Chapter 1: Introduction Congratulations on your purchase of a W ireless Access P oint Router with 4- P ort Switch. The W ireless Access P oint Router with 4-P ort Switch pro vides the ideal solution for connecting your wireless netw ork to a high-speed broadband Internet connection and a 10/100 F ast Ethernet backbone.
What’ s an IP Address? IP stands for Internet Protocol. Every device on an IP-based netw ork, includ- ing PCs, print servers, and routers, requires an IP address to identify its “loca- tion, ” or address, on the netw ork. This applies to both the W AN and LAN con- nections.
The LAN Indicators WLAN Act Gr een . This LED indicates wireless acti vity . WLAN Link Gr een . This LED indicates that the Router’ s wireless func- tions ha ve been enabled through the W eb-based utility . Powe r Green . This LED indicates that the Router’ s pow er is on.
Chapter 2: Connecting the Router Before plugging ev er ything together , it’ s alw a ys a good idea to hav e ev er ything you’ ll need to get the Router up and r unning.
F or W ireless Connections: In addition to accessing the Router through an Ethernet connection, a wireless connection can be used to access the Router . After po wering on the Router and connecting it to y our modem, enter the Router’ s IP Address in the Address f ield of your wireless PC’ s web-bro wser as follo ws: http://192.
2. Select the Conf iguration tab and highlight the TCP/IP line for the applicable Ethernet adapter (as shown in Figure 3-1). If the w ord TCP/IP appears by itself, select that line. (Note: If there is no TCP/IP line list- ed , refer to your Ethernet adapter’ s documentation to install TCP/IP now .
5. Click the OK button again. Windo ws may ask y ou for the original W indo ws installation disk or additional f iles. Supply them b y pointing to the cor rect f ile location, e.g., D:win98, D:win9x, c:windo wsoptionscabs, etc. (This assumes that “D” is the letter of your CD-R OM driv e).
The follo wing instr uctions assume you are running W indo ws XP’ s default interface. If you are using the Classic interface (where the icons and menus look like pre vious W indo ws versions), please follo w the instr uctions for W indo ws 2000. 1.
3. If required by y our ISP , enter the Router’ s Host Name and Domain Name in the appropriate f ields on the Setup tab . (This is usually required b y cable ISPs.
PPP oE If your DSL pro vider sa ys that you are con- necting through PPP oE or if you normally enter a user name and pass- w ord to access the Internet, perfor m these steps (sho wn in Figure 4-5): a. Select PPP oE as the W AN Connection T ype. b . Enter the User Name .
Chapter 5: Using the Router’ s W eb- Based Utility F or your con venience, an administrativ e utility has been programmed into the Router . This chapter will explain all of the functions in this utility . All router- based administrativ e tasks are perfor med through this w eb utility .
• SSID : The SSID is a unique name for your wireless netw ork. It is case sensi- tiv e and must not exceed 32 characters. The default SSID is "linksys " but you should change this to a personal wireless netw ork name. All wireless points in your netw ork must use the same SSID .
25 PPP oE Some DSL-based ISPs use PPP oE (P oint-to-P oint Protocol o ver Ethernet) to estab- lish communica- tions with an end- user . If you are using a DSL line, check with your ISP to see if they use PPP oE. If they do use PPP oE, select this from the drop- do wn menu (as sho wn in Figure 5- 5).
28 • Router P asswor d F or g reater security , you should set a pass word for the Router . If you don’ t set the passw ord , all users on your netw ork will be able to access the Router using the default passw ord admin . W e recommend that you change y our passw ord often.
29 A DHCP (Dynamic Host Conf iguration Protocol) Server automatically assigns IP addresses to each computer on its netw ork. Unless you already ha ve one, you should set the Router up as a DHCP server . This is done on the DHCP tab, sho wn in Figure 5-9.
F or a permanent record of these logs, Lo gview er software must be used. This software is do wnloadable from the Linksys w ebsite at www .linksys.com . The Logvie w er sav es all incoming and outgoing activity as a permanent f ile on your PC’ s hard dri ve.
