7 Installation Instructions Attach a hose to the water heater drain valve and put the other end in a floor drain or outdoors. Open the water heater drain valve. Open a near by hot water faucet which will relieve pressure in the water heater and speed draining.

12 Instructions for Installation (cont’d) Filling the W ater Heater To fill the water heater with water: 1. Close the water heater drain valve by turning the hand le to the right (c lockwise). The drain val ve is on the lower front of the water heater .

Wiring 16 Instructions for Installation (cont’d) GREEN GROUND SCREW CONDUIT WIRE NUTS 1. Pr ovide a way to easily shut off the electric power when working on the water heater . This could be with a circuit breaker or fuse block in the entrance box or a separate dis- connect switch.
17 Selecting Thermostat Location 1. The programmable thermostat control module is shipped attached to the front of the water heater , located behind the hinged cover panel.
18 Instructions for Installation (cont’d) 10. Carefully disconnect wir ing har ness ter minal connector from back of ther mostat. 11. Remove the wall plate from the water heater by unscrewing the two mounting screws. The wall plate will be installed at the selected location in S teps 28 and 29.
19 19. Str ip the thermostat cable outer insulation bac k 1 1 ⁄ 4 inches. Str ip the ends 1 ⁄ 4 inch on each of the six colored wir es. 20. A second terminal connector is provided in a small bag con- tained within the large plastic manual envelope attached to the side of the water heater .

L oosen each screw in the terminal connector one at a time and insert wire with the same color insulation into eac h numbered slot .
21 31. Using the terminal connector removed in Step 12, insert the six colored insulated wires in the r emote ther mostat cable into the numbered slots in the terminal connector and tight- en each screw to secure each wire. Be sure to arrange wires in e xact color sequence as shown.

23 Instructions for Operation VER Y LOW – The thermostat minimum setbac k tempera- ture is 60°F . HOT– A thermostat setting of 120°F will supply hot water at the most economical temperatures. VER Y HOT– The thermostat maximum temperature is 160°F .
Pr ogramming the Thermostat (cont‘d) 24 MANU AL MODE The most basic operation of the Intelligent water heater ther- mostat is the Manual Mode . With this mode the ther mostat is set at a desired temperature and the water heater operates to maintain that temperature.
25 ER ASE is the option that c an delete all the settings that had been programmed previously . W hile in the programmable mode, depressing the “E RAS E” button will delete a par ticular time period that is on display . Depressing and holding the “E RA SE” button down for several seconds will erase all the set- tings for an entire week.
26 The third optional mode (3) setting involves the default tem- perature set point for the control. T o be in this mode, depress the up ( ) arrow or the down ( ) arrow until a large number 3 appears in the lower right-hand corner . The default temperature from the factor y is 120°F .
Draining The water heater should be drained if being shut down during freezing temperatures. Also periodic draining and cleaning of sediment from the tank may be necessar y . 1. Before beginning turn “OFF ” the electr ic power supply to the water heater .
28 Service and Maintenance (cont’d) Element Cleaning/ Replacement 2. T urn off the water suppl y to the water heater at the water shutoff valve or water meter . W ARNING HAZARD OF ELECTRICAL SHOCK! Before r emoving any access panels or servicing the water heater , make sure the electrical supply to the water heater is turned “OFF”.
10. A new gasket should be used in all cases to prev ent a pos- sible water leak. (See Element Gasket in the Repair Parts Chart). P lace the new element gasket on the thread side of the cleaned or ne w element and screw into tank, secur- ing tightly using an element wrench.
30 Service and Maintenance (cont’d) 15. Reconnect the two wires to the element and then chec k to make sure the high limit remains firmly against the surface of the tank. 16. Upper High Limit Only - Replace terminal cover on high limit making sure that the locking tabs on the ter- minal cover are in place.
31 Drain V alve W asher Replacement NOTE: F or replacement, use a 17 ⁄ 32 ″ x 13 ⁄ 64 ″ x 1 ⁄ 8 ″ thick washer available at your nearest hardware store. F or order ing a replacement washer , refer to the “ Repair P ar ts” section. 1. Before beginning turn “OFF ” the electrical power supply to the water heater .
32 Start Up Conditions THERMAL EXP ANSION W ater supply systems may , bec ause of such events as high line pressure , frequent cut-off s, the effects of water hammer among others, have installed devices such as pressure reducing valves, check val ves, back flow preventers, etc.
33 5. Press the insulation pad back in place so that it completely covers the high limit and element. 6. Replace the upper access panel. 7. T urn “ON” electric power to the water heater .
34 Tr oubleshooting (cont’d) CAUTION This will not discontinue power from the water heater . THERMOST A T DIAGNOSTICS The programmable thermostat will use the upper and lower temperature sensors (thermistors) to determine when either the upper or lower heating element is not functioning.
