Black plate (14,1) Front Seats WARNING Do not modify or replac e the front seats: Modifying or repla cing the front seats such as replacing the upholstery or loosening any bolts is dangerous. The front seats conta in air bag components essential to the supplemental restraint system.
Black plate (15,1) q Seat Recline WARNING Do not drive with either front seat reclined: Sitting in a reclined position while the vehicle is moving is dangerous because you do not get the full protection from sea t belts. During sudden braking or a collision, you can slide under the lap belt and suffer seriou s internal injuries.
Black plate (16,1) CAUTION When returni ng a rear-reclined seatback to its upright position, make sure you hold on to the seatback with you r other han d while operating the lever. If the sea tback is not supp orted, it will flip forward suddenly and could cause injury.
Black plate (17,1) Never allo w a passe nger to sit or stand on the folded seatback while the vehicle is moving: Driving with a passenger on the folded sea tback is dangerous. Allowing a child to sit up on the folded sea tback while the vehicle is moving is particu larly dangerous.

Make sure that the seat belt is neith er stuck in the rear seat nor twisted, then remove the seat belt from the belt clip. Head Restraints Y our vehicle is equipped with head restraints on all outboard seats.
Black plate (20,1) Front outboard seat Rear outboard seat Removal/Installation T o remo ve the head restraint, pull it up while press ing the stop-catch. T o inst all the head restraint, press the uprights into the holes while pressing the stop-catch.
Black plate (21,1) Seat Belt Precautions Seat belts help to d ecrease the possibility of severe injury during accidents and sudden stops. Mazda recommends that the driver and all passengers always wear seat belts. All of the seat belt retractors are designed to keep the lap/shoul der belts out of the way when not in use.
Black plate (22,1) WARNING Always wea r your seat belt and ma ke sure all occupants are properly restrained: Not wearing a seat belt is extremely dangerous. During a collis ion, occupants not wearing seat belts could hit someone or things inside the veh icle or even be thrown out of the vehicle.
Black plate (23,1) CAUTION Belt retract ion may become difficult if the belts and rings are soiled, so try to keep them clean . For mor e details about cleaning the seat belts, refer to “ Cleaning the Lap/Shoulder Belt Webbing ” (page 8-52).
Black plate (24,1) q Automatic Locking Mode Always use the automatic locking mode to keep the child-res traint system from shifting to an unsafe position in the event of an accident. T o enable seat belt automatic locking mode, pull it all the way out and connect it as instruct ed on the child-restrai nt system.
Black plate (25,1) Seat Belt q Fastening the Seat Belt 1. Grasp the seat b elt tongue. 2. Slowly pull out the lap/shoul der belt. Lap/shoulder belt Seat belt tongue 3. Insert the seat b elt tongue into the seat belt buck le until you hear a clic k sound.
Black plate (26,1) q Unfastening the Seat Belt Depress the button on the seat belt buckle. If the belt does not fully retract, pull it out and check for kinks or twists. Then make sure it remains untwisted as it retracts. Button NOTE If a belt does not fully retract, inspect it for kinks and twists.
Black plate (27,1) Front Seat Belt Pretensioner and Load Limiting Systems For optimum protection, the driver and front passen ger seat belts are equipped with prete nsioner and load limiting systems. For both these systems to work properly y ou must wear the seat belt properly .
Black plate (28,1) Do not modify the compo nents or wiring, or use electronic testing devic es on the pretensioner system: Modifying the componen ts or wiring of the pretensioner system, including the use of electronic testing devices is dangerous.
Black plate (29,1) q Air Bag/Front Seat Belt Pretensioner System W arning Beep If a malfunction is detected in the air bag/ front seat belt pretensioner systems and the warning light, a warning beep sound will be heard for about 5 seconds every minute.
Black plate (30,1) Do not use an imprope r extender: Using a seat belt exten der that is for another perso n or a diffe rent vehicle or seat is dangerous. The seat belt will not provide adequate protection and the user could be seriously injured in an accident.
Black plate (31,1) Seat Belt W arning Light Driver's seat Front passenger's seat The seat belt warning ligh t illuminates if the driver or front passen ger's seat is occupied and the seat belt is not fastened with the ignition switched ON.
Black plate (32,1) NOTE l The warning light flashes and a beep sound will be heard for about 6 seconds if the driver's seat belt is not fastened when the ignition is switched ON.
Black plate (33,1) Child Restraint Precautions Mazda strongly urges the use of chil d-restraint syst ems for children smal l enough to use them. Y ou are required by law to use a child-restraint system for children in the U.
Black plate (34,1) WARNING Use the correct size child -restraint system: For effective protection in vehicle accidents and sudden stop s, a child must be properly restrained using a seat belt or child-restraint system dep ending on age and size. If not, the child could be seriously injured or even killed in an accident.

Black plate (37,1) Child-Restraint System Installation Position In this owner's manual, explanation of child-restraint systems is provided for the following three types of popular chil d- restraint systems: infan t seat, child seat, booster seat.
Black plate (38,1) Installing Child-Restraint Systems Accident statistics reveal that a child is safer in the rear seat. The front passenger's seat is clearly the worst choice for any child und er 12, and with rear-facing child- restraint systems it is clearly unsafe due to air bags.

First, adjust the front seat to allow clearance between the child-res traint system and the front seat (page 2-2). 2. Make sure the seatb ack is securely latched by pushing it bac k until it is fully locked .