The Security tab, as sho wn in Figure 5-12, enab les conf iguration of the Router to pro vide parental controls. A OL P ar ental Contr ols Click on the radio button next to Enab le to use A OL ’ s “P arental Controls” feature.
2. Click the Br o wse b utton and f ind the f irmware upgrade f ile that you do wnloaded from the Linksys website. Doub le-click the upgrade f ile . This will place the f ile into the “File P ath:” f ield. 3. When the correct f ile is in the “File Path:” f ield , click the Upgrade but- ton and follo w the instr uctions there.
T o f ilter users by netw ork por t number , enter a network port number or a range of netw ork por ts. Enter the por t numbers you w ant to f ilter in the por t numbers f ields. Users connected to the Router will no longer be able to access any port number listed there.
• Using Multicast P ass Through This feature allo ws for multiple transmissions to specif ic recipients at the same time. Select Enab le to suppor t the feature, or Disable to keep the Router from multicasting. • Using IPSec P ass Through This feature lets you use IPSec P ass Through.
3. On the same line, select the protocol TCP or UDP , or select both protocols. 4. Enter the IP address of the server that y ou want the Internet users to be able to access. T o f ind the IP address, go to Appendix D: Finding the MA C Address and IP Address for Y our Ethernet Adapter .
• POP3 (P ost Off ice Protocol 3) A standard mail ser ver commonl y used on the Internet. It provides a message store that holds incoming e-mail until users log on and do wnload it. POP3 is a simple system with little selectivity . All pending messages and attachments are do wnloaded at the same time.
From the Dynamic Routing tab, sho wn in Figure 5-19, y ou can automatically adjust to ph ysical changes in the net- w ork’ s la yout. The Router , using the RIP protocol, determines the net- w ork packets’ route based on the few est number of hops betw een the source and the des- tination.
2. Enter the follo wing data to create a new static route: Destination LAN IP . The Destination LAN IP is the address of the remote netw ork or host to which y ou want to assign a static route. Enter the IP address of the host for which y ou wish to create a static route here.
From the MA C Address Cloning tab, sho wn in Figure 5-22, you can assign the Router a MA C address, which is a 12- digit code assigned to a unique piece of hardware for identif i- cation, like a social security number .
• F ragmentation Threshold. This value indicates ho w much of the Router’ s resources are dev oted to reco vering packet errors. The value should remain at its default setting of 2,346.
Appendix A: Troubleshooting This appendix consists of tw o par ts: “Common Problems and Solutions” and “Frequentl y Asked Questions. ” Pro vided are possible solutions to problems regarding the installation and operation of the Router .
F or Windo ws XP: The follo wing instr uctions assume you are running W indows XP with the default interface. If you are using the Classic interface (where the icons and menus look like pre vious W indo ws versions), please follo w the instr uctions for W indows 2000.
C. In the command prompt, type ping 192.168.1.1 and press the Enter key . • If you get a repl y , the computer is communicating with the Router . • If you do NO T get a reply , please check the cable, and make sure Obtain an IP addr ess automatically is selected in the TCP/IP settings for your Ethernet adapter .
F . T ur n of f the computer , Router, and cab le/DSL modem. W ait 30 seconds, and then turn on the Router, cab le/DSL modem, and computer . Check the Status tab of the Router’ s w eb-based utility to see if you get an IP address. 4. I am not able to access the Router’ s web interface Setup page .
7. I need to set up online game hosting or use other Internet applications. If you w ant to pla y online games or use Internet applications, most will work without doing any port forw arding or DMZ hosting. There ma y be cases when you w ant to host an online game or Inter net application.
13. The fir mware upgrade failed, and/or the Diag LED is flashing. The upgrade could hav e f ailed for a number of reasons. F ollo w these steps to upgrade the f ir mware and/or make the Diag LED stop flashing: A. If the f ir mw are upgrade f ailed , use the TFTP program (it was do wnloaded along with the f irmware).
17. The Diag LED stays lit continuously . • The Diag LED lights up when the de vice is f irst po w ered up. Meantime, the system will boot up itself and check for proper operation. After f in- ishing the checking procedure, the LED turns off to sho w that the system is w orking f ine.
