GB - 7 SAFETY RULES If unit is to be used by someone other than original purchaser; loaned, r ented or sold, AL WA YS provide this manual and any needed safety training before o peration. Read, understand and f ollow all safety practices in Ow ner/Operator Manual b efore beginning assembly .
GB - 8 S top engine before removing and em ptying grass bag. When mulching or bagging, AL W A YS install discharge cover . When side discharging, AL WA Y S install side discharge deflector . AL WA YS shut off engi ne, allow blade to stop and disconnect spark plug wire before clearing clogs or cleaning unit.
GB - 9 Replace worn-out mufflers immediately . Continued use could result in fire or explosion. Sharp edges can cut or amputate fingers or a hand. Wrap bl ade or wear sturdy gloves to service. Use only replaceme nt parts designed for your unit. See your Ariens Dealer .
GB - 10 CONTROLS AND FEATURES See Figure 1 for locations. Engine/Blade Control The engine/blade control must be held against the handlebar to start the engine and blade. Releasing the control during operation stop s the engine and blade. Hand leba r Adjust handlebar t o a safe and co mfortable height.
GB - 1 1 OPTIONAL CONTROLS Primer Bulb Push the primer bulb in to add fuel f or easier engine start. S peed Control (self-pro pelled mode ls) S peed control rod changes the mower ’s forward travel speeds. High –Push lever all the way forward. Low –Pull lever all the way rearward.
GB - 12 FILLING FUEL T ANK T o add fuel to fuel tank: 1. Put unit in open or well -ventilated area. 2. S t op engine and allow t o cool. 3. Clean fuel cap and surrounding area. 4. Remove cap. IMPORT ANT : See engine manual for correct type and grade of f uel.
GB - 13 2. For engines with a primer , push primer bulb 2 or 3 times for a cold engine. NOTE: It is unneces sary to prime or choke a warm engine. 3. With engine/blade control held against the handlebar , grasp starter handle and pull rope slowly unt il it pulls harder .
GB - 14 CHECK WHEEL DRIVE CONTROL (self-propelled models) The unit must stop quickly and complet ely when the control is released. Adjust or repair if necessary . See Service and Adjustments . CHECK GRASS BAG Check grass bag frequently for wear or deterioration.
GB - 15 NOTE: Loose spark plug wire terminals can cause sparking. Replace terminal if damaged. CHECK ENGINE COOLING T o prevent overheating, air must circulate freely around the c ooling fins, cylinder head and block. Every 100 hours of operation or yearly (more often if conditions require) remove blower housing and clean coo ling fins.
GB - 16 ENGINE/BLADE CONTROL ADJUSTMENT T o adjust engine/blade control: 1. Loosen cable nuts away from bracket. 2. Squeeze z-bend brac ket at engine end of cable toward front of unit and hold in place. 3. Pull cable down from bracket until there is no slack in cable.
GB - 17 DRIVE BELT REPLACEME NT (self-propelled models) T o remove drive belt: 1. Set the right rear wheel to its lowest cutting height, and the left rear wheel to the third cutting height. This position provides clearance between friction disc and drive sheav e.
GB - 18 SPEED CONTROL BELL CRANK (self-propelled unit s) The speed con trol bell crank holds the sp eed control rod in po sition after a speed has been set. The spring washers may become loose with normal wear . If the speed control rod does not stay firmly in posit ion, adjust the speed control bell c rank.