Black plate (48,1) Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Precautions The front and side suppl emental restraint systems (SRS) include 6 air bags. Please verif y the air bags equipped o n your vehicl e by locating the “ SRS AIRBAG ” location indicators.

If the vehicle 's height or the suspension is modified, the vehicle will be unable to accurately detect a collis ion resulting in incor rect or unexpected air bag deployment and the possib ility of serious injuries.

Black plate (54,1) How the SRS Air Bags W ork Y our Mazda is equipped with the follow ing types of SRS air bags. SRS air bags are designed to work together with the seat belts to help to reduce injuries during an accident. The SRS air bags are designed to provide furt her protectio n for passen gers in a ddition to the seat belt functions.
Black plate (55,1) q Front Passenger Air Bag The front passenger air bag is mounted in the front passenger dashboard. The infl ation mechanism for the front passen ger air bag is the same as the drive r's air bag, as mentioned above. For more details about air bag deployment, refer to “ SRS Air Bag Depl oyment Criteria ” (page 2-47).
Black plate (56,1) q Side Air Bags The side air bags are mounted in the outboard sides of the front seatbacks. When the air bag crash sensors detect a side impact of great er than moderate force, the system inflates the side air bag only on the side in whi ch the vehicle was hit.
Black plate (57,1) In a side impact: Greater than moderate impact to one side of the vehicle will cause the curtain air bag on that side only to infl ate. The side and curtain air bags will deploy only on the side the vehicle recei ves the force of the impact.
Black plate (58,1) A system malfunction is indicated if the warning light const antly flashes, constantly illuminates or does not illuminate at all when the ignitio n is switch ed ON. If any of these occur , consult an Authori zed Mazda Dealer as soon as possi ble.

Replace with a new battery before the transmitter becomes unusable. CAUTION Ø Install the battery with the positive pole ( ) facing down.

Black plate (79,1) q Rear Door Child Safety Locks These locks are intended to help prevent children from accide ntally opening the rear doors. Use them both whenever a child rides in the vehicl e. If you slide the child safety lock to the lock position before closing that door, the door cannot be opened from the inside.
Black plate (80,1) CAUTION Be careful not to apply excessive force to the damper stay on the liftgate such as by putting your hand on the stay. Otherwis e, the damper stay may bend and affect the liftga te operation.

Black plate (85,1) Power wind ow system initialization procedure If the battery was disco nnected during vehicle mai ntenance, or for other reason s (such as a switch conti nues to be operated after the window is full y open/closed), the window will not fully open and close automatically .
Black plate (86,1) q Operating the Passenger Power Windows The power window may be operated when the power window lock switch on the driver's door is in the unlocked position. The passenger window may be opened or closed using the master control switch es on the driver's door .
Black plate (87,1) Fuel-Filler Lid and Cap WARNING When remov ing the fuel-filler cap, loosen the cap slightly and wait for any hissing to stop. Then remove it: Fuel spray is dangerous.

Black plate (91,1) Immobilizer System The immo bilizer system allows the engine to start only with a key the system recognizes. If someone attempts to start the engine with an unrecognized key , the engine will not start, thereby helping to prevent the theft of your vehicle.

Black plate (98,1) Fuel Requirements V ehicles with catalytic converters or oxygen sensors must use ONL Y UNLEADED FUEL , which wi ll reduce exhaust emi ssions and keep spark plug fouling to a minimum. Y our Mazda will perform best with fuel listed in the table.
Black plate (99,1) Emission Control System Y our vehicle is equipped with an emission control system (the catal ytic converter is part of this syst em) that enables your vehicle to compl y with existing exhaust emi ssions requirements.
Black plate (100,1) Engine Exhaust (Carbon Monoxide) WARNING Do not drive your vehic le if you smell exhaust gas in side the vehicle: Engine exha ust gas is da ngerous. This gas contains ca rbon monoxide (CO), which is colorless, odorless, and pois onous.
Black plate (101,1) Before Getting In l Be sure the windows, ou tside mirrors, and outside lights are clean. l Inspect infl ation pressures and condition of tires. l Look under the vehicle for any sign of fluid leaks . l If you plan to back up, make sure nothing is in your way .
Black plate (102,1) Break-In Period No special break-in is necessary , but a few precautions in the first 1,000 km (600 miles) may add to the performance, economy , and life of your Mazda. l Do not race the engine . l Do not maintain one const ant speed, either slow or fast, for a long perio d of time.
Black plate (103,1) Hazardous Driving WARNING Be extre mely carefu l if it is necessar y to downshift on slipper y sur faces: Downshifting into lower gear while driving on slippery sur faces is dangerous. The sudden chang e in tire speed could cause the tires to skid.
Black plate (104,1) Rocking the V ehicle WARNING Do not spin the wheels at more than 56 km/h (35 mph), and do not allow anyone to stand behind a wheel when pushing the vehicle: When the vehicle is stuck, spinni ng the wheels at high spe ed is dangerous.
Black plate (105,1) q Snow Tires Use snow tires on all four wheel s Do not go fast er than 120 km/ h (75 mph) while driving with snow tires. Inflate snow tir es 30 kPa (0.3 kgf/cm 2 , 4.3 psi) more than recommende d on the tire pressure label (driver's door frame), but never more than the maximum cold-tir e pressure show n on the tires.

Increased stopping distance or the vehicle pulling to one side when braking could result in a serious accide nt.