I’m an AOL member and I need more information. Additional infor mation can be found at A OL Keyw ord: Linksys Setup. What is the maximum number of IP addresses that the Router will support? The Router will support up to 253 IP addresses.
If all else fails in the installation, what can I do? Reset the Router by holding do wn the reset button until the Diag LED fully turns on and off. Reset y our cable or DSL modem b y po wering the unit of f and then on. Obtain and flash the latest f irmware release that is readil y av ailable on the Linksys w ebsite, www .
What IEEE 802.11 features are supported? The product suppor ts the follo wing IEEE 802.11 functions: • CSMA/CA plus Acknowledge protocol • Multi-Channel Roaming • Automatic Rate Selection • R TS/CTS feature • Fragmentation • P o w er Management What is BSS ID? A specif ic Ad-hoc LAN is called a Basic Ser vice Set (BSS).
3. At the DOS command prompt , type “ping mail” (assuming that the loca- tion for which y ou’ re tr ying to f ind an IP address is conf igured as “mail”). Press Enter . Infor mation such as the follo wing data, taken from a ping of Microsoft Netw ork’ s e-mail ser ver , will be display ed.
Appendix C: Configuring Wireless Security An acronym for Wired Equi valent Pri vacy , WEP is an encryption method used to protect your wireless data communications. WEP uses a combination of 64- bit or 128-bit keys to pro vide access control to your netw ork and encryption security for ev er y data transmission.
• WEP (64Bit or 128B) Select the lev el of encr yption from the drop-do wn box. 128-bit WEP encr yption is unique to Linksys and ma y conflict with other vendors’ WEP encr yption. The WEP Encr yption key is generated in one of tw o wa ys: 1. Y ou may create an encryption key b y using a P assphrase.
2. In the “Control Panel” windo w , click the Networ k and Internet Connections icon, sho wn in Figure C-4. 3. Click the Netw ork Connections icon, sho wn in Figure C-5. 4. The “Netw ork Connections” windo w will appear , as shown in F igure C-6.
6. When the “W ireless Netw ork Connection Properties” window appears, as in Figure C- 8, click the Wir eless Netw orks Ta b. 7. If the appropriate wire- less netw ork, specif ied by the Router’ s SSID , is displa yed in the “Prefer red netw orks” section, as sho wn in Figure C-9, doub le- click it and continue to the next step.
Appendix D: Finding the MAC Address and IP Address for Y our Ethernet Adapter This section describes ho w to f ind the MA C address for your Ethernet adapter to do either MA C Filtering or MA C Address Cloning for the Router and ISP . Y ou can also f ind the IP address of your computer’ s Ethernet adapter .
2. In the command prompt, enter ipconf ig /all . Then press the Enter key . 3. Write do wn the Physical Address as sho wn on your computer screen; it is the MA C address for your Ethernet adapter . This will appear as a series of letters and numbers. The MA C address/Physical Address is what you will use for MA C Address Cloning or MA C Filtering.
When entering the information using the Router’ s web-based utility , you will type the 12-digit MA C address in this format, XXXXXXXXXXXX without the hyphens for MA C Filtering. See Figure D-6. When entering information for MAC Address Cloning, type the 12-digit MA C addr ess (see Figure D-7).
3. From the Setup screen that appears, sho wn in Figure E-3, select Obtain an IP automatically from the W AN Connection T ype drop-do wn menu. Then, click the Security tab . 4. Select Enable for A OL Parental Controls from the Security tab, sho wn in Figure E-4, and click the A pply button.

IP Addr ess - In the most widely installed le vel of the Internet Protocol (Internet Protocol) today , an IP address is a 32-binary digit number that identi- f ies each sender or receiv er of infor mation that is sent in packet across the Internet.
Plug-and-Pla y - The ability of a computer system to conf igure expansion boards and other devices automaticall y without requiring the user to turn off the system during installation. Po r t - A pathwa y into and out of the computer or a netw ork device such as a switch or router .
If a receiv er is not tuned to the right frequency , a spread-spectr um signal looks like background noise. There are tw o main alternatives, Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) and Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum (FHSS).
