W elcome and congratulations on your purchase of one of the Magellan S porT rak GPS mapping receivers. The S porT rak has all the features that a sailor , fisherman, hiker , hunter , or any person involved with outdoor recr eational activities has come to expect from a Magellan GPS r eceiver .
2 Magellan SporT rak GPS R eceiver Refer ence G uide: He re you will find step-by-step instructions for all of the features found in the S porT rak. This chapter is set up in a way that you can quickly and easily find the feature you ar e looking for .
3 M agellan S porT rak GPS Receiv er Setting up the S porT rak is a simple three-step process: installing the batteries, selecting the language to be used and initializing the S porT rak. The Magellan S porT rak uses two AA batteries that are installed from the back through the battery cover .
4 Magellan SporT rak GPS Receiver The final step in setting up the SporT rak is to initialize the receiver for first-time use. This will help your SporT rak begin computing your position in the fastest manner possible.
5 M agellan S porT rak GPS Receiv er Pr ess [ENTER]. ( Y ou have 10 seconds to press [ENTER] or the S porT rak will shut off.) The S porT rak displays a message box indicating that the receiver needs to be initialized. Pr ess [ENTER]. U se the U p/Do wn arrows on the keypad to highlight your general region.
6 Magellan SporT rak GPS Receiver When the time is correct, pr ess [ENTER]. The last piece of information needed is the date. U sing the arrow keys, enter the present date. Pr ess [ENTER]. Pr essing right arrow r esults in: Pr essing up arrow r esults in: Editing moves the cursor block left or right.
7 M agellan S porT rak GPS Receiv er F or many of you this will be your first introduction into using a GPS receiver as a navigational tool. With all of the features and functions provided with the S porT rak, it may seem a bit intimidating at first. Don ’ t worry .
8 Magellan SporT rak GPS Receiver The display backlight can be set to one of three levels (lo w , high or off ). Press and hold for 2 seconds Display backlight illuminates (low) Press and hold for 2 s.
9 M agellan S porT rak GPS Receiv er The S porT rak has seven navigation screens: Map scr een, Compass screen, Large Data screen, two P osition screens, Road screen, and Sat S tatus screen. They will be described briefly here. M ore detailed information on the different screens can be found in the R eference chapter of the U ser Manual.
10 Magellan SporT rak GPS Receiver M ap Screen The Map scr een has two modes, position or cursor . In the position mode, your pr esent position is indicated by the large arrow icon in the center of the display . If you are mo ving, the arrow will point in the direction that you ar e heading.
11 M agellan S porT rak GPS R eceiver P osition Screens. The P osition screens 1 and 2 display your present position using the coor dinate systems that you have selected in Setup . This screen shows all of the basic position, time and satellite information.
12 Magellan SporT rak GPS Receiver A waypoint is a point on a map that you can name and sav e in the SporT rak. They are primarily used for creating r outes. Whether the route is a simple GO T O or a more complex multileg route, it needs stor ed waypoints to use as its starting and destination point.
13 M agellan S porT rak GPS R eceiver As a reference tool, all of the icons and their names ar e listed in the Refer ence Chapter of the User M anual. When you have highlighted the icon you want to use, press [ENTER] . The cursor is now highlighting the W aypoint N ame field.
14 Magellan SporT rak GPS Receiver SHOR TCUT : There is a shortcut to accessing the Mark screen that you may find easier to use than accessing Mark fr om the Main Menu. I f you press the [GO TO] key and hold it down for 2-3 seconds, the Mark W aypoint Screen is displayed.

U se the UP/DO WN arrows to highlight your choice of waypoint to be your destination and pr ess [ENTER] .
16 Magellan SporT rak GPS Receiver The list of all the waypoints for the category you selected, in this case cities, is displayed with the waypoint that was previously selected at the top of the list. N ow just use the U p/Do wn arrows to highlight the waypoint you are looking for and press [ENTER] .

At the bottom of the display is the information for the position of the cursor relative to your pr esent position. Also any points of interest that the cursor is ov er will be shown.
22 Magellan SporT rak GPS Receiver Refer ence S etting the M ap Detail — The detail of the map can be set to highest, high, medium, low or low est. This changes the zoom level that differ ent map objects (cities, highways, labels, etc.) are displayed.
23 Magellan SporT rak GPS R eceiver Reference C ustomizing the M ap D isplay — The Map screen can be customized for your individual needs and requir ements. Y ou can select what is being displayed on the map as well as what additional data will be presented at the bottom of the screen.

Y ou can choose from Customize F ields, Str eet Information or , if topographic information is loaded, you can select Horiz ontal P rofile or T errain P rojection.
26 Magellan SporT rak GPS Receiver Refer ence function requires that map data has been uploaded from Magellan M apSend T opo for the U nited S tates and that your present position as well as the projected horizon falls within the area uploaded.
27 Magellan SporT rak GPS R eceiver Reference T errain Projection, the default T wo Data F ields is displayed. Changing the Orientation back to “T rack Up ” will revert back to the projected terrain. Changing the Map Orientation — Y ou can change how the map is orientated on the screen to either N or th U p, Course U p or T rack Up .

F or example, if you have a topographical map loaded but the cursor or present position is not on a r oad, the option “Highlighted r oad” will not be displayed.

Now you can continue adding legs to the path. T ip: Y ou can convert this path into a stored route by simply pressing the MENU key and selecting the Save T o Route option.

Y ou will need to access waypoints in the database whenever you are editing waypoints, activating a GO T O route or creating a multileg r oute.
