4 W elcome to Nike + iP od Y our P ersonal W orkout Assistant Nike + iPod is a w orkout par tner and coach all in one. Select the t ype of workout you want— open-ended, distance , time , or calorie-bur ning— choose music to keep you motivat ed, and then keep track of your progress ev er y step of the way with spoken and onscreen feedback.
5 Quick Star t F ollow these instructions to get star ted using Nike + iPod right a way . Step 1: Enable Nike + iP od on your devic e. iPod nano: Attach the Nike + iP od receiver to iP od nano. Nike + iPod appears in the main menu. iPhone 3G S and iP od touch: Choose Settings > Nike + iPod and set it t o On.
3 If iT unes indicates your iP od needs an update, click Update and follo w the onscreen instruc tions. Step 3: Insert the Nike + iP od Sensor in your Nike+ ready shoe. Lift the insole of the left shoe, remove the foam insert from the pock et underneath, and replace it with the sensor .
Step 4: Choose a type of workout. An open-ended workout iPod nano: Choose Nike + iPod > New W ork out > Basic. iPhone 3G S and iPod t ouch: Choose Nike + iPod > Basic. A workout with a time goal iPod nano: Choose Nike + iPod > New W ork out > Time.
Step 5: Choose music to accompan y your workout. T o play Do this A Nike+ Workout mix Choose the mix (see page 22). The currently pla ying song Choose Now Playing . Songs from a playlist Choose Playlists and then choose a playlist. Songs in random order Choose Shue Songs.
iP od nano iPhone 3G S and iP od touch Nike + iPod a utomatically gives you spoken feedback on your progr ess during your workout (see “Getting Spoken Feedback” on page 1 5). Y ou can also get feedback whenever you want it. T o get spoken feedback manually: iPod nano: Pre ss the Center button at an y time during your workout.
Step 8: End your w orkout. Y ou can end your workout at any time. If you continue working out after you reach your time , distance, or calor ie goal, your progress con tinues to be monitored . T o end your workout: iPod nano: Pre ss the Play/P ause ( ) button to pause your w or kout.
2 Click Send in the dialog that asks if you wan t to send your workout data to nikeplus.com. Y ou can do it later if you don ’t want t o do it now. 3 Click Visit in the dialog that asks if you want to go to nikeplus.com. The nikeplus.com website opens with your most recen t workout graphed on the homepage.
T o calibrate Nike + iP od for running and walking: 1 iP od nano: Choose Nike + iP od > Settings > Sensor > Calibrate . iPhone 3G S and iP od touch: Choose Nike + iP od > Calibration. 2 Choose Run or Walk and en ter a distance. Note: Y ou must enter at least a quarter of a mile for calibration to be succ essful.
Y ou can also calibrate Nike + iPod using the workout you just nished . This is useful if y ou’ve traveled a known distance that doesn ’t mat ch the summary distance displayed on your device . T o calibrate using your latest c ompleted workout: iPod nano: Choose End Workout, and then choose Calibrate .
Setting the Units of Distance Y ou can set Nik e + iP od to measure your workouts in either miles or kilometers. T o set the units of distance: iPod nano: Choose Nike + iPod > Settings , and set Distances to Miles or Kilometers.
Getting Spoken Feedback As you work out, Nik e + iP od periodically gives spoken feedback on your status . Y ou can choose a female or male voice , or turn o feedback. T o set the voice type or turn spoken feedback o : iPod nano: Choose Nike + iPod > Settings , and then set Spoken Feedback t o M ale, Female, or O .
On iPhone 3G S and iP od touch, all s poken feedback languages are supported automatically . Using a P owerSong Choose a song that motivat es you and make it your P owerSong.
iPhone 3G S and iP od touch: T ap P ause. Or , if the device is locked, press the Home button onc e and then tap P ause. T ap Play to re sume your workout. Receiving Calls During a W orkout Y ou can use i Phone 3G S to answer calls as usual during your workout.
Changing Music During a W orkout Y ou can change your music during a workout without losing your workout data. Y our workout is paused during the music transition. T o change music during a workout: 1 iP od nano: P ress the Menu button and choose Change Music.
2 Open iT unes on your computer , click Nik e + iP od, and then select “ Automatically send workout dat e to nikeplus.com.” 3 Click “ V isit nikeplus.com ” below the checkbox or click V isit in the dialog that appears if you ’ve already set your workout to be sen t automatically .
T o erase a single workout session: 1 Choose Nike + iPod > Hist or y and choose a workout session. 2 iP od nano: Choose a workout session, click the Center butt on, and then choose Delete . iPhone 3G S and iP od touch: T ap Edit, choose a workout session, and then tap Delete.
Note: Y ou can create custom workout shortcuts only on iPhone 3G S and iP od touch (2nd generation). T o delete a custom workout shortcut on iPhone 3G S and iP od touch: Choose Nike + iPod , and then tap My W orkouts. T ap Edit, choose a shortcut, and then tap Delete.
Purchasing Nike+ Work outs Y ou can purchase and download Nike+ W orkouts featuring continuous music mixed with professional c oaching. W hen you purchase a Nike+ Workout, you get a single workout track with music and voiceov er , and y ou also get all the individual songs in the mix.
Using a Nike+ C ompatible Remote Y ou can use a Nik e+ compatible remote (sold separately) to con trol Nike + iPod wirelessly while you work out. Before using a remot e for the rst time, you must link it to y our iPod nano receiv er , iPhone 3G S, or iPod touch.
Linking to Another Sensor Y ou can use your iPod nano , iPhone 3G S, or iP od touch with more than one Nike + iPod Sensor . Each time you use an iPhone 3G S or iP od with a di erent sensor , y ou must link to that sensor .
Note: I f you link to a pr eviously link ed sensor , Nike + iPod det ec ts your calibration settings. Y ou don ’t need to recalibrate . Putting the Nike + iP od Sensor to Sleep The sensor is awake and on by default. If you want to store the sensor f or a long perio d of time or stop it from transmitting , y ou can put it to sleep.

27 A void hearing damage P ermanent hearing loss may occur if earphones are used at high v olume. Set the volume to a safe lev el. Y ou can adapt over time to a higher volume of sound that ma y sound normal but can be damaging to your hearing. I f you experience ringing in your ears or mued speech, stop listening and hav e your hearing checked.
