The Dimâge Scan Elite F-2900 is a dual f or mat film scanner capable of scanning 35mm and with the optional AD-10 APS Adapter , Adv anced Photo System film. 8 Setting the SCSI ID T ur n off the computer and all the devices in the SCSI chain bef ore changing SCSI IDs, connecting, or disconnecting SCSI cables . Hardware damage ma y occur if this precaution is not f ollow ed. SETTING THE SCSI ID A SCSI ID is a unique address you assign to each SCSI de vice connected to your computer .

LO ADING THE FILM HOLDER 22 2. Place the film in the film holder emulsion side up. • The film holder will accept film strips up to 6 frames long. • Brush dust off the film before placing it into the film holder .
LO ADING THE FILM HOLDER 23 Loading the Slide Holder Do not scan glass mounted slides. Glass mounts bend the light from the line scanner , producing bad results. 1. Inser t slides into the slide holder em ulsion side up. • Brush dust off the the slide before placing it into the film holder .
INSERTING THE FILM HOLDER INT O THE SCANNER 24 The white mark should be upright. The notches in the film and slide holders identify the position of the scanning windows . Push the holder all the wa y in to scan the last fr ame on that side of the film holder .
25 Setting the Film T ype 1. Select 35mm from the film f ormat drop-do wn list. • The Previe w window appears . 2. Select the film type from the film type drop-do wn list. 3. Click on in the Main windo w . The previe wed image will appear in the Previe w windo w .
26 The Previe w windo w par t — Name of parts Pre viewing creates a scan of the image that y ou can apply and vie w color , contrast, or ientation,and brightness corrections before clic king on the Scan b utton. This ensures that the final scan will be the best it can be.
27 A UT O-EXPOSURE LOCK Especially useful when scanning brac keted e xposures, AE ( auto e xposure) loc k lets you scan multiple images with the same initial e xposure settings . AE Loc k sav es the automatic e xposure settings deter mined when an image is pre vie wed.
28 AE AREA LOCK The area used by the auto e xposure algor ithm can be adjusted so that only the selected area is taken into account b y AE. P erform the procedure below after pre viewing the image . 2. Press the Shift key . • The AE area is indicated by a line instead of the cropping area which is indicated by a dashed line .
29 ORIENTING THE IMA GE Click on the and buttons to correct the orientation of y our image bef ore scanning. Changes will be reflected in the pre view image . Rotate Click on to rotate the image 90° c loc kwise . Click on to rotate the image 90° counter -c lockwise.

Click inside the cr opping frame, then drag the cropping frame to its ne w location.

Click an ywhere on the image to zoom in. • The click ed position will be the center of the magnified view . • The + disappears from the magnifier icon when the maximum image magnification has been reached. Use the zoom b utton to increase or reduce the image magnification.

The Image correction window part — Name of par ts This scanner giv es you three options f or correcting the brightness, contr ast, and color balance of the final scan.
35 IMA GE CORRECTION – T ONE CUR VES/HIST OGRAM Click on in the Image Correction window . When the T one cur ves/Histogr am Correction button is clic k ed, the T one Cur ves/Histog ram Correction dialog bo x is displa yed. The T one Cur ves dialog bo x allows y ou to change the tone curves and to directly correct the output v alue.
36 IMA GE CORRECTION – T ONE CUR VES/HIST OGRAM Changing the shape of a correction cur ve changes the output le vel f or each corresponding input le v el. Changing the shape of the red, green, or blue curves aff ects color balance of the image. Changes to the RGB cur ve aff ect the image contrast and br ightness.

