GB - 6 Keep away from drop-offs, ditches, or embankments that could c ause operator to lose footing or cont rol of unit. AL WA YS be awa re of traffic when operating along streets or curbs. Keep work area clear of all persons, children and pets. Keep children out of the work area a nd under the watchful care of a responsible adult .
GB - 7 DO NOT mow at too fast a r ate. DO NOT change engine governor setting or over- speed the engine. Do not operate m ower on gravel or loose material such a s sand. S top mower when crossing drives, walks , or roads to prevent damage or injury f rom thrown objects.
GB - 8 Accidental engine start up can cause death or serious injury . Excep t where specifically recommended, AL WA YS stop engine, remove key (electric start models), wait for moving parts to stop, allow parts to cool and disconnect spark plug wire before inspecting, servicing, adjusting or repairing unit.

GB - 11 CONTROLS AND FEA TURES See Figure 4 for locations. Engine/Blade Control The engine/blade control must be held against the handlebar to start the engine and blade. Engine/blade control feature on mower stops engine and blade within 3 secon ds whenever operator releases handlebar .
GB - 12 S tand ard Models T o c hange cutting height, move cutting height levers one notch at a t ime on each wheel to set desired height (Figure 5). NOTE: Each wheel on mower must be set at the same height fo r a level cut.
GB - 13 S peed Control (self-prope lled models) S peed control rod changes the mower ’s forward travel speeds. S tart mowing slowly and use speed control rod to gradually increase speed to a safe, comfortable walking pace. S peed control rod should hold the desired speed.
GB - 14 FILLING THE FUEL T ANK GASOLINE IMPORT ANT : AL W A YS use gasoline that meets the following guidel ines: • Clean, fresh gasoline. • A minimum o f 87 octane/87 AKI (91 RON). High altitude use may require a diff erent octane. Consult your engine manual.
GB - 15 To B a g 1. Shut of f unit. 2. Install side discharge co ver . 3. Lift rear door . 4. Hook grass bag frame on m ounting flange. 5. Lower rear doo r . If necessary , lift rear of gr ass bag frame to lock in position. There should be no openings between bag and mounting surface after inst alling bag.
GB - 16 EMERG ENCY STOPP ING T o stop the m ower in an emergency: 1. Release the engine/blade control. 2. Release the wheel drive control (self- propelled models). 3. Allow all moving parts to stop before leaving operator ’s position. ST ARTING AND SHUT OFF See Figure 4 for all Controls and Features.
GB - 17 Ariens Dealers will provide any service, parts or adjustments which may be required to keep your unit operating at peak ef ficiency . Should engine require se rvice, contact an Ariens Dealer or an authorized engine manufacturer's service center .
GB - 18 CHECK WHEEL DRIVE CONTROL (Self-Propelled Models) The unit must stop quickly and c ompletely when the control is released. Adjust or rep air if necessary . Se e WHEEL DRIVE CONTROL ADJUST MENT on page 22. CHECK GRASS BAG Check grass bag frequently for wear or deterioration.
GB - 19 3. Check mower blade balance. Slide mower blade on an unthreaded bolt. A balanced blade should remain in a horizontal position. If eit her end of mower blade moves downward, sharpen the heavy end until blade is balanced (Figure 12). 4. Install mower blade on unit.
GB - 20 SER VICE PO SITION Put unit into se rvice position for eas y access to underneath the deck. 1. Place unit on a flat, level surface. 2. Disconnect spark plug w ire. 3. Remove fuel cap, place a piece of plastic bag over the opening and tighten cap securely .
GB - 21 ENGINE/BLADE CONTROL ADJUSTMENT (91 1 184) T o adjust engine/blade control: 1. Loosen cable nuts away from bracket. 2. Squeeze z-bend brac ket at engine end of cable toward front of unit and hold in place. 3. Pull cable down from br acket until there is no slack in cable.
GB - 22 WHEEL DRIVE CONTROL ADJUSTMENT (Self-Propelled Models) See Figure 16. NOTE: When the whee l drive control is disengaged, the gap between the friction disc and the aluminum drive plate should be approximately .030" (0.7mm). See Figure 16. Check the adjustment with the engine off and with the engine on: 1.
GB - 23 T o decrease the gap between the friction disc and the aluminum drive plate: 1. Loosen the upper cable nut on the wheel drive control cable, and then tighten t he lower cable nut against the adjuster bracket. See Figure 18. 2. Check the adjustment and readjust as needed.
GB - 24 IMPORT ANT : NEVER spray unit with high- pressure wa ter or store unit outdoors . S tore mower in a coo l, dry , protected location. Cleaning Clean unit thoroughly with mild soap and low pressure water . Brush off dirt and debris from all surfaces.
