4 U NP ACKING THE T READMILL 1. Carefully cut and remove the SHIPPING BANDS. 2. Carefully disengage the staples securing the TOP TRA Y . 3. Lift the TOP TRA Y upward and of f of the BOTTOM TRA Y . 4. Remove the T OP SP ACERS, DISPLA Y CONSOLE BOX and UPRIGHTS.
5 A SSEMBLING THE T READMILL T ools Required: Metric Wrench Set, Metric Allen Wrench Set, Phillips Screwdriver 1. Locate the USER LEFT UPRIGHT (A) (upright with pre-fed CONSOLE CABLE). With the HANDLEBAR EXTENSION facing the rear of the unit, position the USER LEFT UPRIGHT near the USER LEFT UPRIGHT BRACKET (B).
This Operation Manual describes the functions of the following products: Life Fitness S port treadmill: ST55 See Section 6, titled Specifications page in this manual for product-specific features. S tatement of Purpose: The treadmill is an exercise machine that enables users to walk or run, in place, on a moving surface.
7 1 G ETTING S T ARTED 1.1 I MPORT ANT S AFETY I NSTRUCTIONS SAFETY W ARNING: The safety of the product can be maintained only if it is examined regularly for damage and wear .
1.2 S ETUP Read the entire Operation Manual before setting up the the treadmill. F OLDING , M OVING , AND P OSITIONING THE T READMILL The treadmill can be folded easily by means of a “gas shock” mechanism. Folding the treadmill when it is not in use frees up floor space and makes it easy to move the unit.
9 G ETTING O N AND O FF THE T READMILL With the treadmill belt idle, step on the side rails to straddle the belt. Set up a workout using the steps described in Section 4.2, titled Using the Workouts . When the belt is in motion, hold the handrails and carefully step onto the belt.
2 T HE D ISPLA Y C ONSOLE 2.1 D ISPLA Y C ONSOLE O VERVIEW The computerized display console on the treadmill allows the user to tailor a workout to personal fitness abilities and goals and to monitor progress. With this easy-to-use console the user can track fitness improvement from one work- out to the next.
11 2.2 D ISPLA Y C ONSOLE D ESCRIPTIONS The functions for the keys and display windows on the treadmill console are listed and described in this section. S ee Section 4, titled The Workouts , for det ailed information on using the console to set up workouts.
2.3 E MERGENCY S TOP S YSTEM The treadmill features an emergency system that cuts the main power of the unit to stop the treadmill if the user falls. The system consists of a key that is inserted into a key-holder located in the lower-lef t side of the console.
13 3 H EART R AT E Z ONE T RAINING E XERCISE 3.1 W HY H EART R AT E Z ONE T RAINING E XERCISE ? Research shows that maintaining a specific heart rate while exercising is the optimal way to monitor the intensity of a workout and to achieve maximum results.
3.2 H EART R AT E M ONITORING T HE T ELEMETR Y H EART R AT E C HEST S TRAP The treadmill is equipped with telemetry , a heart rate monitoring system in which electrodes, pressed against the skin, transfer heart rate signals to the treadmill console.
4 T HE W ORKOUTS 4.1 W ORKOUT O VERVIEWS This section lists the treadmill’ s pre-programmed workouts. For more det ailed information, see Section 4.2, titled Using the Workouts .
E NTERING N UMERIC V ALUES D URING A W ORKOUT S ETUP After a workout is selected, the MESSAGE CENTER displays prompt s to enter certain values, depending on the workout type. At these prompts, simply use the the NUMERIC KEYS to enter the number , and press ENTER.
17 E NDING A W ORKOUT E ARL Y It is possible to end a workout immediately before the pre-set duration expires. T o do so, press the STOP key twice. The MESSAGE CENTER displays the completed time, total dist ance, and total calories burned. Press the ST OP key again to reset the console and set up a new workout.
18 4.3 W ORKOUT D ESCRIPTIONS S PEED I NTERV AL This program alternates intervals of high and low speeds. As the profile diagram indicates, the speed gradually increases in the early stage. The main section of the workout consists of high- and low-speed intervals.
19 H ILL C LIMB This program alternates intervals of high and low elevations. Unlike the F A T BURN workout, the high intervals build to a peak and then gradually decline. H EART R AT E C ONTROL In this program the treadmill will activate according to your warm up speed for the duration that you have requested.
C HANGING E XISTING C USTOM W ORKOUT S ETTINGS Once a CUSTOM WORKOUT has been set up, it can be reset or changed as desired. T o change existing settings for one of the two CUSTOM WORKOUTS : 1. Change the workout duration during setup. Doing so prompts the computer to erase all the settings for the workout.
5 S ERVICE AND T ECHNICAL D ATA 5.1 P REVENT A TIVE M AINTENANCE T IPS Use a vacuum cleaner or a slightly damp cloth to remove dust from the treadmill periodically . W ARNING: Do not use any solvent s on the deck or running belt, as these can reduce lubrication.
22 • Displayed “ERROR 3-SAFETY KEY TETHER ERROR”: This indicates that the Emergency S top Key is not cor- rectly inserted into the keyholder . Make sure that the key is properly inserted. • Displayed “ERROR 5-INCLINE ERROR”: This indicates that the incline motor , which creates workout eleva- tions, is not functioning properly .
