Chapter 2 Pl anning y our Ne twork Before y ou install y our MIL- S1000, you shoul d review the guideli nes for setting up Ether net networ ks. Further , you should pl an your networ k to take max imu m advantage o f its switching capabilities.
100Base-TX Ethernet Network Guide lines # The max imum l ength of a 100Base- TX cable seg ment is 100 me ters (32 8 feet). # The maximu m number of hubs o n a 100Base- TX segment is one if usi ng Class I hubs and tw o if using Class II hubs. # Th e recommen ded cable ty pe is E IA/TIA Cat egory 5 unshielded tw isted- pair .
1000BASE-SX and L X Network Guideline 1000BASE- SX # In multi-mo de, th e fiber opti c segme nt cannot exceed 220m(62 .5/125 µ m) or 50 0m(50/1 25 µ m) in leng th. 1000BASE- LX # In multi-mo de, th e fiber opti c segme nt cannot exceed 550m(62 .5/125 µ m), 550m( 50/125 µ m) in length.
T o expand your netw ork topolog y or enhance netw ork performanc e, use t he MIL-S10 00 as collapsed back bone or to increas e file ser ver perfor mance, to segment large networks, to i ntercon nect 10Mbps n etworks w ith 100Mbps networks, or to ov ercome the limi tations of 10Base- T and 100Base- TX networks.
100Base-TX N etworks The hub li mit of a 1 00Base-TX networ k depends on the class of the hub in the n etwork. W it h a Class I h ub, the network is limited t o one hub. W ith a Class II hub, the network is limited t o two hu bs. Howev er , you can ex pand your 1 00Base-TX netw ork that includes either class of hub by adding a MIL-S100 0.
Collapsed Backbone Link T raditi onally , bridg es and rou ters hav e been used to link local ar ea ne tworks into one int erconnect ed netw ork. But these dev ices inv olv e dif ficult ma nagement a nd long traf fic delays.
Figure 2-3. MIL-S1000 100/1000 Hub in a collapsed backbone link Fileserver Link 100Base Solution W it h a fileserver link, you can increas e file ser ver performanc e by i ncreasing th e Hub's ba ndwidth b etween one or m ore files ervers and th e work groups they serve.
Figure 2-4. Fileserver Link Connecti ng serv ers through 10 0Base-TX p orts increases performanc e to the clients, ev en i f the clients ar e on 10Base-T seg ments.
1000Base Solution Y ou can upg rade y our serv er with a Gi gabit Ether net NIC, and i ntroduce a Gig abit backbone swit ch too. This contains several sw itch ports w hich prov ides much faster access to y our server with minim um disrup tion. See Figur e 16.
Figure 2-5. Used as a Multiport Bridge Using your hub, y ou can also c onnect 10B ase-T networ ks and 100Bas e-TX an d 1000Bas e-SX/LX networks together for more flexibility in your netw ork topology .
Chapter 3 Instal latio n The MIL-S1000 can be installed quickly and easily . However , for an installation with minimum impact on the exist ing network, please r ead thi s chapter caref ully . Installing a MIL-S1000 in volves three step s: 1. Choosing a loc ation 2.

The MIL-S 1000 sw itch is eq uipped w ith a univer sal switchi ng power supply that accepts AC i nput vol tages from 100 to 240V AC and 5 0 to 60 H z. T o supply pow er to your switch: 1. Plug the c onnector of the pow er cord int o the pow er port on the re ar panel o f your switch.
Connecting the Swit ch Y ou can con nect your sw itch to network dev ices such as desktops and w orkgr oups or to ot her hubs. Before con necting y our switch to a desktop or wor kgroup make sure that: # The 10Bas e-T tw isted pair Et hernet cabling is Category 3 or abov e.
Chapter 4. M odule Install ation and Removal W ARNING Before installing the Modules into a MIL-S1000, you must disconnect the Switch from the main power supply .
Module Setup and Installation 1. Ensure that th e Switch i s disconnect ed from th e main power supply and tha t you are w earing an anti- static wrist- band connected to a suit able g rounding p oint. 2. Place t he Sw itch on a fl at sur face. Using a s mall cross- bladed scr ewdriv er , remove the blanking plate from the rear of t he Swi tch.
Installing the Module s Installing 10/100B ase-TX Modules a. Insert t he RJ- 45 con nector o n your cabl e into the socket of t he Modu le. b. C onnect the o ther end of the cable to an appropriat e devic e wi th a 100Mbps Fast Ethernet or 10Mbps Ethernet tw isted pai r inter face.
