Magellan SporT rak 1 Intr oduction Congratulations on your purchase of the M agellan SporT rak GPS receiver . Since introducing the world ’ s first commercial, hand-held GPS receiver in 1989, M agellan has led the way with innov ative GPS products to meet a wide range of positioning and navigation needs.
2 Magellan SporT rak SporT r ak GPS R eceiv er ENTER key confirms data entries or menu selections. NA V key accesses the navigation screens. QUIT key cancels the operation of the last key press and can be used to back through the NA V screens. MARK key creates waypoints and stores the current position.

4 Magellan SporT rak Proper Handling - Signal Reception Clear View of the Sky . Because the receiver attains information it needs from satellites orbiting the earth, the antenna needs to have a relatively unobstructed view of the sky . This allo ws the receiver to choose from all satellites currently available.
Magellan SporT rak 5 Initialize f or Fir st Time Use The final step in setting up the S porT rak for the first time is to initialize the receiver . This will help your S porT rak begin computing your position in the fastest manner possible.
6 Magellan SporT rak K ey Layout Screen A screen is displayed sho wing the icons and text name for each key . When the SporT rak prompts y ou to press a key , it displays the text equivalent for the key icon. This screen should help you understand which key the SporT rak is prompting y ou to press.
Magellan SporT rak 7 Y ou are prompted to enter the elevation of your present position. Use the arr ow keys to enter the elevation, if y ou know it. If y ou don ’ t know your elevation, press ENTER . The cursor appears in the time field, waiting for you to input your local time.
8 Magellan SporT rak Y ou have completed the Initialization . The ST A TUS scr een will appear on your receiver . N ote: The “3D” in the upper left corner is displayed when the receiv er has begun comput- ing your position.
Magellan SporT rak 9 Getting a Fixed P osition N ow you should go outside in an ar ea where you can get a clear view of the sky . The receiver will begin acquiring data from the satellites in view and will display the progress on the ST A TUS screen. Once the receiver has computed a fix ed position, the POSITION screen will be displayed.

12 Magellan SporT rak Using the Status Screen The ST A TUS scr een gives you the general well-being of your receiver by sho wing y ou satellite status, signal strengths and battery life. Pic Once the receiver has computed a fixed position, the ST A TUS screen will be replaced by the POSITION screen.

14 Magellan SporT rak Using the NA V 1 Screen The NA V 1 screen displays your destination along with four customizable navigation data and a graphical compass.
Magellan SporT rak 15 Using the Compass Screen As well as displaying the customizable navigation data, the COMP ASS screen pro vides a pointer compass to help you reach your destination. Steering Indicator Displays the bearing of the destination relative to the course over ground.

Magellan SporT rak 17 Using the Plot Screen The PL OT scr een is a mini map that shows where y ou have traveled and where you want to trav el. Y ou can view the active route, your curr ent position and the other waypoints and destination in the PL O T screen.
18 Magellan SporT rak The ARR O Ws can be used to move the cursor . If the cursor is over the waypoint icon when MENU is pr essed, the menu will be displayed with WPT INFO added. M o ving the cursor ov er a waypoint brings up the name, bearing and distance.

The softwar e allows you to select a geographical area and enable waypoint categories for that location to be transferred into the receiv er .
32 Magellan SporT rak Working with Routes Cr eating/Clearing a GO T O A GO TO is a r oute that guides you from your curr ent position to any waypoint in the receiver ’ s memory . As an example, you can save a waypoint at your home. N o matter where you go, you will always be able to navigate back home by using GO T O.
Magellan SporT rak 33 Creating a Backtrack R oute Backtrack creates a r oute that starts from the last point recor ded in track history using the “bread crumbs” sav ed, to the first point recor ded for track history . By following this route, you “ retrace your steps ” back to the starting point.

Magellan SporT rak 35 Changing a W aypoint in a Route. Using y our home to campsite route, you want to go to the fishing spot on the way to the campsite and not stop at the stream. 40 Magellan SporT rak Selecting the Simulate Mode The Simulate mode will help you become familiar with y our receiver and ho w it works by generating artificial position fixes. B y utilizing Simulate, the r eceiver will create a route and will continue until you end it.
Magellan SporT rak 41 Selecting Alar m/Message Accessing the Alar m/Messa ge Menu While navigating, you may decide to set an alarm. The receiver has five types of alarms: Anchor alarm, Arriv al alarm, XTE alarm, P roximity alarm and GPS F ix alarm.
42 Magellan SporT rak Selecting Proximity Alarm The P roximity alarm will sound when you ar e within the proximity of any waypoints you hav e chosen that are not on the active route. Selecting Ar rival Alar m The Arrival alarm will notify you when y ou are within the arrival circle of the destination waypoint.
Magellan SporT rak 43 PROX WPTS REEF ROCKS WPT001 WPT002 * DELETE and REPLACE will be displayed only if you select a used waypoint field. The alarm will sound and a pop-up window will appear when the GPS position is within the proximity distance y ou have chosen.

Magellan SporT rak 51 Selecting Baud Rate Connection to external devices requir es that the baud rate of the data being sent or received by the r eceiver be matched to the baud rate of the external device.
52 Magellan SporT rak T r oubleshooting Receiver will not tur n on: 1. Check to see if batteries are installed corr ectly . 2. Replace with two new AA alkaline or lithium batteries. T akes more than 10 minutes to get a position fix: 1. If there ar e any obstacles nearby or overhead, mo ve to a new location.
Magellan SporT rak 53 F requentl y Ask ed Questions General What is the difference betw een degr ees/minutes/seconds (DEG/ MIN/SEC) and degr ees/minutes/minutes (DEG/MIN/MMM or DEG/MIN/MM)? There are differ ent ways in expressing the coordinates computed using Lat/Lon coordinate system.
54 Magellan SporT rak Ho w often do I need to initialize the SporT r ak? Initializing the S porT rak decreases the time it takes to get a position fix during cold start. What is meant by a cold start is that the SporT rak has no refer ence to use as a guide to tell it what satellites should be overhead.
Magellan SporT rak 55 Ho w do I know which route is activ e? Access the route menu by pr essing the MENU button and select the option Routes. The route menu lists all of the routes in memory with the active route displayed in bold characters.
