Introduction Y our Linksys HomeLink Phoneline Network Card Congratulations on purchasing your ne w Linksys HomeLink Phoneline Netw ork Card(s). This exciting ne w technology is being of fered in compli- ance with the standards of the Home Phoneline Netw orking Alliance (HomePN A).
Phoneline Network Card & Network in a Box 3 How Does HomeLink Networking Work? The Linksys HomeLink Phoneline Netw ork Card utilizes a technolo gy kno wn as Frequenc y Di vision Multiplexing (FDM).
Sharing Y our Resources The HomeLink Phoneline Netw ork Card brings the adv antages of inexpensi v e netw orking to y our home or of f ice. Any netw orked de vice, including CD- R OM dri ves, hard dri v es, and printers, can be shared b y an y netw orked PC on a HomeLink netw ork.
Installing the HomeLink Card 1. P o wer of f y our PC and disconnect any peri- pheral equipment including the po w er cab le. 2. Remo v e your computer's outside co ver . 3. Locate an open PCI expansion slot on the motherboard , and determine which PCI slot is a Master slot .
If se veral of y our PCs can onl y access one phone jack, you can connect those PCs to gether using the Daisy Chain method. Just plug the cabling from y our f irst PC with its HomeLink Card into the phone jack, then use the second RJ- 11 port on the same Card to connect to your second PC’ s Card.
Installing the Driver Software Preparing to Install the HomeLink Softwar e Setting up the HomeLink Card's softw are in v olves installing a netw or k driv- er onto your computer . The driver will allo w the card to communicate with your Windo ws software package.
4. Select the f irst option, Sear ch f or the best driver f or your device (Recommended) and click Next . 5. Make sure the HomeLink CD is still in the CD-R OM drive, and click CD- RO M d r ive to prompt W indows to search for the dri v ers there. Click Next .
8. An “Insert Disk” window ma y ask for your W indo ws 98 installation f iles. If so, click OK and insert your W indo ws 98 installation CD into your CD- R OM dri ve. Or , enter the location of those f iles on your hard dri ve, (e.g., D:win98, C:W indo wsoptionscabs).
Windows 95 Driver Setup No w that y ou’ ve installed the HomeLink hardware in y our PC, follo w these instructions to install the W indows 95 netw ork driver . The installation proce- dure for your netw ork driv er will vary slightl y depending on your system con- f iguration and what v ersion of W indo ws you are running.
4. In the “Cop ying Files” windo w , enter the dri ve letter of y our CD-R OM dri ve. In most cases, the CD-R OM drive is either D: or E: . Enter the appro- priate dri ve letter and click OK . Netw ork f iles will be copied onto your PC, which ma y take a few minutes.
8. After the setup is complete,choose a user name and passw ord if you ha v e not already done so and enter them in their f ield and click OK to access the netw ork.
Installing the NT 4.0 Network Driver 1. Lo g on as the netw ork administrator . From the W indows NT Desktop, click Start , Settings , Control P anel . Click on the Networ k icon. If you already ha ve NT Netw orking installed , click Adapter , then click Add, and skip to step 3.
7. Click the “Protocols” tab under the “Netw ork” windo w and check for all protocols you need for the HomeLink Card. Click Ad d and OK to add proto- cols. 8. Click the “Services” tab under the “Network” windo w and check that you ha ve all necessary services for the HomeLink Card.
Internet LanBridge Internet LanBridge Over view Acotec’ s Internet LanBridg e Inter net sharing software allo ws you to share your dial-up or ISP connection across y our entire netw ork using only one modem and one ISP account. Do not install LanBridge before making sure that your HomeLink Card has been successfull y installed.
7. When you are ask ed if you w ant to reboot y our PC, click OK . Y our Internet LanBridge ser ver PC installation is no w complete. Installing Internet LanBridge on Client PC(s) 1. Insert the LanBridge Installation CD into your CD-R OM dri ve. When the pop-up menu appears, click on the Internet LanBridg e button.
Uninstalling Internet LanBridge T o uninstall the Inter net LanBridge software, follo w these instructions start- ing with your server PC. These instr uctions apply to y our server PC as w ell as your client PCs. Mak e sure that all of your PCs are disconnected from the Internet before you begin.
33 T roubleshooting T roubleshooting Hints for Windows PCs Problem 1 Windows doesn't detect new hardwar e when I plug in my HomeLink Card, or it detects the card each time I restart my PC.
34 Linksys HomeLink Series Problem 4 In Network Neighborhood, I only see my own PC and no other PCs on the network. Solutions - Make sure y our cable to each PC is connected correctly . - Check your Link/Acti vity LEDs on y our HomeLink Cards (and y our hub, if you are using one) to see if the y are lit.
36 Linksys HomeLink Series Problem 8 A PC with an AMD processor can only see itself in Network Neighborhood, but the workgroup, protocols, cabling and drivers are all working properly .
38 Linksys HomeLink Series Connecting to an Existing Ethernet Network If you w ant to add y our HomeLink PC to an already existing Ethernet net- w ork, y ou must use the HomeLink Card’ s RJ-45 port to connect your PC to that Ethernet network. It is not possib le to connect the HomeLink Card via the RJ-11 port directly to an Ethernet netw ork.
41 About Plug-and-Play PCI T echnology Introduction The HomeLink Netw ork Card is designed to run in 32-bit desktop PCs that are PCI V ersion 2.1 compliant or higher .
Windows 95 V ersion A Driver Setup 1. Start your W indo ws 95 PC, which will detect the HomeLink Phoneline Netw ork Card and displa y a Ne w Hardw are F ound windo w . 2. Make sure the HomeLink CD is in y our CD-R OM dri ve. Select the “ Driver fr om disk pr ovided by har dwar e manufactur er” option on the screen, then click OK.
45 44 File and Printer Sharing Preparing to Use File and Printer Sharing These instructions explain ho w to turn on f ile and printer sharing in W indows 95 and W indo ws 98 so that your netw orked PCs can access each other . Start W indows 95. When ask ed to log in, be sure to gi ve your correct user name and passw ord.
