. If you use your software to control print jobs, you do not have to change the control panel settings repeatedly . Any softw are setting will override the control panel settings.

3-6 Chapter 3 Using Y our Printer Printer Menus The printer has six standard menus and two optional menus that allow you to conf igure the printer . Some of the items or v alues ar e displayed only when a specific option is installed. Other items or values may only be effecti ve for a particular printer language.

ORIENT A TION Selects the direction of the print on the pag e. Portrait orien tation means the page is tal l er than it is wide when you view the printed text upright.
3-9 Chapter 3 Using Y our Printer FINEART : Smooths the jagged edges of the printed image. More ef fectiv e when printing at 600 dpi. T ONER SA VE : T oner Sav e allows you to use less toner when printing. T ONER DENSITY Selects the density of the toner applied to the page.
3-10 Chapter 3 Using Y our Printer (2) PCL Menu FONT NUMBER Font Number is the number you us e to select a font from the con - trol panel. PITCH Pitch is the number of characters printed per ho rizontal inch . This setting is for a mono-s pace scalable font.
3-11 Chapter 3 Using Y our Printer (3) PS Menu This item app ears only w hen PostScript i s installed. JAM RECO VER When Jam Reco ver is set to OFF , the printer does not reprint a page that has misfed.
3-12 Chapter 3 Using Y our Printer (4) System Menu L A N G UAG E The printer language defines ho w the computer communicates with the printer . If you select A U TO, the printer languag e will be switched automatically . Ho wev er , neither PS nor A UTO will appear if PostScript is not in st alled.
3-13 Chapter 3 Using Y our Printer A UTO CONTINUE When a recov erable error has occu rred, set the length of time that the printer takes to return to the on-line state automaticall y . 3-14 Chapter 3 Using Y our Printer (5) P arallel Menu IO BUFFER SIZE Selects the recei ving buf fer size. If A UTO is selected, the printer automatically sets the buf fer size depending on the amount of memory carried in the printer . HIGH SPEED Sets whether it transfers data at high speed.
3-15 Chapter 3 Using Y our Printer TIMING Sets the timing of “Busy to Ack” in the communication format between the printer and PC. Basically , you don’t need to change the setting. Howe ver , dep ending on the PC you are using, it may not be able to support a proper communicatio n between the printer and PC.
3-16 Chapter 3 Using Y our Printer (6) Maintenance Menu DISPLA Y LANGU A GE The Display Language settin g determines the language of the text that appears on the control panel. The settin g becom es effecti ve by restarting th e printe r after making changes.
3-17 Chapter 3 Using Y our Printer (7) Network Menu This item appears only when the opt ional network card is installed. Using the software utility av ailable with the optional network card enables making of the settings in detail . For details, see th e manual for the network card.

At this time, the paper source is selected in the priority or der of tray 2, tray 3 and tray 1.
3-36 Chapter 3 Using Y our Pr inter Using Manual Feed Using manual feed is useful when you temporari ly want to print on paper that is not loaded in any tr ay . The manual feed feature allo ws you to print on custom sizes of paper, en velopes, labels and trans - parencies.
3-37 Chapter 3 Using Y our Pr inter Special P aper T ray Setting When you load special paper in the tray , it can be specif ied as the special paper tray so that the ot her users will not use the special paper by mistake. 1. Press the On Line key to tak e the printer off-line.
3-38 Chapter 3 Using Y our Pr inter There are three sources to print from: tray 1, tray 2 and tray 3. Select the printing source according to your needs. 1. Open tray 1. 2. Load paper in tray 1, tray 2 or tray 3. → See “Loading Paper in T r ay 1” page 3-29.
3-39 Chapter 3 Using Y our Pr inter 4. Send a pr int command fr om the computer . The printed paper is fed out f ace down on the paper exit tray . The paper exit tray can hold a maximum of 500 sheets of paper . Use care not to exceed this limit when making multiple pri nts.

Y o ur printer can store a v ariety of different fonts in its memory for printing. Since th ese f onts resid e in printer mem - ory , they are called r esident fonts .

4-1 Chapter 4 Maintaining Y our Printer The following table lists the appr oximate replacement interv al for each supplies. * Approximate A4-size page count based on 5% coverage of toner . If the abov e problems occur after showing the MAINTENANCE REQ message, it is time to replace th e supplies.
4-2 Chapter 4 Maintaining Y our Printer The imaging cartridge contains the pr int dr um and a suppl y of toner . If you print typical business A4 size page with 5% co verage of toner , the imaging cartridge last s approximately 10,0 00 pages. How - ev er , the life of the imaging cartridge varies with the density of toner for your pages.
4-3 Chapter 4 Maintaining Y our Printer 3. Pressing the upper cover lock release button, open the upper cov er . 4. Remove the old imaging car - tridge from the printer . 5. T ake a ne w im aging cartridge out of the box. Holding it with both hands, shake it well in the direction of the arro ws.
4-4 Chapter 4 Maintaining Y our Printer 7. Shake the imaging cartridge 4 or 5 times in the direction of the arrows to distrib ute the toner even l y . 8. Install the imaging cartridge securely into th e pr in ter by slid - ing the pins on each side of the cartridge along the grooves of the cartridge guide.
4-5 Chapter 4 Maintaining Y our Printer Accumulated dust and lint on the in side and outside of the printer impairs printer performance and print quality . Clean th e printer at regula r int erv als. NO TE Before starting the cleaning pr ocedure, be sure to turn the po wer switch off and unplug the po wer cord.

5-1 Chapter 5 Solving Printer Problems When a paper misfeed occurs in the printer , remov e the misfed paper according to the follo wing procedures. The fusing section has become quite hot during operation. Do not touch t he area as it ma y cause a burn.

When insta lling the R O M-DIMM, the printer can function as a PostScript printer . The Hard Disk that is installed with the Adob e PostScript ROM-DIMM is used for downloading av ailable PostScript fonts.

6-9 Chapter 6 Installing Options 7. Install the Hard Disk and tighten the four screws. (Use a plus screwdri ver .) 8. Connect the Hard Disk cable to the Hard Disk connector on the controller board. The Hard Disk can be installed only when the Adobe PostScript R O M-DIMM is installed.
