Xserve Processor - 2 4. If the ser v er is in the loc k ed position (the y ellow security LED on the front panel is on), use the Allen ke y that came with the server to unloc k it. 5. If the cable management arm is not in use, unplug all e xternal cables e xcept the power cord.
Xserve Processor - 3 9. Grasp the thumbscre ws and slide the bottom housing f orward part wa y to e xpose the two chassis le v ers . (Figure 2) 10. While depressing both le v ers , pull the bottom housing all the w a y forw ard and remo v e it from the rac k.
Xserve Processor - 4 Removing the Installed Pr ocessor 1. Release the latch on the heatsink duct (Figure 3) , and remov e the duct from the ser v er . Figure 3 2. Release the three captiv e screws that secure the heatsink. (Figure 4) 3. Lift the heatsink straight up and remo ve it from the server .

P osition the replacement processor over its logic board connector and press do wn, being careful not to touch any chips on the board or processor .
Xserve Processor - 6 3. Using the thermal grease included with the replacement processor , apply one dot of fresh grease to the middle of the MPU (or both MPUs if the server is a dual processor). W ARNING: Before reinstalling the heatsink, you must be sure to apply thermal grease to the MPU.
Xserve Processor - 7 Closing the Serv er 1. Carefully slide the bottom housing back into the r ack. 2. Tighten the front thumb screws to secure it. W arning: Never turn on the server unless all of its internal and external parts are in place and it is closed.
