Adding detergent Detergent should be added to compar t- ment j at the be ginning of each wash cycle. Miele re commends th e use of low-suds- ing detergen ts, as their characte ristics allow them to perfor m better in front- loading machines than regular powder or liquid detergents.
Adding fabric softener or star ch If fabric s oftener is desired, it will wor k more ef fectively and be gentler on the clothes if it is dispensed in the final rinse cycle of the wash, rath er than in the tumble dryer through the use of sof- tener sheets.
Pr ogrammes The run time of front-loading machine s is longer than that fo r most top-loading, ver- tical tub mach ines. This is because front-loading machines balance the 5 ba sic washing factors (mechanical acti on, water , detergent, temperature and time) dif- fently than do ver tical tub machine s.
PERMANENT PRESS For cotton blend fabric s, polyester blends and other synthetic s such as ac- rylic, nylon and ramie. 1) W ater levels used: wash - low rinse - high (to reduce wrinkling) 2) Rins e cyc.
DELICA TES For synthetics, machine washable silks, fine washables commonly was hed by hand (e.g. blouses, swea ters, but not wool or wool blends) , lace or crocheted (non-woolen) items, cu r tains and knit gar ments.
HANDW ASH/WOOL LENS / For all machine wash able woollens or hand-washable woo l or wool blends, in- cluding blankets and wool mi xtures with cotton or rayon.

T extile care symbols The textile care symbols on clothing in- dicate the maximum temperature at which the clothing should be washed and are a good guideline when choos- ing a programme. In choosing a pro- gramme, it can be taken into acco unt that front-loading machines are gentler on clothing than most top-loadin g, ver ti- cal tub m achines.
