1 8 Video Cassette Playback • Other tape playback features are on pages 40-47. • If A UT O REPEA T is ON, playback will begin when you inser t a tape , even when the recor d tab is intact. Details are on page 40. • Y ou must connect the D VD/VCR to a TV using the RF coaxial cable or the audio/video cables in order to use the VCR features.
Disc Playback 1 9 • An “ X ” may appear at the top right corner of the TV screen when you tr y a featur e . Either the featur e is not available on the Disc , or the D VD/VCR cannot access the feature at this time . This does not indicate a problem with the D VD/VCR.

VCR Status Displays 3 1 Y ou ma y access status displa ys by pressing DISPLA Y . The displa ys ma y include the current time, channel, and other information. 1 Press DISPLA Y . The COUNT displa y will appear for five seconds. After five seconds, only the real-time tape counter will appear .
32 Videotape Recor ding Read and follow the steps belo w to record a tele vision pro- gram onto a videotape. Before y ou begin, make sur e the D VD/VCR is in VCR mode . Press VCR so the VCR light appears on the front of the D VD/VCR. 1 T urn on the TV and set it to channel 3 or 4 or the Video In channel.

D VD to Videotape Duplication 39 Fo llow the steps below to cop y a D VD to a videotape . This will be possible only if the D VD is not cop y protected. Befor e you begin: ● Put a videotape in the cassette compartment. Make sur e the tape’ s r ecord tab is intact and the tape is long enough to recor d the D VD .
40 40 Repeat Play F ollow the steps belo w to play a videota pe repeatedly . 1 Press VCR, then press DISC/MENU so MENU a ppears. 2 Press o or p to select AUT O REPEA T . 3 Press B so ON a ppears next to AUT O REPEA T . Ta pe pla yback will begin immediately .
41 T ape Counter 4 1 • Y ou may only set the counter to ze ro at one location at a time . Setting the counter to zer o at a second location will erase the pr e- vious zer o setting. • If you remo ve the tape , the counter will reset to z ero at the point at which you last stopped play whenever you reinsert the tape .
42 42 Time Search, Index Search Time Sear ch F ollow the steps belo w to search forwar d or backward on a tape a specific length of time. There must be a tape in the cassette compartment. 1 Press VCR, then press SEARCH MODE until the TIME SEARCH screen a ppears.
43 Special Effects Playback 43 ● Befor e you begin, press VCR so the VCR light appears on the front of the D VD/VCR. F orward and Re verse Sear ching (SP/LP/SLP) 1 During tape pla y , press and r elease SEARCH/FF g or SEARCH/REW h . A fast forward or r ev erse pic- ture sear ch will begin.

Automatic Pla yback When you put a ta pe in the D VD/VCR, the pow er will come on. If the tape’ s r ecord tab is missing, pla yback will begin.
45 Multi-Channel T elevision Sound 45 To pla y programs in ster eo, connect the D VD/VCR to a Stereo or TV as described on pages 11 and 1 4. Y ou will use the red and white D VD/VCR A UDIO OUT jacks. Y our D VD/VCR can play ta pes recorded in Hi-Fi (high fidelity) ster eo, which pr oduces a crisp, clear sound from the left and right audio channels.

Using the Title Menu Some D VDs ha ve a Title Menu, which lists the Titles available on the D VD . Use the Title Menu to pla y a specific Title. 1 Press D VD to put the D VD/VCR in D VD mode. The D VD light will appear on the fr ont of the D VD/VCR. 2 Press TITLE.
F ast F orw ard/Re ver se Search 49 1 Press D VD to put the D VD/VCR in D VD mode. The D VD light will appear on the fr ont of the D VD/VCR. 2 During pla y , press SEARCH/FF g or SEARCH/ REW h . Use SEARCH/FF g f or a forward sear ch. Press SEARCH/REW h f or a rev erse search.

