Before you start… M ake sure a wir eless network is av ailable and you have the network pas sword (if the ne twork is secured). Plug in and turn on 1. If you have a Typing Cover, bring it close to your Surf ace, so that it cli cks into plac e (see picture).
© 2014 Microsoft Page 6 Setup Setup runs the first tim e you turn on Surfa ce Pro. During setup you’ll choose a l anguage, colour scheme, an d name for your Surfac e. (You can ch ange these things later.) Two key things happ en during setup: Surface connects to y our wireless network .

© 2014 Microsoft Page 8 Start screen Start is the heart of your Surface —it’s where you ope n apps, see what your fri ends are doing, and get to your favourite websites. The tiles on Start show info, such as new e mail messages and the next appoint ment on your cal endar.

© 2014 Microsoft Page 14 Ge t s ta r te d Now that you know th e basics, let’s get onlin e and add your accounts. Get online Here’s how to get online: 1. Open the Settings charm (swipe in fro m the right ed ge of the screen, and th en tap Settings ) .

See contacts fro m all of your addr ess books in one place, and get the lates t updates from your fri ends. Also , sync contacts fro m the social network s you care about, such as Facebook, LinkedIn, a nd Twitter.

© 2014 Microsoft Page 18 Sleep and hibernation If you don’t use Surfa ce Pro for a few minutes, it go es to sleep just li ke a laptop. Sleep i s a power -saving state that allows Surface to qui ckly resume wh en you want to start working again . I f you don’t use Surfa ce Pro for an hour, it will go into a hibernation state.
© 2014 Microsoft Page 19 When you see a low batt ery warning, plug your Surface Pro into an e lectrical outlet. If you don’t recharg e the battery, Surface will eventually save your wor k and shut down. Notes It takes 2-4 hours to fully charge your S urface Pro battery from an e mpty state.

The touchscreen The multi-touch s creen has a 16 :9 aspect ratio — perfect for watching 1080p HD videos and o ptimiz ed for multi - tasking with sid e- by -side apps.

Type diacritical marks Press and hold a key su ch as O, then slide your f inger to the accente d character that you want (for exa mple, Ӧ).

Open the Search char m, type pen and touch in the search box, choose Pen an d Touch fro m the search results. 2. Select Double- tap or Press and hold , then tap or click Settings .

© 2014 Microsoft Page 34 Switch between open apps If you want to keep your apps full screen, you can quickly sw itch between open ap ps. Here’s how: Switch back to a previous app Touch . Swipe in from th e left edge of the screen . Mouse . Move th e mouse pointer into th e upper-l eft corner of the screen, and then click.

Saving Off ice docs on SkyDriv e also makes it easy to share and work with o ther people.

© 2014 Microsoft Page 89 BitLocker recovery key If a security event or hardwa re failure lo cks your Surfac e, you’ll need a BitLocker r ecovery key to sign in. If you sign in to your Surf ace with a Microsoft account, a cop y of your BitLocker re covery key is automatic ally backed up to that account.