Setting the White Point 38 IMA GE CORRECTION – T ONE CUR VES/HIST OGRAM 1. Double-c lick the Blac k P oint button. • The P oint V alue dialog is displa yed. 2. Input the desired blac k point value. 3. Click the Blac k P oint button. • The cursor changes to the blac k dropper shape.
39 IMA GE CORRECTION – T ONE CUR VES/HIST OGRAM 1. Click the Gra y P oint button. • The cursor changes to the gra y dropper shape. 2. Click the point to be c hanged to gray in the ima ge . • The image is corrected so that the point you click ed is the gra y point.
40 IMA GE CORRECTION — BRIGHTNESS/CONTRAST/COLOR BALANCE When the Brightness/Contrast/Color Balance Correction button is clic k ed, the Brightness/Contrast/Color Balance Correction window is displa y ed. The images can be corrected by dr agging the slider or inputting the desired v alue in the te xt bo x.
41 1. Drag each Brightness, Contrast or Color balance slider or input the desired value in the te xt bo x. • The change will be reflected in the previe w image. • Moving the Brightness, Contrast or Color balance slider changes “P ost- Correction Gra y Scale” and “P ost-Correction LUT”.
42 IMA GE CORRECTION — HUE/SA TURA TION/LIGHTNESS When the Hue/Saturation/Lightness Correction b utton is click ed, the Hue/Saturation/Lightness Correction window is displa y ed. The images can be corrected by dr agging the slider or inputting the desired v alue in the te xt bo x.
43 A uto setting When the A uto setting button is clic k ed, the saturation of the image is corrected automatically without changing the hue and lightness. IMA GE CORRECTION — HUE/SA TURA TION/LIGHTNESS Reset If you clic k the Reset b utton, the settings in the current correction window are reset.
44 Selecting the Correction Item Y ou can select from colour balance, brightness, contrast and satur ation as the correction item to be used in the v ariation correction. Howe v er , colour balance and saturation are not av ailable when using monochrome film.
45 IMA GE CORRECTION — V ARIA TION CORRECTION Color Balance Correction The 6 images that hav e been corrected b y one-step in each RGBCMY direction f or the center image are displa yed. 1. Click the colour balance. • The corrected 6 frames of v ariation images are display ed.
46 Saturation Correction The 2 images of which saturation has been corrected on the right and left sides of the center image are displa yed . The variation image on the left side shows lo wer eff ect, and on the right side shows higher eff ect.
47 IMA GE CORRECTION — SNAPSHO T When the Snapshot button is clic k ed, the current pre view image is stored in the Snapshot Displa y Area temporarily and displa yed as a thumbnail. When the thumbnail in the Snapshot Displa y Area is double-clic k ed, that image is displa yed in the pre view windo w .
48 Full-Screen View This function allows y ou to displa y full screen the vie w of the corrected image in the image correction window . 1. Click the Full-Screen View b utton.
49 IMA GE CORRECTION — JOB SA VE/JOB LO AD Saving Ima ge Correction Job 2. Input the job name and clic k on the OK b utton. • The current image correction setting is sav ed as an image correction job . The image correction setting in each correction window can be sav ed as an image correction job .
50 IMA GE CORRECTION — JOB SA VE/JOB LO AD 1. Click on the Ima ge Correction Job Load button in the correction window . • The Image Correction Job List window is displa yed. Loading Image Correction Job This function allows y ou to load the sa ved correction job and apply an image correction to the displa yed image .
51 NA VIGA TION The Navigation windo w allows you to automat the procedure of scanning. When the Navigation button is clic k ed in the Main window , the navigation windo w is displa y ed.

57 PREFERENCES – APS SETTINGS Index Scan Priority Speed – Creates a thumbnail representation of each frame on the roll. Quality – Thumbnail and Previe w images are created f or each frame on the roll. • Double-clic king on the inde x image opens the ready-made previe w image.
58 APS AD APTER (OPTIONAL) The AD-10 APS Adapter is an optional accessor y . The Dimâge Scan Elite can not scan Adv anced Photo System film (IX-240 type) without the AD-10 APS Adapter . Names of P arts Loading the APS Adapter 1. Slide the film-chamber release as shown.

Inde x scan displa ys a scan of each image on the cassette in the inde x scan window . The time required f or an inde x scan depends on the perf ormance of your machine. If you don’t w ant to inde x scan the entire roll, select the frame n umber of the image you w ant to scan from the inde x print provided by y our photofinisher .
61 INDEX SCAN Click on in the Main window . • All frames on the cassette will be scanned and appear in the Inde x window . • T o cancel the index scan, press the escape ke y ( -• Command and period for the Macintosh) until the Cancelling Inde x Scan message box appears.
62 INDEX SCAN Index scan Change the size of the Inde x scan windo w as desired. The position of the frames will change accordingly . Click on the corner tab and dra g to reach the desired size . • When the Full-Screen Vie w button is not clic ked, the siz e and shape of the inde x frames does not change.
63 PREVIEW AND IMA GE CORRECTION 1. Click on an ima ge or an image box, then clic k on . The image will be prescanned, then opened in the Previe w window . 5. Close the Previe w window to return to the Inde x window . • Adjustments made in the Previe w window are held until the image is scanned or the driver software is closed.
64 SCANNING THE IMA GE Selecting Frames 1. Click on an ima ge to select it for scanning. • Selected images are surrounded by a dark gra y frame . 2. Click on to scan the selected image(s). • The scan is cancelled if more than the number of frames selected is greater than the Max # of F r ames set in the Preferences dialog bo x.

68 COLOR MA TCHING This function allows y ou to match the scanner data to the monitor type (colour space). The output colour space and ICC profile can be specified by using the colour matching function. T o match the scanner data to the colour space, specify the output colour space.

SCAN SETTINGS 71 Image resolution is the number of pix els per inch (ppi or dpi) that represent y our scanned image. The size of an image file is determined by its siz e (dimensions) and resolution. The rule to follo w when scanning is "bigger is better".
72 SCAN SETTINGS 4. Enter the desired output resolution from the output resolution drop-do wn list. • V alues can also be entered into the output resolution list box directly . • The output resolution cannot be changed when the unit list box is set to pix els.

74 SCAN JOB TYPE Bef ore making the final scan, the scanner needs to know ho w big the final image will be and the quality of output that will be used (printer , monitor , etc.) so it knows what resolution to scan the film. Using the Job function is a quic k and easy wa y to enter the scan settings .

78 GLOSSAR Y BRIGHTNESS The lightness or darkness of the image. CHANNEL The component of an image. Y our scanned image has three channels: red, green, and b lue (RGB). CONTRAST The gradation of shades in an image . A high contrast image has v er y dark areas and br ight areas without many middle shades.
GLOSSAR Y 79 RESAMPLE T o change the number of pix els in the image . If pixels are discarded when shrinking an image, it is called resampling down.