52 P aused and Step-b y-Step Playback, Resume Resume 1 Press D VD to put the D VD/VCR in D VD mode. The D VD light will appear on the fr ont of the D VD/VCR. 2 Press ST OP C during pla y . In a few seconds, the follow- ing Resume message will appear on the TV screen.
Repeat, A-B Repeat 53 • Repeat play and A-B Repeat are not available with all Discs . • The entire A-B Repeat section must be within a single Title or T r ac k. If you do not enter Point B bef ore the end of the T rack or Title is reached, the end of the T rack or Title will become Point B automatically .
54 Markers Use Mark ers to remember your fa vorite places on a D VD , Audio CD , or Video CD (without PBC). T o set the Markers, follo w these steps. ● Befor e you begin, place the D VD/VCR in D VD mode . Press D VD so the D VD light appears on the fr ont of the D VD/VCR.
• On some D VDs , you must select a subtitle language in the Disc menu. • If the language does not appear after pressing SUBTITLE sever al times , the Disc does not have subti- tles in that language. • Opening the disc tray will cancel your subtitle setting.
56 P arental Contr ols P asswor d Parental Contr ols pre vents vie wing of D VDs that exceed your rating limits. This feature will not limit viewing if the D VD is not rated or coded. Check your D VDs and settings before letting childr en access the D VD/VCR.
4 Press s or B to select (the lock), then press OK. Pa r ental Levels 57 Fo llow these steps to set the rating lev el for your D VDs. D VDs whose ratings exceed the lev el you set will not pla y . 1 Press D VD to put the D VD/VCR in D VD mode. The D VD light will appear on the fr ont of the D VD/VCR.
58 Audio Language , Stereo Sound Mode Audio Languag e Y ou can select a language for D VDs during pla yback if multiple lan- guages are a vailable. 1 Press D VD to put the D VD/VCR in D VD mode. The D VD light will appear on the fr ont of the D VD/VCR.
• The sound will be mute during slow motion play . • The SLO W button on the remote does not activate slow motion of D VDs . • The x4 zooming is not active with some Discs . Only x2 zooming is available for Video CDs and JPEGs . Helpful Hints Slo w Motion, Zoom 59 Slo w Motion 1 Press P AUSE F during D VD or Video CD play .
60 Pr ogr ammed Playback Y ou ma y determine the order in which Audio CD , MP3, or JPEG T racks will pla y . 1 Press D VD to put the D VD/VCR in D VD mode. The D VD light will appear on the fr ont of the D VD/VCR. 2 While pla y is stopped, press MODE.
Random Playback 6 1 Y ou ma y pla y Audio CD , JPEG, or MP3 T racks in Random order instead of the order in which the y are recor ded ( 1 ,2,3...). 1 Press D VD to put the D VD/VCR in D VD mode. The D VD light will appear on the fr ont of the D VD/VCR.
62 MP3/JPEG Playback The D VD Pla yer will pla y MP3 and JPEG files that you r ecord and finalize on a CD-R W (Compact Disc-Rewritable) or CD-R (Compact Disc-Recordable). These Discs ma y contain pictures in a JPEG format or audio T racks in an MP3 format.
MP3/JPEG Displays 63 Y ou can revie w MP3 and JPEG information during pla y . ● Befor e you begin, place the D VD/VCR in D VD mode . Press D VD so the D VD light appears on the fr ont of the D VD/VCR. 1 Press DISPLA Y during play . The curr ent T rack name will show on the TV .

Change Audio settings based on other equipment you connected to the D VD/VCR or according to y our Disc sound features. Initializing 7 1 Use INITIALIZE to return all the D VD Pla yer’ s Setup menu items (except for P ARENT AL) to their default settings. 1 Press D VD to put the D VD/VCR in D VD mode. The D VD light will appear on the fr ont of the D VD/VCR. 2 While pla y is stopped, press SETUP .
72 Glossar y A UDIO IN/OUT Jacks: jacks on the fr ont and back of the D VD/VCR that receiv e audio from another sour ce (IN) or send audio to another system (OUT). These jacks are r ed (right) and white (left). Automatic Channel Setup: process in which the VCR memorizes all a vailable TV channels.

Helpful Hints (cont’ d) 75 There is no sound. • Connect the audio cables firmly . Mak e sure the cables ar e connected to the AUDIO IN jacks on the TV or Stereo . Details are on pages 11 - 1 4. • Check the audio settings of the D VD Pla yer . Details are on page 68.
Po w er Failur e • Clock setting, language selection, and channel setup ma y be lost if the power fails. See pages 26-30 to set up the channels, clock, and language again. The VCR will not recor d a TV pr ogram. • Put the D VD/VCR in VCR mode . Press VCR or SOURCE so the VCR light appears on the front of the D VD/VCR.
Y ou cannot inser t a video cassette. • Insert the tape , window side up, with the record tab facing y ou. • Mak e sure a tape isn’ t already in the VCR by pressing ST OP/EJECT C A on the front of the D VD/VCR. • Gently push on the center of the tape when putting it in the VCR.
